Why should I get double wall oven or 2 ovens?

We're currently building. Double wall oven seems typical on new construction in our price range. If not double oven, they have the range/oven plus 1 wall oven.

Looking at our lifestyle, we don't need 2 ovens. I'm not sure though if that will change. But right now, we even rarely use the oven.

I'm hesitant to spend extra $$ for an oven we will never use. Or maybe I just don't know how great it is to have 2 ovens? lol. Tell me why you need 2? Regarding resale, would you ignore a house with only 1 oven?

I've only ever had one oven and wish I could have a second. It seems that every time I've doing a roast or pizza, for example, I want to have a side dish or dessert also in the oven--but at a different temperature. Or more racks of cookies or some such than I can fit in one oven. This has only really become a problem after retirement when we have 3 meals a day at home and entertain more now than ever. Like you, when we were working I used the range for one thing occasionally and the rest was take-out or micro. For this house, I got a combo micro/convection oven that I can use but it's not very big and the dish has to be small enough to rotate in the cavity. It's not the most functional setup but it's the most cost effective for us. Or (as someone said in thread I've included) I adjust the menu to avoid the oven traffic jam.

For resale, I would not ignore a house with just one oven even now after retirement. If you're truly concerned about one oven affecting resale, maybe you can plan a cabinet that someone could later retrofit without ripping out the kitchen?? Or, have your one oven be nicer than the perhaps builder-grade double ovens in the neighbors' houses.

There's another thread discussing a wall oven vs range, which could perhaps help you too. Personally, now having a wall oven at waist level rather than a range at practically floor, plus being tall and a bad back, I would only want a range if I also have a wall oven.

All this said, you've said your lifestyle doesn't use an oven much: do you see that changing while you're at this house? Is this your forever house where maybe your lifestyle will change like mine did (though we cheated and moved lol)? Is the extra money for a second oven going to be an issue requiring sacrifice of something else better for your lifestyle? Maybe thinking about it with these types of questions in mind will be helpful.

It's nice to be able to have multiple things going at different temperatures.

Having 2 ovens is key for large family meals where everything should be served warm at the same time like at Thanksgiving or Easter.

If you have one person cooking and another baking, it's nice to have separation of space for each to work without getting in the other's way.

Would it make or break a house buy for me if all other aspects of the house were to my liking? No, I could always put in a double oven range. But, I do know some people who would pass - yep. You might want to put 2 ovens in just because it is the norm in your area and price range. Any less might feel like not enough.

When we bought our second house 8 years ago I thought it was a luxury. I used both ovens frequently when we entertained, especially at the holidays. We are currently in a rental while we build a house and it only has one oven. We had friends over two weeks ago and I really missed the second oven. My friends teased me because I was lost without it. They obviously manage with one but we like to entertain and always host Thanksgiving and/or Christmas so I have decided I could never go back to one oven.

Yes, upon reflection, an underccounter oven would not be good for my back. I was thinking that maybe I would only use the second oven for parties and holidays, but sometimes we have friends over every weekend. Good point about the cost of separate ovens. I do like the look of double ovens, too. Especially the Bosch 800 series and the Kenmore Pro, but it is very hard to find anything on them...few mixed reviews online. I will ask on this forum. And do some research on Electrolux as well, since they seem to be popular here. I saw the Wolf cooktop at Great Indoors. My mother has a Wolf range, but she hates to cook. Lol. OK, will also look for the Capital. Hadn't heard of it until this forum. Yes, found ajmadison and HomeEverything. HomeEverything has slightly better prices, and usually free shipping. Yes, you're right, I couldn't find a published price on the GE Monogram counter-depth anywhere. I have to call or email each site to get the price, and from what you and the GI saleslady said, there probably won't be much difference except for no tax if I buy online. I have accepted that I can't vent with an OTR MW. I will have to spring for an undercabinet hood. Bleah. $1400. Ugh. Loss of cabinet space. Boo. I am thinking that, since I was planning for stacked 42" + !2" or 36" + 18", I will have to mount the MW under a cabinet...h'mmm...maybe I will have to do a mullion door on a 36" or 42", since the 12" or 18" are supposed to be mullion? Thought briefly about putting MW in island, but kids are 6 and 10 and tall, too. LOVE the Kitchens forum. I currently have an electric coil cook top, double wall ovens and the MW on the counter. My new kitchen will have a Bosch 500 series 36" gas cook top and a 30" Whirlpool regular double wall oven. The MW will go in a nook above a counter. I love having wall ovens so I don't have to bend over. When I help in a kitchen with a regular stove if feels awkward use the oven. Also, I've had both of my hips replaced and I cook enough that that type of thing matters. I went low middle of the road with my appliances and am reusing some. After reading here about the temperamental nature and need for uber exhaust with the high end ranges, I didn't feel for my needs it was worth the extra money. I'm putting my money into cabinets and good mechanical / plumbing.

I posted this in the appliance forum, but I am copying here in case someone else asks: Miele, Bosch and GE Café/Monogram/Profile make a version of what you are looking for. There are some differences but they all will accomplish 95% of what you are looking for it to do...and the 5% you can probably live without! http://mieleusa.com/Product/Details/1198 That is the miele speed oven. The higher end models have full broilers and can be ordered with a trim kit to match their ovens. Their menu is the most robust with a ton of options for all of their modes, plus some step up features like a probe for cooking. You also have options on there ovens depending how much you want to spend. It has a simpler control, less deluxe feature wise but still has a broiler and solid microwave. It does less in the "speedcook" department, but if you just bake/broil or microwave its a good option. This is also easier for install, its 2 units, but they install in 1 single opening to 1 single power supply. So if one breaks you can replace it and the other will work. The drawback to that is that if the control panel fails...both units will probably not operate since its a shared control. Otherwise they do some different things. They use convection and a halogen light heating element. So it doesn't have a traditional broiler, but the halogen works well for that. There is a lot more emphasis on speed cooking, as the menu is programmed with hundreds of different items that you can speed cook. Its an established design though they GE has been selling for years. The Café will be $3-4k and the monogram will be separate components so figure more like $5-6K

I have an older 24" oven, and I've done some research in the event we have to replace it. Most of the 24" models are European brands, and certainly most with convection are European. In your price range, Fagor and Bosch are probably your best bets. Someone on the Appliance forum has a Fagor 24" oven, and there are some posts about it there. Bosch, of course, is more widely available. Neither of those will have temperature probes; for that, you would probably need to step up about $1,000 over your budget to Miele.

Unless you have a very small kitchen, it shouldn't be difficult to add an oven, later. Chances are a new homeowner will want different countertops, backsplash, maybe even cabinets...so adding a wall oven or different range could be done then. Not to mention that a new appliance color/style will probably be the 'must have' item, by then :)

The only reason we got a wall oven is because our vintage stove has a small oven in it. It isn't even 27" wide even though the stove is 37.5" wide because there is another compartment next to it.
I love our wall oven because of the roll out racks and convection feature. I'd make sure that whatever oven you do get is one that is nice. We could survive quite well with 1 oven. We have a countertop convection oven that we never used prior to the reno (frankly, I forgot we owned one) and then used in our makeshift reno kitchen. I suppose if I ever need more than what have, I could pull it out for busy times. We are having issues with approval for the propane for our vintage stove, so the wall oven has been a godsend. I have only a single burner in use, so have been cooking much more with the oven (i.e. baked french toast, grilled veggies, roasted instead of sauteed garlic, etc...). I still never need more than the one oven.

I bake a bunch for Xmas, but since I never had a second oven, know I will be fine with my new one. I love the rollout rack feature and it somehow seems roomier than my previous range's oven.

We entertain good size crowds a lot, but I try to make a lot in advance and most of our larger entertaining is in summer with the bbq going.

If you are fine without one and don't plan on moving anytime soon, then I'd skip the second one and use the money to get nicer versions of the appliances I do need. Or, be radical and just save the money (I can be such a comedienne, lol).

I have a double wall oven. I answered on the other thread. I wish I would have gotten a range or a double that was a microwave/oven in one. The original was a micro/oven combo and we already had a microwave, so we went with double ovens. I wish I had saved the counter space, because now a gigantic micro takes up a bunch of valuable real estate. If you already have space OFF the counter for a microwave, then great.
How long are you planning on staying in this house? If you'll be there longer than 5 years, I say get what YOU want-don't base your decisions off resale. In the scheme of things, an oven is small potatoes.

To answer some questions...

1. Will our lifestyle change? Probably. At the moment we only have a 21-mo old. Who knows, I may start cooking more as we have more kids or as they get older.

2. We plan on staying in this house for at least 20yrs until the kid/s move out. Of course, we may have to sell if something happens to our jobs or if we have to move.

I like the idea of dedicating a future space for a 2nd oven.

An oven is just a tiny fraction of the total cost of the house, but all the tiny stuff add up. I'd like to cut as much as I can and put that $$ on the things that I care more.

My mom put a double oven in with hungry boys in the house. She used both on many occasions, roasting something in one, casseroles in the other. After we moved out, the bottom one became a storage location for pans.

You're definitely going to find times in the future when that 2nd oven will come in handy.

I have a single 30" wall oven and an advantium 30" 240V speed oven that is a great as a microwave too. Something to consider that is a space saver.
