My vote. Go bigger than you think you want. We put in a 12x14 prep sink and I now am thinking of going larger, just 6 months in. The faucet is a little to large for the sink and the sink a little to small for its constant use... So a bigger sink is in the works.

We got the one linked below. We had a 15" in our last house, and it was too small for some things. This one is 19" and 10"deep, and feels huge. I love it.

How about the 17" squareish Silgranit to go with the big one?

Great suggestions all around, thank you! Oaktown, the Kohler is a little too big for me, but I'm glad you mentioned it because it reminded me of the galley sink. I had previously ruled it out because I thought they were all huge, but it turns out there is a 22" in one. It's probably expensive, but it sounds perfect.

The only thing is that the Galley sink you linked is stainless steel and your main sink is Silgranit. The issue is not about being matchy whatsoever. The problem is that your stainless steel sink will look water spotted while your Silgranit sink will look clean all the time, which will make your stainless seem worse by comparison. There was another thread where someone had a stainless steel prep sink with an enameled cast iron main sink, and commented on this "by comparison" issue. So, I would get both sinks in Silgranit. Just MHO!

That's a good point. Turns out the galley is also 2K for a 22" sink!!! I may go to the same material for both.

In a previous kitchen I used the same size sink for both the dish sink and the prep sink. I selected the 33" Franke single bowl. I loved it. I wish I had room in the current house to repeat it. But, I don't have enough room. If you have the room consider two full-sized sinks.

Although it may not go well with your Silgranit, we have the Kohler Iron Tones sink in an 18x18 format. The best advice we received from outside of GW was to get a good sized prep sink and put in a second disposal. It is 16x21 and 7.5" deep -- big enough to fit a turkey.

I have a Franke 16" X 16" which I really like.

Good to hear, Gooster. We're planing the Kohler Iron Tones for our prep sink. It'll be the closest sink to the stove, so we didn't want to go super small. It'll easily fit a large pot. And some hand washing may take place there on big cooking days.

We'll do the single bowl Kohler Bakersfield for the clean up sink. It isn't huge (27" internal width), but figure that's okay given that we'll have a second sink. We could've gone larger with the clean up sink, but that would've meant we could've only had one dishwasher, and how could we have managed? ;)

I went with the roughly 17" square silgranit Fori mentioned. I still sometimes find it a tad on the small side as I process lots of fruits and veggies through it. If there had been a slightly larger silgranit, I would have gotten that instead. The next available size up, however, would have used up too much of my prep space. This is the metallic gray, which is hard to photograph well, to match my supersingle cleanup sink.

Not to digress, Breezygirl, what is the faucet in your picture? I like it.

@RChicago: You'll appreciate the utility of split sinks. Our main is just a 24" farmhouse fireclay, and it's perfect for soaking large trays and cleanup. Having the second mid-size sink (#6585) is perfect for prep and thawing.

I forgot to mention that the Iron Tones is available in 16 colors (but none matte, I think), so color coordination might be possible .

Homechef--my faucets are Hansgrohe Talis S pulldowns in polished chrome. They were the very first decision I made about my new kitchen long before I had a layout or budget, etc. In the photo you see below, the Tapmaster is engaged on the prep sink so the faucet handle looks a little wonky.

Kiwigem--my island counter is black walnut plank. It dents and scratches, but I love it!
