Are my upper cabinets going to be too tall? How tall are yours?

We have a 10' ceiling in our kitchen. I want the kitchen cabinets brought to the ceiling. Right now, they are drawn with a 6" crown and an apron as the trim above the cabinet, and 2 inches or so between the trim and the top of the inset cabinets. They are two layers of upper cabinets. The first is 14" (door height) and the lower doors are 42 1/4". Does this sound right?

The butler's pantry is drawn with 16" top cabinet and 38" below it (again, double upper cabinets). I think the reason the top cabinet is drawn bigger in there is so there is room for the glass mullions and a sufficient amount of glass . . .

Any thoughts on these proportions? The butler's pantry is just a simple run of cabinets between the kitchen and dining room in a hallway so I don't think they need to match the proportions of the rest of the kitchen. The question is, would it look better to do 16" on the rest of the uppers as well?

These are custom cabinets so he can do anything - which is good and bad because I don't have a good feel for what is standard and what all the pretty kitchens I see on here have!

There was just a thread on this a few days ago - I've linked it below in case you didn't see it.

Following their rule of thumb, if you have 56" total for the two cabinets the upper should be should be about 18", but you can do whatever you think looks good.

I have 60" total in my kitchen, so mine should 40" and 20". We aren't using custom cabinets, so the closest standard cabinets would be 42" and 18". I don't like that look, so I'm going 36" and 24". Also, I like about 12" between shelves, so that allows me a shelf spacing I'll like.

A follow up on this. I went to Lowe's yesterday to check out their selection, and I saw a shorter version of what I had in another line (mine is almost 17" and this one was 14") While I was standing there, a couple came up and were trying to decide on a faucet, and the DH points to an arched one, and the wife says, "Oh, no, I hate those. When I walk into my friend's kitchens, it's all I see, nothing else." So I had to laugh and tell her my story. We both ended up buying a pull-out style (mine is a Moen and very pretty) and when I brought it home and DH put it up against the sink, voila, that was it! You don't see the faucet anymore, it just blended. I have to say that I still love the arched ones, they're beautiful and a "work of art" as someone said, but I get so obsessed over certain things that I knew my new kitchen would be "all about the faucet," and I didn't want that.

AJsmama, I didn't have them changed b/c they go to the ceiling and then we would have to add new molding and have the oven, pantry, fridge, etc. cabinets rebuilt. I went to see another project he had done with the bases and countertops in and I feel a bit better about the height. Also b/c the ceilings are 9 foot--the doors would be really tall (they are already tall). I am ok with this, but am having a base cabinet remade b/c I was not happy with the way it was compared to the way it was drawn. I will say that if I did this again, I would do it differently--it is a long story. I think in the end, it will be very pretty. I have realized that I cannot assume anything. Thanks for asking.

My pantry-type cabinets on the opposite wall go the the ceiling. I don't know the exact size of the doors, but the overall space on either side of the fireplace is 6' wide x 11' ceiling ht. They were designed to match 150 year old exsisting cabs in the outside kitchen which were 3' shorter; my cabinet maker tried his best to talk me out of these huge doors, but I love them.

Thanks, palimpsest. These were custom built. I know we told the cabinet maker we wanted 36" high counters and that one would be laminate and the other would be tile but obviously he didn't adjust sizes to accommodate the two different counter materials. Not surprising, really. We weren't all that impressed with him or the cabs. They're sturdy enough but not as nice as what we saw in the model home (the builder switched subs after we signed). Can anyone else help me figure out if I'm measuring these correctly? If I need to make an adjustment to avoid counters 36 1/2" or higher, I want to know before the granite guys show up. TIA!
