thanks for all the help with the kitchen. it's not done yet but this forum has been amazing.

today is a special one for me so i'm sharing in a very off-topic way. the kitchen was definitely about moving forward so maybe just a little on-topic!

ebean-Congratulations. Your post today is moving and places many things in perspective. I will spare you any personal notes except that I "helped" a dear friend through this same battle this past year and I can't wait until she meets her 5 year goal.

Hi again, Kate....I don't recall exactly which it came from many years ago....either Pickering or Hortico, but it was grafted. The funny thing is, this rose has 'self-rooted' for me a couple times, where its canes had bent down to the ground and where the cane touched the ground, it rooted. Its very low-maintenance and gets no special treatment, yet rewards me every June with amazingly beautiful and plentiful blooms. It would be a perfect rose, except it does sport some nasty thorns, so be forewarned. In spite of them, I adore this rose and its one of my favorites. I'm posting one more picture to convince you...lol. Florence, thank you for your always endearing words of support & love. My dad is doing great now. He stays with my brother now but drives to his house so he can still have his amazing vegetable garden. He is turning 87 next month and still has the most LUSH garden I have ever seen! Dad is nearly hidden when he is working in his garden. You may recall a post I did about him & his garden a couple years back....well here is a picture of him the other day in this year's garden. Thanks for asking about him. He did have a bad fall awhile back and couldn't walk for awhile, but he's walking & climbing stairs again. Good to hear from you, Carla! I have missed you. Well, DH (the problem solver) decided that I wasn't going to stand up for myself & called the CEO. He met with me & the Pres. They were not surprised. They told me that I was certainly not the first person to have problems with this woman. I told them that I had planned to talk to her first before going over her head to them. They were very nice & told me that they respected that & wouldn't get involved at this time. They said that if talking with her didn't work & the problem continued to come to them. They also told me that even if they got involved, she wouldn't change fundamentally. She wasn't included, but she knew something was going on because she was very nice to me for a couple of days. They she basically lost it in front of another employee who had come to ask me a question. She was so bad that he just stood there with an astonished look on his face. She needed some paperwork & couldn't find it & was convinced that I had it & just hadn't put it away properly. I told her that I did not have the papers in question & had not seen them. Since this was something a little out of the ordinary & a first time occurence, I would remember it. I'm pretty sure that she took care of this particular issue & the papers were likely on her desk somewhere. It wouldn't be the first time this had happened. She became very angry when I told her I didn't know where it was. They realize that this woman has friction with a lot of people. I've seen her act badly to the plant manager & one of the other VP's, but of course neither of them works for her, so they just ignore it. I had a long meeting with my boss yesterday. I told her that her treating me the way she had been bothered me & was a problem. I gave her several examples. I also told her that I needed to start working more regular hours. I told her that I certainly didn't mind working overtime when needed, but that I could not continue working until 7:30 or later every night and thru lunch. I also explained to her that I believed I was spending more time than she realized answering questions for other staff that relate to customers & trying to facilitate things from our dept. that might be holding up an order. This is not something I'm just doing extra, it's part of my job. I just don't think she realizes how much time it takes. She told me that she realized that she often came across in a bad way. She said she didn't mean to be a witch, but she knows it often sounds that way. She mentioned that this was an issue with the previous person in my job. She also said that she's come a long way from the way she used to be (now that is SCARY!). She also said that until fairly recently, she had never managed people. I feel better now that I've taken the step of talking with her so she realizes there are issues. I don't think it'll actually change things over the long term. I did work very late Tues. night, but she did at least ask if I minded. I took a long lunch on Wed. & left on time. She told me yesterday during our meeting that she wanted to meet with the entire dept. now that we had someone new. She later popped in & said that she had asked the others to meet at lunchtime & that we would order lunch in. This was not a previously scheduled meeting. I told her that DH was going out of town for a couple of days & that I had already planned to have lunch with him because of that. She said that she would have to go ahead & meet with the rest of the dept. I told her that was fine. Normally, even if I'd had lunch plans with DH, I wouldn't have minded changing them for an impromptu meeting. But with him going out of town, I didn't feel that I should cancel them yesterday. They ended up not meeting because one of the ladies didn't get asked before & she also had plans.

Hi, I've been stalking Ellen kennon for the last two weeks. I've sent her pictures of my rooms and have been emailing back and forth ever since. She has been extremely helpful and sent me swatches of what she suggested I use. I'm really excited to use her paints. She actually sends the formula to glidden prof. paint and you pick it up there. So, it should be local for you. Glidden paints now owns ici. I did see that the ici paints uses (and incidently glidden) the same manufacturer that Fine paints of europe uses. And, I've always heard good things about the ici paints. Anyhow... In my room, I have these wonky grey green couches that I can't match anything to. And, lovely brown orangy trim to boot. She recommended mushroom, her tobacco road knockoff, sage, and several others. I really want to go with the powdered pebbles, but she didn't recommend it. I just love the color. She said mushroom would work best. It is a light beigy, greyish color that I do love (not as much as that darn powdered pebbles- the perfect taupe). And, she reformulated it so it didn't have those funky pink tones. For the gallon size, it was 52 dollars in flat. Maybe 53 in satin. I spend that for regular old BM (not aura) paint. Originally, I was planning on FPE paints, which was I think 125 per gallon. I contacted FPE for help. They have a color specialist. Though emmett was helpful, Ellen was much easier to speak with and get ideas. FPE literally has thousands of colors. Ellen only has maybe 100 to 200. Easier to deal! I'm super indecisive. So, I've been collecting paints/painting for months. I was going to hire a color consultant and pay the 200 dollar fee. Until, I saw some information on EK on here. She will help you and is really nice. I think you should seriously look into her paints or at least give her a call/send her a picture. I think it was funcolors that speaks with her/did some sort of interview with her. You might search for funcolors and see what she says.

Three cheers for you! It took me blinking away the tears several times before I could finish reading your story. My mother is a breast cancer survivor; my sister did not survive hers, so my heart skipped a beat reading your success story. Happy anniversary!

ebean, congratulations! I'm a 14-year survivor, and most days don't think about the cancer any more, but I used my "close call" to make sure my overall health is as good as it possibly can be. I hope you have done and will continue to use your close call in the same way. Happy Anniversary. I look forward to reading your 25th anniversary post in 2030 (I'll be 93 then, but I fully expect to still be reading the GW Kitchens forum)!

ebean - congratulations! Happy 5th, and 10th, and 15th, and 50th. Your post brought tears to my eyes. I have a friend battling this battle now with another type of cancer. I hope she'll see her 5th and much much more too.

Sometimes we stress of the littlest things (we are all guilty of it). Look how we try to decorate the perfect kitchen, etc. It is times like this that remind me that life is so much more than the tiny details. Here's to you!

ebean - congratulations and thank you for sharing your story! My husband went through chemo and radiation treatments all summer after being diagnosed with "at least stage 3" cancer. We have a few more weeks to go before he gets a follow up PET scan and of course are praying that the cancer is gone.

I have found it cathartic to share our journey and we have received an avalanche of support. It's wonderful that you kept a blog to share your thoughts and make other women aware of how quickly this can develop. You may have saved a life by inspiring someone else to get a mammogram!

Quite a journey...So glad you're here at 5yrs and a day to share. My sis is at yr 9 or 10. My own scares have been only scares. But 'ever-vigilant' is something we all need to be. Best wishes for nothing more than periodic checks...Clean ones.

thank you to each for your good wishes and hopes. mine to each of you too in whatever crosses your path. i thought - oh...the 40 or 50 folks whose posts i see will read it - lest you think your advice and ideas aren't being really seen - that little link generated almost 265 views on my blog just today. i had no idea!

here's a fervent wish that we all enjoy our kitchens and are chatting on this blog well into our 90's! (although by then maybe the internet will be extinct and we'll be...hmmm...embedded microchips? LOL).

today was a very nice day. now if i could only pick a color for my kitchen walls, the day would be truely complete! ;)

I wouldn't begin to say I know what you've gone through. But I know I celebrate every single day of the 10 years I've had with my beloved sister since her diagnosis in June 2000. She is getting ready to send her daughter to middle school...a day she swore to me she would see when I babysat that newborn so mom could have her chemo treatments.

Congratulations and may you live long, happy years filled with joy and good health!

COOL! I only read this because I knew it had a happy ending! Cancer is in my family, too, and I am an ostrich about it. Can't help it. But to read here of so many who have been there and done that........I'm not quite so scared of it as I was a half hour ago. Thank you everyone and especially you, ebean, for starting this thread. May we all be talking kitchens into our 90th year!

Congratulations on your 5 year mark! Here's to many more 5 year celebrations and your amazing story that I know will benefit so many others experiencing the fear and frustration of the big "C". Thanks for going there and sharing it with everyone, for all of us women are truly in this fight together.

As for your kitchen color, how about a rousing touch of pink behind a cabinet or some other inconspicuous place, as a statement- 'you came and I beat you!' Only you need know it's there as a constant reminder to enjoy your kitchen and every day of your life, to the fullest!

Ebean - your doctor may not have said it, but you should be very proud of what you went through and 5 years must mean something! It sure beats not getting to 5 years!!
I wish you many more anniversaries and hope you get to the point where you vaguely remember the day because it was so long ago and you have lived so much life in the interim.

I lost a high school friend this week unexpectedly and our sons' bus driver passed this morning from being in an accident on Mon with a tanker truck on the way to picking up the kids for school. Not everyone gets a second chance, so your story is wonderful because there is no ending to it ;). The fact that you are here to share your daughter's growing up and what is to come and are also here to grow old with your husband (someday, not yet), makes me tear up some. I want to go wake the boys and give them big kisses, but will wait til morning. Dh is recovering from "minor" surgery yesterday, but it is not an easy recovery nonetheless. I am so grateful he that each day will be better and his problems were "fixed" in one shot. If he were not sleeping finally(!), I'd want to wake him too!

Congratulations on your 5 yr +1day anniversary! Your blog is amazing and I'm going to read more of it tomorrow; I hope you keep writing. I'm hoping I'll find some insight on how to help my best friend fighting a different form of C; she just finished chemo & radiation. She lives in Houston and is starting to feel up to having a visitor (I've already told her NOT to clean anything for my visit and to promise she'll tell me when she needs to rest).

I wish you many, many more anniversaries and a toast to living life fully every day!

I read a bit more. For the last ten years, I too have shipped both my girls off to the same summer camp I attended some thirty odd years ago. I love that they love it there. I felt such affinity for your message and your experience.

That was hard to get through, since I can personally relate to almost every sentence you wrote.

I remember my "5 years out" anniversary: what a wonderful triumph for you!!!! huge virtual hugs...

I am coming up on 10 years, myself, next month. I was dX at age 34 and I really didn't believe, for years, that I would see my daughter enter high school. She's a freshman this year :)

It gets easier, even though I will never be the same. I believe I have used this life lesson in a positive way: enjoying every day more and not putting off big dreams. I hope that your life, too, is richer and more meaningful despite the horrible years you've endured.

I just celebrated my 2 year survivorship and wanted to shout from the rooftops! Now, am headed back to Dana Farber next week to check "something" on the other remaining side which showed up on MRI. I am taking your inspiration with me- thanks for the great post.
