Is it open or will you try to enclose? Is it in the laundry room or somewhere that is already closed from public display? Just wondering...It looks like a great spot for pantry from what I can tell.

Short wall...You could L the shelves and have some that are a little deeper. Or us it for hanging space for broom, shopping list white board, etc., etc.

Yep rhome... it's also my laundry room, It's a little over 10ft. wide. Across from the 8ft. wall is my washer/dryer/water heater and even a little window.

I think it will be fantastic.

Here are some suggestions.

Put a light inside.

If you plan to have the shelves screwed in, as opposed to being adjustable, then I think you might want to consider what you will be storing and the varying heights you will need.

For example, tall cereal boxes. case of pop, case of beer, height of paper towels, roasting pan, crock pot, liquor bottles, holiday serving pieces, cans of soup, bottles of things like salad dressing, juices. Pet food containers. Cleaning supplies like a bucket. Maybe even whole plastic storage tubs with lids.

Since your laundry is in the same room, you might want ironing board storage or maybe even some hanging space for drip drying.

OH... he's building the wall to enclose it rhome. The wall will come out from just beyond the glass door that is across from my ovens. Since it's a narrow space, he's going to build a door frame for a bi-fold door. We're going to order one that has some frosted glass in it.

All good points julie. It already has a light and I do need hanging storage. I like the open aisle because I want him to make me some kind of fold out table for folding/ironing(which I don't do really). I might even make that the doggie eating area since I'm always kicking into their water bowls. Yep... I guess measure and figure out what I want to store on which shelves and go from there. That high deep shelf will remain for Holiday items and weird stuff we only use once a year. It'll have to be DH acess cause I'll never be able to reach to the back of it.

Brainstorming

If you did a roll-out table for part of the length, you'd get a folding table, a place to park laundry baskets and a cooling area when you need it. I guess I'm thinking 24" deep when closed?

Take a 21-25" solid shelf across the area (think ikea b block) at a comfortable counter height for you and you get a grocery unpacking area, small appliance parking plus laundry basket area.

Dh could hang those wood pullouts from the ikea pax complement closet system underneath and do adjustable 12" or 16" deep shelves above it. The pax pullouts could be one or two racks. They come either 30" in width or about 20". You could set them at your desired heights. You might be able to get one of those laundry carts on wheels that would fit underneath the counter instead of a folding table.

Agree with listing what you want to store. Food stuffs are kinda one set of dimensions, gear can be another and laundry items a third. Unless you sew, consider a mini-ironing board - also called an on table board or one of those rack things that holds the board legs and the iron in about 5 inches.

Remember the brooms or mops or buckets or vacuum.

Not simple at all... it sounds like a palace! Do whatever you want in there- including the previous excellent suggestions !

That's a huge pantry! Such great potential, lucky you! I'd be careful to organize it well or it could end up like my old cavern of mess. It was 6' wide and about 3 1/2' deep. The shelves went around in a U. It was supposed to be mainly used for groceries, bags of dog food, and large kitchen pots and small appliances that didn't fit in the kitchen. It ended up being a mess. I'm sure it was because I didn't keep it in order. But I also think it wasn't officially organized well. If you're going to share that pantry for food, laundry, dogs, kitchen items, etc. that will be a lot of uses. Can you create separate areas for each use somehow? You have to have two sets of bi-fold doors I assume. Would it make sense to also create two separate closets/pantries? Maybe one 4' pantry for food and then a 4' closet with "L" for organizing everything else?

I got rid of my big pantry and now have three separate areas for food. One small pantry that's 24" wide works great for all my store bought canned goods and miscellaneous other groceries. I have an antique "hi boy" that I use for all my baking supplies. And I have a 36" wide cupboard for food that I've "put up" from the garden. Bags of snacks go in a drawer. I'm much happier this way.

I guess what I'm saying is you need to really think about what exactly you want to keep in that pantry. If you put an 8' long shelf that's 12" deep plus an "L" area of shelving on the shorter wall . . . that's a lot of shelf space! Can you handle having everything in there side by side? Or should you break it up somehow? A lot to think about. It really would help to have a clear vision of what will be in there, as I've said. It's cool that your DH was able to use up what he had : ) I like the idea of covering the wall with thin sheet rock so it can all be painted.
When I was designing it helped to see photos so I hope these photos help for size perspective.

I love this one too!! See this is what I'm talking about . . . these pantries are huge but have vertical boards separating the long shelves into areas that can then be better organized.

We love the idea of the rolling laundry cart! Now I typically fold right out of the dryer, put it into "people piles" and put the clothes right away. The one thing I definitely need is a hanging pole which I can reach.

I like the last picture best. It's closest to what I had in mind. I actually was thinking of just straight shelving but DH likes this because it eliminates the need for him to create all sorts of bracing for the weight of a bunch 8' long shelves. I'll have to check out the IKEA Pax system components. I don't really know anything about them.

I was thinking of having DH make a fold out table. I have 30" to the lower electrical panel so I'm thinking about 28"L x 24" W.

The next to the water heater I have wall space he can put a fold out pole/hanger that can fold down flat

Lastly, and sorry for the length; what do you think of something like this from IKEA for the short wall instead of L shelves. From the STOLMEN collection you assemble poles and can add shelves, drawer units and a door unit. pretty cool

Your post about a laundry cart reminded me of this. Maybe something like this would work for you too.......

When we remodeled 10 years ago, our girls were early grade school, and not big enough to lift the big KA mixer by themselves. They love to bake.

We designed our pantry to hold this rolling cart from Target. I kept the mixer on top, and flour, sugar etc in rubbermaid containers in the middle, and cookie cutters etc on the bottom. They could just roll it out of the kitchen pantry over to the island and plug it in by themselves. (And use the mixer right on the cart).

Now they are in college and I keep the mixer in a cabinet. But when I get too old to want to lift it around, I know I can go back to the cart setup.

You might find this useful to hold laundry baskets and such ,and have it fit right in the closet.

I like the idea of a rolling cart to bring my food processor in and mixer in. I was going to keep the mixer on the bakers table but do prefer clear counters. Lifting the food processor kills me too. Just roll them in and then I only have to lift it a few inches. Hmmmmm......

This kind of thing for hanging? I've seen all kinda gismos for this as well as retractable clothes lines.
