Have you looked into getting dominoes? That is, modular units? I can't remember if we've discussed this before, you and I. But you could get a two gas burner module, a grill, and a two element induction, and have it all look right together and be more compact. (36"-45" rather than 52" minimum for what you described.)

I have a 15" Wolf gas module (one small and one medium burner), and a 24" Gaggenau induction which I self-imported from Europe, for a total of 41.75" under a 48" hood. (If they're not made to put in series with special hardware underneath, you need a few inches between, or maybe a very determined carpenter.) The induction has one large dual element, and one pair of smaller ones.

I find myself using the gas less and less. I'm still very happy I have the gas. I can't seem to want to try to grill tortillas on the induction. It's not like the gas touches them. It just seems somehow wrong the other way. And the gas is great for roasting a pepper or whatnot, and for when I just need more burners. The only part I don't like is all the black, but the black grate and stainless body of the Wolf goes well with the black glass and stainless rim of the Gaggenau, so it's really okay. And the shiny glass reflects the patterns from the backsplash tiles.

One of the reasons I went with this configuration is that I did want more induction. Originally, I was going to get one large induction element in a domino, and two gas burners, plus a teppan yaki. When the price soared, I reexamined my choices, and also to get more cabinet and counter space, I decided I wanted more than just the single big induction element. I could have also gotten the single domino and a two element domino to go with the gas. My way saved quite a lot of money, besides the space.

efs, what you are describing is exactly the set up we have. I would have been tempted to go with all induction, but, never having had gas before, wanted to do both. My DH *loves* the gas, we both love the grill and I love the induction, which I tend to use for slow cooking or cooking where I need to regulate the heat to a fine point.

Although I would consider going all induction in another life, I find this set up to be really functional and versatile.

I have 2 Wolf modular units--a single gas burner and an induction with 2 elements, both 15". I can't attend more than 3 cooking elements at one time (2 elements actually but need an extra one for stew/soup), so that's what I got. I chose this configuration because I do mostly wok cooking. I need a gas burner since my wok is round-bottomed. It's also big (16" in dia.) and modular units allow me to spread out the cooking elements.

Talking about modular units, 3 brands come to my mind: Wolf, Miele and Gaggenau. Wolf doesn't have 12" units, only 15". Gag used to have 12" but I only see 15" now. Miele have both sizes but doesn't seem to have 15" grill.

Although I'm happy with my Wolf in general, one thing I don't like is the tough control on the induction unit. I prefer knob. Both Miele and Gag use knobs but the positions are different. If I could do again, I would keep the same configuration but go with Gag.

I went for another appliance tour today and realized that Wolf all induction is too small for my cooking habits and vessels. On the other hand, Miele looks really nice.

plllog- I think I am not ready to give up the indoor grill yet and the domino grill units are not infrared like the ones on the gas rangetops.

Eliz, if you were to go all induction- would you not have missed your grill? Your induction unit is not under the hood- does this create a problem? I actually would like a configuration exactly like yours- I will also have windows on both sides of the cooktop (new addition so they can be wherever I need them) and would not mind having a bit smaller hood than the 54 inches needed for the originally planned 48 inch all gas rangetop with grill.

Dapitou: I cannot locate two burner Miele; on their Web site they only list 30 inch and 36 inch. Gaggenau looks nice, but I have hard time finding the specific about the hob sizes.

Oh! I thought I remembered seeing an IR grill module. Guess not.

The Miele modules are called "Combisets". The induction is the second one listed under electric. It's a single element, 15" unit, that is rated for several different sizes. They have a two element one in Europe (and I think they used to sell it here).

Yes, initially I was worried about that hood configuration - but it seems that I never cook anything that needs a strong vent on the induction. Almost two years in - hasn't been a problem.

Interesting about the grill. At first we didn't really use it for much other than grilling bread for bruschetta, etc. But once we started using it more regularly, it's one of our favourite features. I've used it for grilling peppers and other veggies, chicken and seafood skewers, chicken thighs, etc etc. Love it! esp in the winter when it's too cold to grill outside.
