need ideas for LARGE shelf liners

My new pantry has painted shelving. The shelves are "L" shaped 4'x 6' and are 12" deep.

I need to find liner that I can custom cut so that there is no seam, so the roll must be at least 48" wide. I found 1/8" rolled rubber matting on line but 300.00 is too expensive! I then found 20-40 mil clear vinyl rolls.

Will 20, 30, or 40 mil vinyl work for this? I most likely will have to order this sight unseen. Does anyone have another idea? I really don't want the seams.

jclimber, I've have a setup very similar to what you are talking about though my pond is only half the size, still large for an ornamental pond with goldfish. I have a Savio Skimmer with two pumps, one goes to a rapids effect at a small, small stream that feeds in under the biofilter fall, and, the other one pumps into the biofilter. I also have an upper pool and a lower pool separated by a wide but short water fall. The Savio Skimmer (full size) is located at the other end of the lower pool from the waterfall. My two magdrive pumps work fine. Laguna brand 3900 waterfall pumps. That all said, I would take ccoombs advice, no doubt. The number one problem with my pond is keeping the detritus and other junk off the bottom. In fact, you never can keep it off the bottom. The detritus is so fine that you only stir-it up if you get in to clean the pond. So my advice would be to go with the bottom drain setup but still use a skimmer box for the top floating stuff. Thanks for the btm drn link, ccoombs; I hadn't seen that... and thanks for the explanation of the bottom drain (not for draining, necessarily) because when I first heard about BDs that what I thought for sometime! I like the suggestions for saving money. If you can afford the time, better to make your own... esp. underlayment; I actually think old carpet (go dumpster diving at a carpet store) is superior to the underlayments I've laid hands on. Here's another suggestion: I'd get the rock out. It would be one thing if they were in the water atop the liner, but rolling liner up over them is just taking up space. Plus, you could use those big ones to help landscape at the edge. So it occurred to me when you talked about getting an electrician to bring a circuit out to the pond that this electrician is going to have to pay someone to trench. Most places are under the National Electric Code and that means burying the cable 30" or more... they're going to want to use a trencher. If you're going to have to get a trencher in for that you could save by getting a mini-excavator (rental from any tool/equip rental shop) and have it equipped with multiple bucket sizes... most come with options. get a slender bucket for the trench work, wider bucket for the rock. If an excavator can't lift the rock it should be able to beat on it enough to crack it smaller and scoop it out... of course, you could just pay someone to remove the large rocks. Whatever you decide make sure you have 'em mark the area for underground utilities. I really like your setup though. You never did say if you planned to have fish, what kind? Is that a german sheppard!? He/She will love the pond!

Just be careful with the Xavan liner which we have. A rock was knocked to the bottom in Nov of 05. It created a leak and havoc as we had a whole pond of koi. We gathered some in another pond we have and put the rest in a kiddie pool in the basement and they all lived till the next April. The Xavan people were pretty hard to deal with when we called..life time guarantee doesn't mean much. They wanted me to cut a foot size piece and send it to them and they would determine if it was acceptable or not. Meanwhile if they decide not, then our liner is worthles. They sent us a seaming tape and we put it on and filled the pond up, put the fish back and the thing leaked. We went to HD and got some sort of cement glue ..really heavy duty stuff and patched the the leak up with a xavan piece and it's holding still.

I like cork in drawers. Things don't slide around but not sticky like rubber. It is thin so need to handle and cut with care, but once down and cut to the right size it stays put. (i think i got mine at pottery barn) I also have the semi-clear ribbed from Ikea that is nice for pantry shelves. Lower shelves and under the sink and in the broom closet i use black rubber mat. It is used for non-slip walkways...very heavy and doesn't show dirt for the spots that get mucky. I can take it out once a year and hose it off outside or give it a good scrub. Lasts for years. Rueben mentions crooked cuts. For me, the answer is a T-square, which you can buy where they sell art supplies. The 36" long T-square is the most useful. I just line the "T" part up with the side of the paper, and draw my square line with a sharpie. I just put new cabinets during the remodel of my family home. I got molded (?) glass panels with a striking bamboo design in the upper cabinets. I saw light coming through one cabinet door before they were installed and thought the glass was even more beautiful with light behind it. I had low profile, strip LED lights installed in the top of each cabinet. But when I p ut the supplied wood shelves in, the shelves below were very dark. So I ordered some 3/8" thick plexiglas cut to size. I bought the clear shelf liner with the little grooves. Since it is clear, the light goes right through the shelves and the cabinets and glass look beautiful. I used the rubbery mesh liner for the bottom shelves. I'm having trouble, too. They bunch up and get out of place when I move anything. That's why I got onto this thread--to see if there's a good way to hold the stuff in place.

Pardon my impudence, but insisting on NO seams on shelf liners for a pantry by hogging it out of a solid 4'x6' sheet seems a little, uhhh, extreme. Couldn't you make do with some very nice shelf liners joined by a very nicely done tape job at the seam?

I know it sounds extreme but I have a ton of drawers that need lining and plan to use the remnants. I current use the Lifeliner and I suppose I could rig up something...Not sure if that will be any more cost effective in the long run

Thanks for the input! I ended up going to Joann Fabric and bought 9 yards of 56" black marine vinyl. It was originally 16.99 sq yard but was able to use the 40% off coupon! Very happy with my purchase and hubby too!

Finally finished painting and putting down the liner. The vinyl worked out great! I wonder if should use some double sided tape on the front edges?

Looks great!

About the tape, I suppose it depends. What was your original goal with lining the shelves? To protect the shelves or to protect what was on them? If the former, then wouldn't tape undermine that goal? If the latter, then, sure!

I used commercial wallpaper, the kind that you have to add paste to before you hang it. It works great

I bought some vinyl sheets at HD. They're a harder plastic, which I cut with an exacto knife.
I think the closest comparison is the type of plastic vinyl they now sell to put on top of ventilated shelving, which IMHO, invalidates the point of ventilated shelving.

Anyway, good job.
It's nice to find something you're happy with.

or at a fabric store (W used to sell it in their fabric area) you could buy oil cloth. It's not oily...lol!

it's a vinyl with a backing on it (like a felt). OR think of a vinyl tablecloth (that's like oil cloth).
