Please Help...attaching granite backsplash

I hope that someone can help me, DH & I bought a Bath Vanity with granite countertop from Costco, it came with a separate 4 inch backsplash. We went to Lowes, and no one seems to know what to use to attach it to the wall. It will have to be caulked, grouted as well. I'm hoping someone surely will know on this forum with all the DIY Kitchens. I would have posted on the bath forum, but this forum gets more traffic.

It is simple enough. Put a couple dobs of silicone about 2" in from either end and in the middle from top to bottom. About a dime size blob will do. Gently press against the wall. If you are not a good artist with silicone, place a fine bead along the back of the vanity and set the splash on it to keep water from seeping behind the splash. If you are good, go with the blobs and silicone a very fine bead along the splash where it meets the vanity. I was taught to use as much silicone as needed, as long as you can't see it. Try some tape to keep the mess from spreading out all over the place. What do you need to grout for? Color match caulk is better. Hope this helps

I agree with everything Mark said. (You could use mirror mastic to "glue" it to the wall, but do color caulk the plane changes.)

Catara -if it's properly glued to the drywall, it won't be removable. Taking it out would take out the drywall too. Ask the fabricator about the drawbacks to each method. Grinding it down risks more damage to the slab, so my thought would be to remove drywall and install granite. (or install granite over drywall and add another layer of drywall to make the wall level.

IMO, the gold ain't working. Also, IMO, a cream or beige shade would be a neutral color that would let your counter top stand out. I would definitely visit the paint stores and pick up some chips (plenty of them) and take them home. FYI, in our similar situation we collected 30-40 paint chips, took them home, laid them out against the granite and counter top samples we had, and were able to immediately eliminate all but 5 or 6 of them and finally settle on a color. Then we took the paint chip we decided on (along with a sample of the granite and cabinet finish) to the granite store that also stocks back splash tiles, and the designer there had us a back splash design laid out in less than an hour...she was GOOD! Hope that helps.

Hopefully, they will get the yellow marks off (there was a slab stacked in front of it). Msjam, I'm linking to an earlier GW thread about your granite choice. I suspect that the yellow marks are iron oxidation (rust) that originates from within the stone. Wanted to give you a heads up on this so you don't get any nasty surprises on down the road. From what I've read, the iron bits in stone can continue to oxidize and you'll be seeing more or it as time goes by. You might want to investigate further... Colonial Cream Granite discussion

Hi Magoo,

Don't mean to hijack the thread, but have a related question - thought might be a good place to ask and have all answers be on the same thread...

While using the granite piece as backsplash, does it make sense to have the backsplash rest on the counter-top OR have the countertop butt against the backsplash, during installation.

I've only ever seen it rest on top of the countertop. In case your granite is not cut dead on with the wall, the backsplash covers those irregularities.

Do I also run a bead of caulk along the seam? What kind of caulk, that shiny silicone type?
