LOL!! Biochem, thanks for pointing that out. I've liked similar pantries in other renditions, but I always hated this one. The cabinetry is way out of balance, and it makes no sense when there's a hall running alongside the wall of the pantry where a normal door could be.

This strikes me so funny - mainly because this is the third time in a 24-hour period that the name Max Ernst has come up. First, when I saw a painting titled Pleiades early this morning (or yesterday morning - Thanksgiving) and then when I brought it up at dinner with my husband and now, a third time.

I agree, foot pulls and I picture myself tripping and cracking my skull open on the tile floor. Or if I could prevent the fall no doubt I would have a big pot of boiling pasta water splashing me or anyone near by.

As an almost instinctive contrarian I want to say I like it but I can't think of a single rationalization. Regardless, I think it's lovely (no explanation forthcoming).

I think the particular glee comes from the fact that it is clearly a pricey kitchen.

It seems mean spirited to make fun of a kitchen remodel that is resource-constrained, but there are no limits to ridicule where the project clearly involved professionals and large expenditure.

Partly because there is no good reason for such a mistake to have occurred and be uncorrected. Partly classist schadenfreude.

No...there are no limits to ridicule when someone spends that much money and the results are so hideous. The stupid floating columns are just icing on the cowpie that is that kitchen. I don't go looking for mistakes in obviously expensive kitchens when the results are beautiful and functional kitchens; I just enjoy them vicariously.

For me, it's that the firm and designer are credited, like they're proud of those floating ankle biters. If it were DIY I'd be compassionate. If it were "and we didn't have enough money left to fix it, WAAA!" I'd try to help. Ya put this out as an example of your professional prowess and you're setting yourself up for no holds barred critique.

You are right, one has to wonder why a (clearly professional) photo was even taken...

Is it? I wonder. I would think a pro would have brought in what was needed to eliminate the harsh shadows from the handles, and would have known how to light in such a way as to minimize the ankle-biters.

The owner and designer are clearly being compensated for creating a buzz about these essential new fashion kitchen slippers!

I showed it to my sister and she said, "Mouse runways!" LOL. Now we know, it's actually a forward-thinking ecological design that integrates us (painfully) with Mother Nature's creatures.

That kitchen makes no sense to me...none of it. Honestly, the windows and blinds bother me almost as much as the vertically challenged columns. They.just.don't.go.with.that.kitchen!! At all! It looks like a different house. Nothing wrong with it...but it doesn't go with that ornate cabinetry. At all. It is like they just stopped. So perplexed...

I would bang my ankle one time and out would come the Sawzall and those columns would be "redesigned".

gr8day: Maybe the homeowner insisted on some of those elements, no matter how hard Turan tried to talk them out of it? It's possible; I know that as a former corporate graphic designer, sometimes the consultants I worked with would insist on something I knew to be aesthetically inadvisable. I think they wanted to assert their ultimate creative control over the project--and over me. I learned eventually to just do what they wanted and say, "Okay, this is what you asked for...here ya go!" But none of those pieces are in my portfolio.

I sent this to my husband the other night - not as inspiration but for a reaction...

Anyway, I just noticed it comes equipped with a couple of ankle-breakers as well.

Back to the kitchen from the OP. I think I see the design "issue." In accompanying photo with the oven stack, the base of the cabinets follows the lines of the columns. This was probably the intention over on the range side too, but somehow got lost or nixed for some strange reason.

I can't prevent myself from banging my shin on the dishwasher door--when I am the one who opened it, so these ankle whackers would "have" me in less than 15 minutes after install.

OMG marcolo. If my kitchen weren't done I would redesign it right now and have every piece of cabinetry sitting on Chippendale ball-and-claw feet. Which I know isn't what you posted, but it inspired this grand vision.
