99.9% finished kitchen--thank you for everything!

I can't believe I first found this forum over a year ago, and now I am finally able to post photos of my new kitchen. Without all of you, I never would have known about soapstone, plugmold, baffles, Miele DWs, and drawers drawers drawers (to name but a few things I learned here)!

Unfortunately my computer died a few weeks ago and I lost some photos, but for those interested on seeing the before (or simply more pictures of the process), I'll link to my blog at the end.

Thanks everyone for your kind words. The granite is called Lapidus. We purchased it, the subway and the 1" square glass back splash from Ideal Tile in NJ. The floor tile is Magica Royal Rossa from Avalon tile in NJ. Chairs are Charleston Forge. I swore never to buy wrought iron chairs, but these are remarkably comfortable. The Spanish fruit basket tiles on the back splash and the table were both found on ebay. We were told the table is mango wood reclaimed from an old floor. If you're willing to take the risk, ebay may be a source for good deals. The hardware, faucets, air switch are all from ebay. All the lighting -even under counter halogens- were also ebay items from Sea Gull Lighting. Believe it not the Medallion St. Andrews Oyster Vintage cabinets; also from ebay! A Medallion dealer had a number of new-in-boxes cabinets that we bought as a complete lot. We sold the extras and had to buy several cabinets from a local dealer.

oh Marybeth - the pics of the corner cab are great! they are big and I can see everything very nicely. and it gives a great view of the cabinet wood - lol! again, it's just so beautiful! that light rail would then take the bottom of 'cab' to counter to 16.5 I think - so having the cab bottom (w/o light rail) that low would work also. I will have the chance to live in my 'to be' old kitchen for some time to get a better idea of it IRL. I'm planning ahead from all the ideas and photos I see here for possible uses and alternatives for challenges I anticipate running into. I'll have notes and photos to refer to at that time instead of saying 'I think I saw somewhere... I read somewhere but don't remember where... .

Sorry I haven't posted responses, we've been away. Back to reality now! @megfitz: We hired out the cabinet painting. I know they were lightly sanded, then primed, then 2 coats of the BM Satin Impervo Waterborne. I haven't had any problems with chipping, and have been able to wipe away drips/splatters easily. @maidenlou: I don't have any up-close pictures of the wood grain showing through the paint, but it's just the wood grain texture, no knots or dark color show through at all. Since I was going for more of a "rustic farmhouse" look, I figured the small dents/marks in the cabinets just added more authenticity. ;) Personally, I think that new (smooth) painted cabinets are pretty, but... you can't really tell they're real wood, they are so smooth. I just wanted my cabinets to look like the wood they are, but painted. Where we added the new cabinets/doors (under the sink doors/new cabs for trash pull out and hutch), yes we did order oak to match. We then had them sanded/primed/painted like the rest. Even the furniture base and "feet" are oak, so the grain is all the same. @noellabelle: If you copy and paste the link to the whole "album" in my original post, you will see the area of the kitchen I didn't include pics of above. They microwave is in a separate little alcove which is directly across from the end of the peninsula. I use the micro mainly for heating leftovers and steaming fresh veggies, so just take those things straight to the nearby table. I also have it more out of the main traffic area so the kids can use it without being "in the way", so to speak. I did consider putting the micro over the range, but at only 5'2", decided I wouldn't like having to remove hot dishes that were above my eye level. The range hood is a Broan I saw @ Lowe's and ended up ordering online through Amazon. Crown molding is scheduled to be installed throughout the main floor next week, then we can finish up the painting and call this big project DONE! Thank you everyone. My house is very plain, old, and tired. I'm trying to make it "homey" and "nice." Once we get the "sun porch" finished into a "four seasons porch" it will be our main living room. (In maybe two years?) Since it has 10 windows, a pretty view, and will have a small wood-burning stove, I see us spending most of our time there. This green room will become a waiting-for-dinner-to-appear and visiting-with-the-girls room. Steph2000, Thank you; I love the floor. It's had a tough life and is original to the 1952 house. The same wood is in the hallway and two back bedrooms, now our "office/den" and "sewing room." The TV on the far wall does make the most since, but while the room is empty I've put a couple chairs on that wall and it really opens up the room. It's so long and skinny. Because of the doorways and all, there's not really room to make a full-size sofa work. I'm seriously thinking of having DH's recliner (non-negotiable), my glider rocker, and two matching swivel recliners or high leg swivel chairs in the room. I thought of a bank of low bookcase cabinetry along the back wall, the two matching chairs pulled forward in front of it, with an end table between them. I'll have to draw it out later on. BLFenton - the closet and front doors have a darker, reddish undertone. I had thought perhaps the TV cabinets could echo that to pull the darker to the other end of the room, too. Lukiirish - I would love to see your cabinets. AWM and NoSoccerMom - I love both of those styles, but I think I want wood...and I must have solid doors. The room is so small I'm trying to reduce visual clutter. Here's an idea I snagged from Pinterest, but I was thinking of making it from Hickory cabinets. Any thoughts on this. (And what if the inside was painted with a dark, royal purple that echos the mat of a photo near the breakfast table???) I want more room left of the TV so it doesn't seem squished like this one. My room would resemble this in that I have a large window to the right of where the cabinet would be, but not so close, and an open doorway to the left. I think you'll have to click on the picture to see the "after" shot.

I love all the separate pieces...The oven cabinet, the pantry, the appliance garage hutch, and your island pieces. Your soapstone looks amazing...and the copper...How unique and cool!

Sorry I left out the important stuff! Here it is:

Appliances: Bosch 500 double ovens and induction cooktop; Miele Inspira DW; Thermador Freedom 36" french door fridge; KitchenAid fridge/freezer drawers (in the hutch); Best hood insert.

Lighting: pendants are Meyda Tiffany fishscale; island fixture is the Akordian Two-light (I think this is Architects and Heroes, but I got it on clearance at VanDykes Restorers)

Faucets: Waterstone Towson Gantry and Towson cold water faucet in American Bronze

Floor: can't remember who made it right now, but the color is Ocean and it is a porcelain tile made from recycled materials

Walls: BM Powell Buff

Backsplash and hutch door inserts: custom fired and sealed copper from Marbleized Copper

Countertops, 2" beaded trim, and 33" block sink: Bucks County Soapstone (I believe the counters are Santa Rita Venata, but don't hold me to it)

Cabinets: custom by Kevin Ritter of Timeless Kitchen Design. Face frames and doors/drawer fronts are all of reclaimed lumber; finish is milk paint.

Here is one more picture of my message/phone center, tucked into a corner. I got the cork board off Etsy and the sewing machine was my great-grandmothers (still works, too--if only I knew how to use it!):

What a happy, colorful, eclectic kitchen! I love it and it all works so well together! I'm in lust over your copper--it's such a perfect complement with the colored cabs. And your main light fixture and faucet look so steam punk--I love them!

And I'd like to say thanks so much for taking the time to show how you organized everything in your wonderful new space on your blog. It's so helpful to those of us still in the planning/wishing stage. Don't forget to put your kitchen in the FKB so we can study it again & again! Enjoy the fruits of your labor!

Your kitchen is just beautiful. Lovely colours, charmingly unfitted, just perfect. I love it. Fabulous view too. My favourite bit may be the "islands" - what is (or was) the larger dark table? I love the faucet too.

Thanks for posting, I will spend more time on your blog tonight checking out all the details.

Wow! I'm a sucker for a blue and white kitchen, but yours in especially gorgeous! Love love love the "furniture cabinetry" especially the double oven surround. The brick is a surprising detail... and that faucet- yummy!! Great work.

Thanks everyone. This was the first time I ever took on a project on this scale, and it was certainly an adventure, but made much easier by having this forum to rely on, even as a lurker before I had the courage to post! ;-)

To answer some questions/comments:

We initally started with just off-white; then added the green, and then our cabinet maker suggested adding a third color as well. So it evolved over time.

The light fixture and faucets were two instances I went over budget, but when I saw them I couldn't forget them, and then when DH saw them and loved them, our fate was sealed...

The darker part of the island used to be a work table; one end still has a working vise, though we just drape dish towels over it:

The brick chimney was previously covered by a wall, and we chose to reveal it as a decorative element.

The house is from 1873, more farmhouse style than ornate Victorian though we do have some cool detailed carved hinges and doorknobs left in the house. The current kitchen is not where the original kitchen was (things were shifted around in the 1960s). We are only the 5th owners in 137 years, and everyone seems to have taken great care of the place!

Thank you everyone for the compliments. Renovating this kitchen was probably one of the hardest and yet most fun and exciting things I've ever done, and we are so happy with the results.

Is it terrible I'm already thinking about what we could do with the bathrooms?

I think I might even enjoy the clean-up phase of turkey day with all the soapstone and that drop dead gorgeous faucet. I'd be spending waaaay too much time 'cleaning' the counters and 'spraying' the dishes. Great job!

I saw you post on the other thread, and searched out your kitchen. I must have missed it due to the holiday... and this forum moves so fast, I usually don't go past Page 2.

You did a great job! I like using several colors and love the unfitted look, as you may well know. ;) Love the old work bench. I've never seen a faucet like that before - will search it next to see it clearly. I second whoever said to be sure and put it on the FKB. Enjoy, and thanks for pointing it out so I wouldn't miss.

I also like the unfitted look. I'm also planning white cabs with soapstone counter tops.

I picked up an old treadle machine at an auction a few years back - $5 and no one else wanted it. I use mine as an a small table too.

I missed this one! My Thanksgiving got in the way of GW! LOL.

Color, color, color! Me loooooves color! I love the mixture of cabinet colors, and they look smashing together!

And that faucet is absolutely fascinating! Love your worktable too! I am so loving the vibe you have going!

I love it. Unique, different, not over done. Elegant, simple, honest.

My fave is the backsplash behind the range. I like simple things that are about materials, so the copper is great.

I'm coming to the party late but wanted to say wow! And thank you!!!!!!! I'm doing a historic kitchen (1889 queen Anne) and I'm bound by both an old grant from the 70s and my own need to keep the place feeling very Victorian on the top three floors. I was torn by this challenge because I don't think I can live without a spray on my faucet. Not a whimpy little push button one, but a real high arch sprayer. I love you...you're my santa claus and tooth fairy all in one!!!!!!! I'm buying two of those right now lol.

We had the same difficulty--DH loved his culinary faucet from our old home in TX and we despaired of finding a vintage look replacement. This one is certainly unique, hope it works for you!
