Large format porcelain tile + prep sink faucet - swivel/no swivel

Still working on countertop tile issue. Have yet to find anything I like as well as my original choice, which turns out to be only available in 20". Not sure how I will like using such large tile, but might be worth it to get the tile I want. I've seen a few photos of large format tile that look OK - just not as interesting as smaller. On the other hand, the installation should be easier if they are in fact very flat. Anyone have advice?

I have a lavatory faucet that I might be able to adapt to use with the prep sink. I can think of pros and cons for the fact that it wouldn't swivel - small sink might not need to, avoid accidentally running water onto the counter. I think it's high enough to work, but might look odd. Do normal bar/prep sink faucets swivel?

Large tile seems ideal to me for a countertop because less grout to keep clean. Good luck!

For what it's worth...Kate-Lo, a Twin Cities tile distributor, has very large format granite pieces for instant countertops. Not sure if this is what Stef has in mind, but might be of interest to other readers...(EZ Tops( These are granite tiles that have 3 polished edges. Some are 12 x 12 and some 18 x 26. They (give the appearance of a granite slab for 1/3 of the cost. EZ Tops are the ultimate granite slab alternative.(

Lovely sense of style! Bravo! We investigated porcelain marble look-alike tile but we decided on real marble which we will have to care for without any acidic products. Beware that there is a repeating pattern in marble look-alike porcelain tile like (on wall paper which will give away the secret.) We found great deals on Amazon and at Lowes for Bianco Carrara subways, pencils, chair rails and floor and shower floor hexes (1/3 the price of tile stores). We found a gorgeous remnant for our shower bench at a marble and stone shop at an amazing price. I can't wait until it's done to post photos! But back to your house... it's gorgeous!

I've got to chime in on this because I need your help. There is currrently a Grohe in the house we just bought that I am looking to replace with a new one since it's old and looks cruddy. I can't decide on the Grohe or Price Pfister. We currently have a PF and when it leaked they sent replacement parts at no cost to me with no hassle. I liked that guarantee. I'm also looking for the 360 degree swivel since my sink is huge. The Grohe LadyLux Plus has a Dual Spray control to switch from spray to regular flow, the Ladylux Cafe you show seems to have a button you have to hold in. I do like the Vinnetta - you can point the head and keep the stream or spray on. Now I have a strange question - on the Grohe, there are red and blue marks (hot/cold), but I can't seem to see if they are on any of the others, the Vinnetta or PF. I've also read that some folks had problems with the pull-down ones like the ones displayed here in that they had to push the hose back up into the sprayer because after a while it wouldn't release up easily. So, bottom line, I need a great guarantee, a 360 swivel, a head that locks spray/stream, one where the hose will last and I was looking for one that goes with a black granite sink (but not chrome, we have horrible hard water)..........any suggestions?

Hi summery. Well, six years of daily use and no drips or malfunctions of any kind suggest that it will last. (I hope.) So far, so good. My small kitchen is gently contemporary and it's positioned in the middle of open-concept LR, DR, and FR. The ceilings are 14 feet and the south side of the house is basically all windows. The walls are full of eclectic art. The Karbon seems to fit in comfortably with our well-worn mostly contemporary furniture and textiles, a few antiques, tons of plants, and many musical instruments. I can see the Karbon from every room on this level except the bathroom. :) I'd show you a pic but my DH has asked us not to post photos.

No. It's been almost 10 years since the remodel--the new sink is also 9" at the edges--and I definitely wouldn't want a deeper kitchen sink. I do have a laundry sink not so far away. I have a grid in half the sink, but it's only about half an inch tall. It's useful, but sometimes, I could like to have a shallower sink, or something like the reef in the Kohler...Stages? The one with the prep bowls. Fixtures aren't the place to scrimp. If you're changing a big element of quality with the inch, then maybe consider price, but in the normal scheme of things, I wouldn't guess more than a few hundred dollars difference, all else being the same. If so, unless your budget is under $10K for the whole shebang, take the difference out of the finishes, not the useful bits. Keep in mind that sinks are adaptable. If you have a reason for wanting that extra inch, go for it, because it's hard to adapt a sink deeper. OTOH, I have a couple of dishpans that fit nicely in my sink and make it easy to do traditional two bowl dishwashing. Turn one over and one has a platform which is next best to the built in reef. I also have a roll up, over the sink, dish drainer grid. When I just can't stand to lean over a tiny bit, it makes a great platform for setting dishes and pots on while I wash and rinse them. That's the big thing to keep in mind. Every inch deeper your sink is, is another inch lower you have to bend to pick up a dish. I say get the 9" sink. If you can figure out three good reasons why this is wrong and why you must have a deeper sink, then I must be wrong and you should get the 10". Good luck with your decision.

Love the idea of "instant" countertops!! Presto-change-o! I wish! My Dad has done a couple of them with 12x12 granite tile with minimal grout and says it looks great. These will be 20x20 porcelain. I took a deep breath and called to order them. The guy I talked to this time said he's done similar countertops and thinks it's a great idea, so I went ahead and ordered them. I've cut 13" tile and smaller before, but never 20" so I sure hope I don't screw up. I think I will practice on some 16" cheap tiles I have for another project. But we have lots to do before we get to the tile!

As someone who just pulled out an entire countertop of 6x6 ceramic tiles, the idea of 20x20 tiles sounds fantastic.

I wish I could answer your question about whether prep sink faucets usually swivel, but I've never had a prep sink. I think I remember you writing that the sink would only be 12x12, though -- if so, I can't imagine that you would need a swivel.

How will you use your prep sink? Will it have a disposal for vegetable stems, etc?

I can't wait to see your countertops. We plan to do granite tile but may consider porcelain tile.

No, the prep sink will be at least 15" and ideally a bit larger. (12x12 was probably the tile) We don't use a disposer since the guy who put in our septic system advised against it. Since then, I've heard lots of people use them with septic systems, but I'm used to not using one. The plan is to use the prep sink for washing veggies, etc., as well as filling pots for the stove. Mainly it will leave the big sink for clean-up, and give the second person in the kitchen a place to get water without bothering the cook. I have a 25" single sink I intended to use, but realize now that it just doesn't need to be that big. Nice thing about waiting 20 years to do this is that I have a lot better idea of how we actually use the kitchen.

I can't wait to see the countertops, too, but it will be a while. We have four windows to finish before we even start on the cabinets. The house has double walls for added insulation, so the windows have to be boxed in. My dad, who is the original handy guy, did the finish carpentry on the windows that are done, so this will be our first attempt to do them without his help. Today I removed the mouldings and sanded them (not in bad shape after all these years), so tomorrow I'll get them stained. Nice to be actually doing something after all this time planning and deciding!
