Do you sell off furniture before a long-distance move?
Comments (32)Hi again everyone. Just a few thoughts... Lisa I am sorry to have made you add things up! It's exactly what sent me reeling. Making the list and looking at the numbers, all in one shot, was stunning! I am actually very happy about the move, even though the process is difficult. I really love my home here and the way it has turned out. It's been a joy to work on and I am finally feeling pleased with the results. Interestingly, the staging process seemed to seal the deal. A little less furniture and clutter and the place looks "perfect" to me. (To the powers that be, may I please carry this awareness to the next place!) But we have never felt like we fit in here in FL. Going to MA is like going home. Our friends and family are there and the general mentality is a much better fit for us. DD has said repeatedly she wishes we could pick up this house and move it. To some degree, I will recreate certain elements up there...like in the kitchen. As for finding a good mover, we have been referred to someone by our piano dealer. We have a mid-sized grand to store and ship and supposedly this company is the best. (Don't even ask where we're going to fit that thing!) I have seen movers do a hack job. As a confirmed control freak, I'd love to do it myself! But that is ridiculous, of course. We will hire the best and just hope for a positive experience. Nothing we own is without patina anyway. Funny, Hoyamom, I woke up this morning thinking about my grandmother's silver. I think that will go in the car with me. So, if anyone's still reading, do you think I need to offer things at 25% like my realtor suggests? A good friend suggests I start at 40% and work from there. Patina or no, this stuff is only 4-6 years old and it's mostly name brands people would know and recognize. The dining table is the first thing you see on the Ethan Allen website when you do a product search for dining rooms! So, it's still relevant....See MoreWhy My Home Is Still Undone 13yrs Later....
Comments (24)What's great thread and thanks toTheFoxesPad for the delightful my written story that started it. I am a decision delayer and my recently acquired husband, with whom I do not yet live, is a pre-hoarder. That is, he has pretty good taste but becomes extremely attached to anything he takes in, and he doesn't see why he should stop acquiring things just because he doesn't need more. So if he likes it, he'll get it, but nothing ever goes out. We live about 10 blocks apart and thought we could wait until we retire in about 5 years to live together, because he is extremely allergic to my cats - meds don't help. But now we don't want to wait and are going to fix up his large garage for me and the cats to move into. Only he doesn't want to think about these decisions, and I can't make them. Getting a decorating buddy (design buddy in this case) is an idea I came up with too so glad to see someone else has it! I write a blog with a couple other librarians and just this week I started a series on books about organizing. One of my favorites is The Organizing Sourcebook by KatbyWaddill, partly because she says there's no perfectly organized, just good enough for how you live right now. I think that should be true of decorating, for many of us, too. I have read posts where people are obsessing about exactly the right shade of granite for the counter - but we are such a rest less culture, she's going to be freaking out over the right species of wood for butcher block in5 years. Can it really matter that much? Bronwynsmom, I am completely with you....See MoreKitchen remodel has begun! LOTS of Pictures
Comments (91)nancy - it's great! the first morning tho I forgot about it being there and was confused not to see the sky out my window! I was half asleep still (still in bed) - my curtain in the bedroom is always partially pulled back. if you know the cost of the product - and the price of it being put down then you'll know what you are being charged for the carpet pull up and plywood. maybe someone could do it for a better price (the carpet and plywood). I'm sure you'll love it with the carpet out - that's what I'm hoping to do. depends on the prices tho....See MoreMy reply and more to Rosesstink question about long distance driving.
Comments (16)Thank you Rosesstink. I think you are right about that. The more I do it, the easier it will become. I have to admit that it was much easier since I brought my iPod and listened to Dan Fogelberg all the way. His music soothes my soul and calms my heart. On the way back I couldn't get it to work until I left Des Moines. I couldn't believe that I missed that the Belkin thing wasn't completely plugged into the iPod! The rest of my trip home was much calmer. Wow! I'm Happy and I know It, I didn't realize we were both from eastern Iowa. That will always be home to me. We were not far enough north to be across from Dubuque, but plan on traveling further later this month if I get a chance to go. I have to work around our grandsons schedule and go on days he's with his mom two days in a row. Thank you Ellende. I was very happy that I made the trip too. It was good for all involved. Even my other cousins and bested friend were touched by my coming home for Jeannie. All who know her love her and were happy to see her so happy. I'm a changed person after seeing how strong she is in her day to day living with cancer and knowing her time is limited. Not that all our time isn't limited, but when your body is as ravaged by disease and chemo as hers, you know your limits are a lot closer than you'd like. Riosamba, thank you so much for the comment about the picture of us. I love it so much. Jeff took one of us in March too and it shows how that last round of chemo aged Jeannie. As happy as I was being with Jeannie, I think the picture taken recently shows a difference in me too. Those six months were pure hell worrying about her. Each time the phone rang and it was Jeff, I was afraid to answer. Now that I've seen her strength building since chemo has stopped I'm comforted in how better she feels. We tried to tell her, but with the help of chemo brain, (it really screws up ones thinking and memory) she thought stopping it was giving up. SheilaAus, thank you for checking in and commenting. I wasn't sure about posting more about Jeannie, as I didn't want to bore anyone with so many posts, but when I saw the thread about traveling, I thought I'd share. I'm glad I did....See Morebadgergal
