Our DIY Beadboard Island!!

Okay, so it's isn't 100% complete, we still need a baseboard and trim on the corners but just thought i would share a sneek peek.

And my new little yellow lamp from Pottery Barn Outlet for $40 (regularly go for $100, YIKES!!)

I have both black and brown Tibetan stools from Pottery Barn (one set i use for an outdoor play area), which do you think looks best with the off white island??

You did a great job and I personally like the brown because I feel like the black look too stark against the white.

Oh definitely the brown. What remodelfla said. The color is such a nice rich brown. Wish I had a place for some! Your kitchen is looking so nice and warm!

Hi Oceanna, LOL - sometimes I get stubborn and don't ask for help! Don't ask me about the time that I thought re-sodding a lawn would be simple (you have no idea how heavy grass can be) Here are my thoughts regarding the paintable wallpaper. I don't think that it would withstand high traffic/heavy use areas where there would be the potential for dents and cuts. I have mine in a guest bathroom and am currently installing it in the adjoining bedroom. These rooms are only used occasionally. However, it is a rather inexpensive experiment - I think that I only paid $25.00 per double roll at Creative Wallcoverings. You could order a sample and play around with it. I also think that the durability would depend on the quality/type of paint that was used. I used a flat wall paint because it was what I had on hand. I would think that in an area such as a kitchen, a satin or semi-gloss would be a better choice. Regarding the installation - I glued/nailed the chair rail right over the wallpaper without any problems. I did not remove the baseboard; just papered the wall with about 2 inches extra hanging at the bottom. Then, using my razor and the wallpaper smoother, I simply cut the paper to fit. I changed the razor after 2 cuts - they get dull very quickly. Just let me know if you have any more questions. As others have said it's hard to say without seeing pictures, but, one thing you said makes me wonder if the beadboard look will work. You mention that this is a corner. Does this mean you would only put beadboard on two walls? IMHO it needs to tie in to the surrounding areas. I don't think I've ever seen it used on just some of the walls in a space. I actually looked for this when I was remodeling my open plan basement. I really wanted to use beadboard but couldn't find a logical way to use it on some walls and not others.

Hey there - we did a beadboard backsplash in our kitchen and had to just end it on one wall and do something between the subway tile behind the stove and the beadboard as well. We just used a 3/4 inch piece of molding. I wasn't sure about it, but we also used fairly heavy molding at the bottom and top and the molding ended up working just fine - I actually had a smaller piece - it was 3/4 wide and half that deep (a rectangle) but we switched to 3/4 x 3/4 to have the scale go along with the heft of the molding... Here's a pic, if I can remember how to do these pictures! Here's where it just caps off the beadboard - you can see that it just sort of blends in - I tried to get it a little zoomed in! Jon - Oye, I didn't think of that. I'm sure they were sprayed. I called a builder (actually not the guy that built my house buy long story) and asked about the clear coat. He said he could probably order it and would find out. Here's wording off their page. It just says provides the same results as our factories. Page 133 in the link. "The listing represents the matching stains, paints, and glazes as well as clear sealer/topcoat available for Merillat cabinetry or for where ever finishes need to be reproduced. Available in quarts only. The stains are a "two-step" process, requiring first the application of the hand-wipe stain, followed by an application of the clear sealer/topcoat. Instructions and safety data sheets are packaged with each can of stain or clear sealer/topcoat. Each stain has been developed for a specific wood specie, & is listed within the stain name, i.e cherry cider. Blah, blah, blah, etc. For the same color "Natural", the sealer/topcoat provides the same results as our facilities. For optimum in-field color matches, it is recommended that the clear sealer/topcoat be applied following stain application." I don't have a sprayer and that would be difficult to do already on the island. The thought of needing "professional-grade respirators and ventilation equipment" doesn't make me want to use that if that's the case. I'll run out today and grab some other sealers. I have always loved your warm kitchen, the white on the island really "pops" and looks just perfect with the other white shutters. Another vote on the brown.

What a nice change -- really does make the island "pop" and I really see all the elements in your kitchen now - the counters, the cabinets, the shutters, put together so nicely. Another brown vote.

I'm impressed with way it turned out and how quickly you got it done -- weren't you posting just last week on whether to do it? Doncha know you're supposed to lurk for weeks if not months in indecision and second guessing? Beautiful, ties in nicely with the white shutters, and your DH deserves a treat.

Brown is, so far, unanimous.

It really pops the island! Good job! Oh, and I'll continue to make Brown the unanimous choice :).

Now, here's the real question - your kitchen is still as clean & pristine as it is in the first finished kitchen pic - why doesn't mine (ever) look like that???!!!! ;-D

Another vote for brown stools. The island brightens up the kitchen. What creamy white did you end up using?

It looks great! Like everyone else, I like the brown stools. The lighter island really pulls in your door, window and trim. It definitely lightened the look, and I like that the island has its own personality.

Love the Beadboard island and how warm and inviting your kitchen looks. In keeping with that warm theme, I'd go with the brown.

Thanks for all the positive feedback on the island. It is hard to tell in the picture but the color of the island is Acadia White by benjamin moore. It is actually a pottery barn white and is a little more cream colored than the white shutters.

I am liking the brown stools as well, it's unanimous, they are staying!!!

bluekitobsessed, yes, this was a quick weekend project. I guess when i have my mind set on something i want in down now. I know, i need to take heed of the "patience is a virtue" proverb, haha.

Moonkat99, lol, no this kitchen isn't always that clean. With 3 kids and a DH that is next to impossible. I guess when i take pics i instinctively clean before any pictures are actually taken.

fran 1523, we ended up us Benjamin Moore's Acadia white. It is in the Pottery Barn Fall collection and i love it!!

ccat, we got our shutters from a place called American Shutters here in the Los Angeles/Orange County area. It is a small bussiness and family friend so i got a great deal on the whole house.

Every time I see a picture of your beautiful kitchen I regret not choosing my first choice of hickory. I wish I'd have not listened to our kitchen design guy who said that I'd probably tire of the grainy look of it. After seeing your kitchen many times I know that I wouldn't have tired of it.

I just love everything you did in your kitchen. It is so warm and inviting. Great job on the island.
