Help with kitchen backsplash - Pic heavy
Comments (11)My whole house is missing color - I'm a bland person ;-) Funny, I didn't want a set-on laminate b/s since I thought that look was dated (my 1987 colonial with plain almond laminate we never bothered to update after we bought in 1994 - too many other things to fix/upgrade!). I like the thin strip of oak, not too much of a commitment til I get the quartz I really wanted (but couldn't afford/didn't have time to get installed - this was a modular home we moved into 3 months after setting on foundation, I just ordered the builder's laminate to have *some* countertop to get CO, then a year after building did the island in the same b/c we can't afford quartz everywhere or disruption, we've been trying to finish doors/windows/trim while we're living here, still have entire MBA to do, plus sink in 1/2 bath). I have been looking for the right trivets to hang over the range for decoration (but still useful). Anyway, here are some more pics of kitchen and adjoining FR, pardon the mess, we just finished lunch and are off to the library (school vacation week). Thanks! Kinda dark, but the whole kitchen (from FR) Cabinet walls Family room - the Romans are going in the bay windows as soon as we get the trim up. You can see we've been too busy finishing things to decorate yet, but I do have blinds and an area rug! Thanks again!...See MoreBacksplash Help, please! Pic Heavy & Cross posted
Comments (28)Love the color of the Gigi Stix, but I think they're too small. I really like the lighter 1x2. You get a bit of modern glitz, but it's still a natural, organic feeling tile. Is that by chance Lunada Bay Sumi-E? I did a whole wall of that in my kitchen and am really happy with it! If it is Sumi-E, then they have a matte version if you don't like the shine, but personally I like it. Very pretty when the light hits it "just so."...See MoreBacksplash Opinion red white or both ... need to make a decision
Comments (5)Both sound great and I can understand your dilemma. I had a hard time deciding which way to go with mine, too, initially. I finally decided to go with white only (Crema Marfil), because it would never limit what kind of colors and decorations I could use in my kitchen. Three years later, I know it was the right choice for me. In the Spring, I like to use pastel dishes and different holiday decs in there. In Summer I like bold, clear red, yellow, and green. In the Autumn I love pulling out my gold, greens and rust dinnerware and decs. During the Christmas Season, red & green holiday decs sneak into my kitchen, too. I've never had to worry about things clashing with my kitchen backsplash color. Plus, from a practical standpoint, if we ever decide to sell this place, potential buyers won't be put off by the colors I've used. The house next to ours has had four owners in 16 years and each one of them tore out the kitchen right away because they didn't like the colors used in there. The last reno is finishing up right now ;^D This may not be a reason that would work for you, but it has for me. Lynn...See Morex-post: Countertops and Backsplash Decisions
Comments (6)Thanks Upa! So you'd stick with the Cambria Whitney I have pictured? Or go with the marble? :) I'm having the house painted by the builder in Dunn Edwards White. It's just a white white. Which will basically be a base coat. Then, I'm hiring painters to come do the actual painting. Apparently the guys I've hired are awesome with color - as in some people just let them pick. I'm too involved for that, but I'm looking forward to their suggestions. I'd do something safe like a soft/cool gray, but I probably need to get some color going. Suggestions on that? =) The good news is, because I'm hiring my own painters after the fact, I don't have to decide color now. I can do that once the house is finished. Whew. One decision I can postpone. I will get it done before I move in, however... given that I have 4 dogs. :) Oh, and I will leave the baseboards and trim the white....See Morebreadandsuch
