High Style: Extra-Tall Headboards
Looking for a Little Drama? Create a Lofty Backdrop for Your Bedscape
If there's one room where I'll advocate the most for drama, it's the bedroom. Your bed is the most important piece of furniture in the room, in fact, sometimes it doesn't matter if it's the only piece of furniture in the room! This bed needs to be welcoming, relaxing, and have a presence. A tall headboard can accomplish this. It can make a low ceiling seem higher, and it can keep your bed from looking lost in a bedroom with high ceilings. It also provides a backdrop for your bedscape. I've nicknamed these unconventionally high headboards "Tall Boys." Take it away, Tall Boys!
Similarly, when confronted with the vast spread of concrete and high walls in this loft, an attention-grabbing headboard keeps the bed from getting lost and looking puny. Adding sconces over the matching nightstands visually extends the width of the bed. Together these moves create one big piece that can stand up to the scale of the room.
This tall headboard leaves plenty of room for a seriously designed bedscape: tall pillows, shams and a big bolster have plenty of room and a strong backdrop.
This Tall Boy stands proudly between two tall floor lamps. The combination is such a smart solution — it keeps the floor clear and clean, while providing a shelf for reading materials and an alarm clock.
The tall, tufted, ivory headboard here creates a strong base for a variety of patterns and a burst of peacock blue.
When using a patterned wallpaper, placing a significant headboard against it is a good move. It gives the bed a strong presence and keeps the pattern of the wallpaper from taking over.
This large headboard is actually a space saver. In a room that lacks depth, you may fear there's no room for a headboard, but a wall-mounted one like this takes up very little space. Because the room can now accommodate such a substantial-looking bed, it appears larger.
These upholstered wall panels create a headboard that draws the eye up to the contemporary tray ceiling.
An accent wall bordered with light extends across the ceiling and becomes a dramatic modern canopy.

Vintage shutters mounted to the wall create an architectural accent that serves as a headboard.
This exotic headboard fits nicely into the moulding pattern on the walls.
This oversized headboard grounds the bed on the large mirrored wall.
This headboard is a great combination of crisp modern lines and some soft tufting. This tufting plus the curves of the Wiggle chair prevent right-angle overload.
Drama! This room was created as an homage to Jane Fonda. Oscar throw pillows deserve an exaggerated backdrop!

The architect of this renovation knew he had to counter the large ceilings. While it seems counter-intuitive, the tall headboard actually makes the ceiling appear higher. The use of white makes the room look larger as well. See more of this San Francisco house.
