The wouldn't want the trash pullout in that location. I'd want to reach it from the sink (while the dishwasher is open) and the cooking and prep area.

I do think the cabinets next to the fridge would look more hutchlike if they were shorter...But think they're OK either way.

Looks like you'll have a gorgeous kitchen.

1) While ideally it's nice to have equal access to the trash if the dw is open. I would not want to give up the 30" drawers to get it. Where the trash is not isn't that bad. My sister has that arrangement and it's not too difficult to scrape the dishes while loading the DW.

2) I think it looks great the way it is! Besides it gives you more cabinet space, you'll have to reach it with a stool, but more space non the less.

3) Again looks great to me!

I've followed your layouts and I've got to say you've really made some nice choises with the challenges of your space. Try not to worry too much, your kitchen is going to look fabulous!

I would want the trash to the left of the sink. If you swap those cabinets, you're not losing a 30" cabinet, it will just be in a different location. I don't think the trash will get in the way of the cook. Is the range 24" away from that corner? I actually think it would be a great spot for the trash. Easy access while you're cooking/prepping.

I think it all looks great. Which frig/freezer combo did you go with?

i have to agree about the trash. i used to keep it under my sink as well and if you are used to having it there, i think it would bother you to be that far. especially if you have a big drippy mess in your hands that you want to drop quickly in the trash pullout.

i think the hutch actually looks very cool as is. this part is soooooooooo exciting yet nerve racking......

I would move the trash pullout to the left of the sink. It looks like you can then put 30" drawers to the right of the dishwasher which would be great for dish drawers.

I also think the hutch looks great. It might look a little more hutch like if it were a little shorter, but if it's the only stepped down height cab it might look strange if it's not a different color/finish.

Thanks so much for the comments and compliments. Peri-menopause has made me so indecisive I'm driving everyone, including myself, crazy!

The best option may be to keep the double bin pull out where it is and either give up the stepped back sink base or get a bin that attaches to the sink base door. I like the idea of a small bin under the sink that holds food waste (and DH's stinky cheese detritus!) that I can empty every day or two. Here's an example of the sink base (not a very good one I'm afraid). It does add a lovely period look to the kitchen. Do you think a bin would be too hard to access?

Its interesting. The freezer-ovens cabs look too tall and spindly to me, the hutch looks fine.

I think the trash is a good compromise where it is now - the kitchen trash can may get used by lots of family members for other types of trash. I have mine where people are suggesting you move yours and even with just two people, I don't think I would position it in a corner again...

I'd be tempted to soften the corner immediately after the trash can - between the passage way to the dining room and the other door, it reads as a hip bumper. I think the same thing about the hutch cabinet base because of access to the left side of what I guess is pot drawers.

In a separate view. I do not see where the prep and layout area for the ovens are located? Do you bake much and where is that happening.

Have you thought or walked through the 4-6 normal things you do every day in the kitchen and see how things flow? Do you enetertain and how that would work.

I know more food for thought. When we re did everything we had pieces and a map of the area and placed them in different configurations and walked through the various activities. We have had the kitchen for 4 months and no regrets.

I have noticed the void in the far left corner. Is it a necessary space for pipes or a chimney? It is a very large space to be unused. G

B'more, I can see your point. Any suggestions for making them less spindly looking?

Canuck, thank you for the thoughts. I think the layout will work well for the way we cook. We've had to make many compromises but still managed to pack in most of what we wanted. The kitchen is small so it's not really that many steps from one zone to the next. For entertaining, we hope that taking down part of the dining room/kitchen wall will help open the kitchen up to guests without bringing it too far into the eating space.

Overall, I think it looks very nice.

Question: What is more important to you, function or form? [There is no right or wrong answer...just what's right for you!]

Void: I have to agree w/FootballMom...in a small kitchen you're giving up a lot of space to just "void" out a corner...unless it's necessary b/c of plumbing, etc.

Trash: I would either move it left of the sink or next to the range. Right now it's a 30" base (well, 29-1/2"). I think 24" is plenty for a 4-bin trash/recycle center or just 18" for 2-bin trash/recycle. BTW...they even make corner cabinet recycle centers!

Sink: If you're saying what I think you're saying, you're shorting yourself sink space. If you look at your inspiration pic you'll note the faucet is on the side b/c it won't fit behind the sink. While it may look nice, I don't think it'll function that well. What I think would look nicer, is a bumped out sink base w/feet (27" or so deep). It will also give you extra space behind the sink.

Freezer/Ovens: As mentioned earlier, you have no landing area for the freezer or ovens...especially important for the ovens!

Corner w/window: Do you have enough room there to take out the drawers? The drawers themselves will fit, but 34" is a pretty big span to reach across and under to release the drawer & pull out (and then replacing them). If there's enough room to stand in front of the drawers fully extended + 3 or 4 inches, then you're OK.

Corner open cabinet: Will you be able to reach items on those shelves in the far corner?

I think your layout looks very nice. The trash could be an issue for you - it wouldn't bother me at all but I a much more form than function. It occurs to me that the simplest solution would just be to install a garbage disposal in the sink. They can take care of an awful lot.

I do agree with Buehl about the Landing Place for hot things from the oven. It's a serious safety issue. You can easily remedy it by reversing the positions of the Hutch and the refrigerator, so that things could come out of the oven and directly on to the hutch countertop.

It will be a couple of steps, but if you are right-handed, you'll find it natural to turn to the right.

The sink cabinet is very attractive and the inset will allow your husband to spend many comfortable hours there I am sure ;)

Maybe simplify a bit and amplify the horizontals by forcing the panels in the frzr door to align with the bottom of the ovens and the top of the ovens. My crappy drawing of less lines and an adjust of the cross rails of the frzr door.

If the ovens open by the door dropping down or opening towards the right, you may want to reverse the oven and frzr areas so the ovens are closer to the sink counter (landing space is closer).

As a contrasting view, USING the corner near the range doesn't seem to get you much - you lose a set of drawers, a wall cabinet and about 6 inches of usable counter space.

Buehl and sailormom: Thank you so much for you comments. I started out so function over form and ended up with quite the reverse! Don't ask me how because I really don't know.

Currently, I have a lazy susan in the corner but thought I'd give it up in the interest of larger drawers. Just today I was reconsidering that decision, especially after studying the trash cabinet placement. If I put the super susan back that would give me a 12" pull out to the right of the range, the super susan and a 24" drawer base to the left of the sink. How do you think that would look and function compared to a 24" and 30" drawer base with a 6" open cabinet to hold cutting boards?

The trash cabinet is only 19". It has a 9" can pull out next to it.

The drawers to the left of the range will be no problem to access as I have drawers there now (in an even tighter arrangement) and it's never been a problem.

It may not look it on paper, but the ovens and freezer are just a turn and step away from the peninsula counter. The oven wall has a combi steam oven and my second oven (the main oven is in the range). However, it might be a good idea to swap the freezer and oven positions. This would put the ovens even closer to the landing on the peninsula and allow the freezer to open on the side closest to the counter as well. (I can't swap the ovens with the refrigerator because they're already bought and open the wrong way. Plus, I use the fridge much more than the ovens and it would be too far from my prep and work space.)

Buehl, the sink cabinet is a regular size on top, it's just the space below the sink that steps back so the faucet should be ok. But I'll be sure to double check this before ordering. Thanks.

Oh, and you're right about the wall cabinet in the corner on the range wall. It really isn't accessible, especially since the counter is 30" deep there, so it's only decorative. I'm a little nervous about it as I'm not really sure how it'll look. Any thoughts?

Thanks for the drawing Bmore (I missed your post while typing mine). I really like it. I am planning on using the space above the ovens for vertical tray storage. I have to check the measurements to see if they'll still fit in the top and whether I can reach them. Or, we could make the oven and freezer cabinets the same height, with an open cabinet above them that spans the width of both as in the bad picture below. I have to agree it looks so much better without the tall doors above the oven. I hope I can make it work.
