Need help/advice on the kitchen layout

Dear all,

We are remodeling our mid-century contemporary house and we need help on the new kitchen layout. We plan to gut the current kitchen and start everything over. In the current kitchen, there is a wall between the dining room and the kitchen. Also, there is a door from the kitchen to the backyard. We want to have an open space so we are considering removing the wall and the door. And we want a wide windows so we prefer not to put the stove on the window side. My wife likes to have the stove and the sink/prep area as close as possible. The kitchen is about 11'X13'. The dining room is about 11'X9'.

I'm attaching 2 options that our designer gives us. The little square in the middle of the kitchen is the location of the skylight.

Welcome all the comments. Thank you in advance.

# What are your goals?

To update the old kitchen and increase the storage and functional space. The kitchen plan we currently get does not have enough tall cabinets.

# What is your family composition? Adults? Children? Age ranges of children? Current? Future?

2 adults and 1 newborn. We might have 1 more after 2 years.

# How many kitchen workers are there? Cook(s)? Cleanup? Helpers? Now? Future? (E.g., if you have young children, plan for them as teens for both "sizing" of seating as well as helping in the kitchen in general)

Generally one cook only and probably one helper/cleaner

# How do you see your kitchen used? Just for cooking/cleaning up? Children doing homework while you cook?

Just cooking/preparing food.

# Do you entertain a lot? If so, formal or informal?

We do not entertain a lot.

# Do you want your kitchen to be a "hang out" place? Parties only? Everyday?

Probably not. It's a small kitchen

# Do you have a separate DR? Do you use it frequently? Infrequently? If infrequently, do you want to begin using it more frequently (e.g., for daily/nightly family meals)?

The kitchen is next to the dining room. We plan to use the dining frequently.

# Would you like to open up the kitchen to adjacent areas? Close it up?

We plan to open it up to the dining room.

# Where are you flexible?

* Can windows or doorways change size? The larger the better. The windows are facing the backyard/patio

* Can they be moved or eliminated? Not eliminated.

* Can windows be raised/lowered? Yes

* Can any walls come down? The wall between the dining room and kitchen can come down. But the wall that separates the kitchen and living room is a load bearing wall.

* Does the sink have to be centered under a window? Preferable

* Does it have to be under a window at all? Yes

# If one can be fit...

* Do you bake a lot and do you want a Baking Center? No

* Do you want a coffee/tea/beverage center? Yes

* Do you want a snack center? No

# What appliances do you plan on having (helps to figure out work flow, work zones, and types of cabinets...upper/lower vs full height, etc.)

We will have the following:

* Range or Cooktop or Rangetop? 30" rangetop

* Single or Double or no Wall Oven? Single 30" wall oven

* Warming Drawer? No

* MW? 30" MW Drawer

* DW? 1 Standard DW

* Refrigerator (Top/bottom freezer, SxS, or all-fridge/freezer? Counter-depth (CD), standard-depth, or built-in?) Samsung French Door CD 36"

* Ventilation Hood? 36" hood

Specific Questions:

1. Is there enough space to put the wall oven/MW stack next to the 30" stove?

2. We believe we will not have enough upper cabinets. Will that be a problem?

3. Where can we create space for pantry storage?

4. Which option is better in terms of functioning/storage?

Thank you.
