lazy susan for 36' corner base cabinet

We are in the processes of picking cabinets, and the kd that we may go with said we could live w/out a lazy susan. I wanted a wood lazy susan with 2 shelves. We are at budget and I am not sure if he is trying to save us $ or not. Also reminded us that the garbage pails are smaller than the stand alone ones, and they do take up a cabinet. We have a medium size kitchen that is getting gutted and needs additional support in an extention area, and a header added. We picked out custon cabinets, w/ full extentions & soft closure. Not sure what to do about other extras. All planning GE Profile SS appliances.

My 2 cents is get the lazy susan and, if you are strictly adhering to budget, drop the soft closure. A corner with space I can't get to would drive me nuts ~ drawers that don't have a fancy closing, not really.

I would recomend a super susan it has no pole and the shelf turns on ball bearings. The post takes up alot of room. I would do a search on this forum for super susans and blind corners. I think you will find the threads helpful. I agree with previous post, you will hate those blind corners and wasted space.

single trays lay flat on shelves allowing you to keep the whole volume of the inside of the cabinet instead of shrinking the inside walls to fit around the lazy susan. So the sides and corners can store more packages etc. stack cans,,,bottle water etc in those spaces..

My lazy susan in my old kitchen was the most functional cabinet in the entire kitchen. Yes, lazy susan, it had a center pole. Like Marcolo's, it had the door attached to the shelves so it rotated inside the cabinet. No doors hitting cabinets on the side or to get in the way of accessing the items stored there. Nothing could fall off of it b/c the walls of the cabinet followed the contour of the shelves so closely that about all that would fit b/w them was air. 13 years old and it still rotated smoothly and was so easy to use! With a Blind Corner Unit, if something falls off a shelf, you cannot close it until someone crawls into the back to retrieve it. When I briefly toyed with one b/c it looked "cool", my KD strongly discouraged it b/c of the complaints she's had from clients who insisted on one and now regret it. So, what did I store in my lazy susan in my old kitchen? All my pots & pans (and I had more then than I do now), colanders, pie tins, cake pans, and various serving dishes/items. Unfortunately, I don't have pictures...I didn't realize how useful pics like that would be at the time and so only took very general "before" pictures. With my new kitchen, I was really looking forward to having one to hold all my small appliances, but instead I ended up w/a Pet Center cabinet that was turned 90o and faced outward (at my DH's request). I now store most of my small appliances in my pantry and still miss the Super Susan I almost had! Kodak1...I suggest you post a floor plan b/c it might help us to see what your options are in the various corners...including answering your question about your range location. Some options: Corner Susan, cabinet turned 90o to face the other side (assuming an open side), corner prep sink (or main sink), etc. Good luck!

ShaggyDogs - can you do a 36"x33" corner susan? It will give you a bigger opening - that's the biggest limiting factor in a 33"x33" corner susan. Corner susans can be very useful. They're great for pot & pan storage - especially if you don't have drawers for them. They're also great for small appliances. Everything is always in front. You just rotate the shelf/shelves until the item you want is in front - then easily lift it out! I loved the one in our old Kitchen. We stored all our pots & pans, colanders, and large serving pieces in one 36"x36" corner susan - it was a lazy susan (pole down the center) with the doors attached to the shelves so they rotated into the cabinet when it was open. Blind corner cabinets are useless without swing outs or roll out tray shelves (ROTS) You can't store anything in front of the ROTS b/c it needs to be clear in front of them to pull them out. Swing outs can be problematical - especially if something falls off the shelves in the interior - you have to send a small child inside to retrieve the item and you cannot close it until it's retrieved! My KD demonstrated a couple of different models for us - she said most people come back complaining about the swing outs so she moves heaven and earth to not use a blind corner! My MIL has upper and base blind corners (no ROTS or swing out) and she says they're a waste b/c it's too difficult to get into them - she doesn't store anything in the "blind" areas. You may be better off voiding out the corner if the opening is too small to be useful on a 33"x33"....or consider corner drawers, but they will probably be very expensive.

My Ikea lazy susan cab sits right next to my sink cabinet. I've read many posts here where peeps complain that the Ikea susan wastes space (it's a 38x38" cab and there is about 4 or 5 inches of empty space between the shelves and the the cabinet sides. Well, I find this "wasted space" perfect for storing large items upright that don't fit in any other cabinet and that I use when working at the sink. On one side of the susan, I store a super sized cutting board that we use for prepping over the sink/counter and an extra large tray that we use daily to carry dishes and food from the kitchen to the dining room and back. On the other side of the rotating susan we've installed a pull-out double towel rail for my dish towels (my under-sink pull-out holds a trash can and cleaning supplies and I really didn't want to keep my dish towels in there). The bottom holds a foldable step stool The rotating shelves hold my salad spinner, an extra dishpan and colanders of various sizes, a well as small appliances such as the juicer, mixer, food processor, blender etc. Plus I have plenty of space left for new gadgets in the future. :-) During planning our new kitchen, I worried that opening the double doors of the susan cab and retrieving the items on the shelves would would feel awkward, but that's not the case at all. I'm glad I ignored the much repeated advice on this forum, to forgo the corner cab altogether or do a blind corner. Best of luck with your kitchen remodel.

You could order the super susan shelves later and just get the 36" cabinet with shelves to start with. We have 2 super susans and can't imagine not having the turn tables on the shelves. It's a big cabinet and most things would be very hard to get at without the turntable. For our upper corner cabinet, I just ordered the turntables on my own off e-bay

But it would help to get a better idea of cost differences first. Could you do other things to save - like help with demolition? We have soft close and love it - especially since we keep our dinnerware in a drawer. We also saved thousands by getting floor models for our stove and fridge.

Super Susans must come from the factory. No aftermarket install. THey won't fit through the door of the cabinet. So, get that now. But, get more cabinet quotes. If you are at budget and haven't even gotten a proper corner cabinet, then you need to choose a different cabinet line. Or, your budget is unrealistic given your wants and expectations. Do more investigating.

I think it depend on how you plan to use that corner. I couldn,t wait to get my super susan in and now that I have it I don,t use it. I put in a large pantry at the same time and that took away my need for it. For me the space would work better with the double hinged door thats on it know versus the old cabinet door that was on oneside only and made access extemely hard. With the double hinged door I have easy access all the way to the back and it would be a great place to put large seldom used things like my pasta machine and canning stuff. If I wasn,t selling the house I would have already pulled out the super suzan in favor of a open large storage space.
