Backsplash design...would love your opinions
Comments (32)I think one of the things that ends up missing in a lot of discussions about backsplashes, is that they are supposed to be easier to clean and more durable than a painted wall, and a painted wall is fairly easy to clean and pretty durable. I think the argument that a backsplash is needed because you are going to splash things on it gets a little weaker when the backsplash is stone or mosaic that is primarily ornamental and would be susceptible to stain and water absorption without sealing it. My gym recently updated the showers with stone tile and mosaic. They removed tile showers that were probably 60 years old. The stone requires a lot more maintenance, isn't as bullet proof as glazed tile, and, since they are used heavily, you can tell when they need to be resealed: they smell bad, like a combination of mold and mildew, and they feel slimy. I don't take showers there anymore. Not that this is going to happen to a residential kitchen backsplash---but my point is that a good paint would probably be just as good a backsplash from a functional standpoint as cleft stone. This sort of backsplash veers into the Ornamental category. As for the 1" backsplash not Adding anything to the look. I agree, but it doesn't subtract much from the look either: it's there primarily for function....See Morea reverse mosaic tile backsplash design? anybody?
Comments (16)thanks everybody for all your responses - this post was lost for a while and then found but for some reason I couldn't post to it - grr! I'm taking it all in! Soooooo many terrific ideas and opinions and pictures! I have considered each and every idea presented here. (I even found the pic of that kitchen you were thinking of, Remodelfla). I think my first choice is a stamped metal single large tile - only I don't want anything fancy or a landscape or fruit or a geo type pattern - I want something interesting or funky or something (that probably doesn't exist.) If I can't find that elusive special tile, I'll probably just do the solid mosaic all over, or doing the angled mosaic over the range. But, of course, I'm still toying with the other ideas and even picked up some more field tile to play with. I keep going back over the posts and pictures. Now I want some pie!!!...See MoreBacksplash advice for my grey & white kitchen
Comments (28)Jeffrey court riverwash is very similar to fireclay foggy morning. My local tile store had both on hand, and they were *very* close. Fireclay comes in a wide range of sizes. It's pricey, but absolutely gorgeous. I was also shopping for a tile like this. My short list included Senio Newport in Alabaster Craquele or Transparent White. And my very favorite was an italian tile I hadnt heard of before... I cant remeber the manuf name, and my quote just says Aspen Loft Bianco in White. It was a white tile, but with an interesting finish, almost metallic. Looked so nice with my marble-esque quartz counters. All of these were in the $11/sqft range. Here is the aspen loft bianco -...See MoreKitchen Backsplash and flooring design question
Comments (7)Please don't do an accent stripe or strip if your plan is an update. That's like going backward 15 years. Keep all the tile the same. Choose a solid subway tile that is close in color to the floors. I agree that you need a change. The 12 x 12 backsplash that mimics the floor tiles is awful but you're going too far in the other direction. A 2 x 2 is more like a bathroom shower floor tile....See MoreUser
