I bought white dinnerware today.Great buy.Thanks for your advice.

Today I bought Mikasa Antique White #HK400 Ultima, service for 8, which includes a vegetable bowl, a round meat platter, a creamer, and sugar bowl w/lid. They are stamped 'freezer, oven, microwave, dishwasher safe'.I also got a huge pasta bowl with 4 pasta servers (which I can also use as veggie bowls, etc.) This is also Antique White, but not stamped as the Ultima. I paid $186.49, inc. tax and I am very pleased. The dinner plates are large, which my husband likes. We have always had Corelle for our everyday dishes. I am using these for 'everyday' use and special occassions since they are so pretty, and substantial. I got them at our local BonTon, after checking ALL stores in the area that offer dinnerware.

Thank you all for your advice and suggestions. I now have another question -

What extra pieces would you add? I was thinking of possibly getting the larger coffee (I think there is a misprint on the size 8.3" ? of these on Amazon) or cappucino mugs 4.5", salt & pepper shakers, cereal bowls, fruit bowls, and coffee server (don't think me strange, but I would use this to serve gravy/sauces. I have never liked gravy boats.) etc.

What would you recommend? My family needs suggestions for my Christmas gifts, and I thought the extra pieces would make it easy for them.

PS: Amazon has some great buys on this pattern, but I wanted to have the dinnerware in time for Thanksgiving.

There is an outlet near here and years back I bought big stacks of plain cream colored plates, bowls and small plates for $1 each. Can't count the times I've served a crowd with 'real' plates. Haven't broken or chipped one.

For your wish list, mugs do sound good. Or how about extra platter and serving bowls - never enough of those! And those thin long bowls, small for olives, etc, large for breadsticks, etc.

Barbra Mark is Triggerm5215. Tigger is Winnie the Pooh's friend : ) I've had a couple plants from Willie (7servent7) that didn't make it but he did replace them and didn't ask me to return the dead plants. The replacement plants that he sent are doing beautifully. The Ebay seller that I'm up in the air about is tctopcat but there's people that will swear by him. The problems I've had have to do with cuttings, not rooted plants. I've received great cuttings and I've also received crap. It seems that the more "exotic" varieties are cut green and don't root as well. If they were a little more mature I think they'd do better or if I was better at rooting green cuttings. lol He does carry a nice variety though and the prices are reasonable. Karyn

Baby Shower Ideas...I need your help.

I just had a baby shower for my daughter. We passed around ribbon and each guest cut one as long as they thought they needed to go around my daughter's tummy. Was fun to actually measure them and we saved the pieces of ribbon that they cut. Each person signed their piece of ribbon too and we saved them for her babybook! I made some premade scrapbooking pages that would include pieces of advice from each person attending. When I sent out the invites, I included the small cards for them to think of something to write to the baby or my daughter...advice for them! Something that my daughter and her daughter can look over whenever they want. A great way to include the guests/friends into her baby scrapbook! I bought some "babies" made out of blankets and sleepers on Ebay and they were adorable. The theme was Sugar and Spice, everything nice.....and it was worked into the menu.....lots of sweet(small cakes, molded mints, etc) and even some spicey appetizers! And almost everything was PINK! Just was fun! And of course...........LOTS of pictures! Just a wonderful memory made.......and expressions of support for my daughter! I hope you had fun.......and that YOU had time to enjoy it all! I know youÂve already decided to paint it, but I will say something in case some future person is looking for info. The "carved" detail did not take stain because it is resin or plastic, not wood. I thought this was likely as soon as I saw the closeups. DonÂt think modern cheap plastic, think Bakelite. I have an oak piece with resin details so learned a bit about it that way. It had been in my grandparentsÂ basement, painted for decades, and my Mom had it stripped for me. She remembered that it was oak underneath. When I first saw it stripped and went to stain it I realized the elaborate parts were not wood. I asked her about it and she explained that this was pretty common, that most pieces at that time were stained dark and then it was easy to mask that those parts were not wood. A certain class of furniture had these (~ first couple decades of 1900Âs) to imitate the wood carving that would price it out of the reach of the middle class. You could post your pic on the antiques forum and more people could tell you about it, IÂm sure. To make a long story short(er), the resin does not take stain because it is not porous. There might be another approach, but what I did was to stain and varnish the whole piece first, then apply a glaze over just the resin details. Allow plenty of time to dry (again, not porous) then top coat with varnish.

Piper, I have read with interest your concern regarding your dishes. I can't imagine why anyone would have been rude or harsh on the cooking forum in answer to that concern. I like my dishes too and want to use them for holidays but I don't want them cracked, scratched, broken or abused. We are talking about adults . How could anyone use a knife and not know it is cutting through to China ( pardon the pun). That said, don't feel bad because you are concerned with your dishes being damaged. Ideefixe made the remark it isn' fine antique hand painted 200 yrs ago. I'm sure she didn't mean that rude or harsh, did you Idee. She was just saying it wasn't all that big of deal. Is that what you meant Idee. Well, I feel everything in my home is to be used and enjoyed but I work around my "good things" getting man handled or mauled. I would use my dinner plates as a charger (as someone else suggested) and find clear dinner plates . You can find clear that look very nice and you will still be able to see the beauty of your V&B. As I said , there is nothing wrong with wanting to keep nice things from being damaged while being able to use them and enjoy them . Good luck and buy the way , V&B make beautiful and quality settings.

Thanks for your suggestions.

I just placed a web order for fruit bowls which I think will come in handy for coleslaw etc. and I also ordered the salt & pepper shakers. On my Christmas wish list requested by my family I chose 8 cereal bowls, 4 cappuccino mugs (my husband is the only every day coffee drinker), and the 10" footed bowl. I am seriously considering the oval platters - 14" or 16". I just bought a 14" embossed platter w/fruit & leaves, and the color is a great match. It is very heavy though. It was only $10. at Bed, Bath & Beyond w/a $5.00 rebate. I couldn't pass it up.
