Placing a stovetop and range in the corner of a kitchen

We are redoing our kitchen and plan to take out a wall between the kitchen and the den. We will leave about 4-5 feet of wall which will create a corner where I would like to install a stovetop and range. Has anyone ever designed a kitchen with the stove in a corner? Pros and cons?

Better Homes and Gardens October 2009 had an article called "Working Order" which showed pictures of a nicely done kitchen--in it was a Wolf range in the corner. The kitchen looks absolutely amazing and I based my kitchen design around it, although I didn't have enough room for a range in the corner. Hopefully you can find a copy of it somewhere.

We have a 36" (4 burners and griddle) range in a corner and while it's not for every application, it just seemed to fits ours. We were toying with doing a corner range, and one day when pawing thru the remnants at a stoneyard, I found 2 pieces of green and purple mottled VT/NY slate from a corner range display they had changed out. They charged me $20 each, and the corner range deal was sealed. We are very happy with how it turned out.

You do lose some storage, but for us it wasn't a deal breaker, we wanted the corner range more than the storage.

susanpn- Thank you for your kind words, right now it's an unfitted and, well, undone kitchen, hopefully before too long it will just be unfitted, we are inching our way towards the finish line. The ceiling is doug fir (untreated) beadboard, the thing that look like a track is actually a cedar board, the ceiling is laid in a grid pattern to break up the expanse of the somewhat fussy beadboard. We have a wood hood (without liner or blower) that I bought when a local tile place was changing out their displays. It was a corner installation over a 36" range, sort of a farmhouse-cum-vintage something or other style, and I think it will work. I will post pics when we are finished. Also, as I look at these pics, I see how pathetic the range looks without the side shelving and counters, I will take a pic of that and try to post tonight. sandyponder

Korney19, Thanks for all the pictures! One thing several people have mentioned is the concern for having to do everything from the front of the oven and not being able to stand to the sides to check or pick heavy dishes up. I never stand to the side to check or pick anything up now. Plus in the most of the pictures I have seen it seems that there is enough room, although more awkward, for two people to pick up a super heavy dish. So although it is definitely a concern I don't think my decision to not do it would be based on that issue. For me, the biggest concern mentioned by everyone is the extra space it takes up. But right now the only other option I can see for my kitchen is to put the stove and fridge side by side which will use up all the space on one wall. I would rather have some highly useable space on the wall than the less useable corner space. Again, I really appreciate all the comments and it is definitely helping decide what we want to do.

I thought about it, and I think it makes more sense to post it here b/c this is the thread where you're asking for comments...so here is a repeat of what I posted on the Flip Up thread: _____________________________________________________ Are you open to other options? How about something like this? It has... Plenty of counter space in the right places: 54" of workspace in the primary Prep Zone - between the range and corner prep sink Over 60" on the peninsula plus the corner plus 25" or so over the DW for the Cleanup Zone Or, that 60" on the peninsula could be a secondary Prep Zone 20" or so of landing space to the left of the range....it could also be a small work space or a place to hold utensils, potholders, etc. A view out the window in the primary Prep Zone where most people spend most of their time or a view to the Breakfast Nook if using the secondary Prep Zone. Well protected Cooking and primary Prep Zones Separation of the Cleanup Zone from the Prep & Cooking Zones Storage in the right places...upper cabinets for dishes & glasses near the DW, a 24" wide cabinet on the peninsula that could hold silverware and other dishes, 36" wide drawers next to range for pots & pans, etc. Small appliance storage or a small pantry in the corner susan in the peninsula. MW and refrigerator both on the periphery of the work zones so they are easily accessed from the kitchen/cooks as well as the outside/snackers...without those snackers getting in the way of the workers in the kitchen Deeper counters on the sink run to add 3 more inches of space behind the sink Because of the deeper counters, you can easily have deeper upper cabinets. Those extra 3" (15" deep vs 12" deep) add a surprisingly significant amount of space! Trash pullout in the Prep Zone and near the Cooking Zone - where the most trash and recyclables are generated and for the longest amount of time Work Zones.... Or even this? Same comments as above still apply, but it doesn't have quite as much prep space, so I would prefer #1. (Pots & Pans could go in the corner susan on the bottom right.)

I am not quite sure how to comment to specific people, so thank you to everyone. Tozmo1: We actually decided to get rid of the trim and make an even larger functional bottom (6"), but, yes, 4" is what the top drawing depicts. We also tried a bunch of configurations. Sushipup1: We are definitely considering frameless for the purpose of space. I think this is what you are suggesting. MizzLizzie - I think I understand what you mean and that could be a good idea. Do you have a photo by any chance? I would love to see closed/open! B F: With the new layout we plan to start the drawer/cabinet a few inches from the corner so that it won't encounter the oven handles.

Check out Igloochic and Histokitch. Their ranges are not caddy cornered but are in the corner.

I actually have lots of questions, but figured I would go little by little and take the time. Next question...why can't I leave the area behind the cooktop open? I would like to use that triangle to put cooking utensils, etc. I also feel it would give a more open look to the corner. Is there a reason that I never see that done? Thanks so much.

It eats up a LOT of space to do this. Almost 4 feet in two directions. It's not for a small kitchen or one short on storage.

And, the reason you see a wall constructed behind one done this way is that to leave it open would mean you'd have to have about 3 feet long arms to reach to the back of that little wedge to be able to clean it. Most wouldn't be able to clean back there unless they pulled the range out. Not something most want to do for everyday cleaning.

Have you checked out the Finished Kitchens Blog (FKB)? There are several kitchens w/ranges or cooktops in a corner. If you have the space (and they do take up a lot of space), it can work.
