Can I seal my own countertop?

Hi Everyone,

I would appreciate any advice you may have.

I'm at the end of a major remodel. My granite kitchen countertops and vanity countertops have been installed. Kitchen granite is Virginia Mist, and bathroom countertop is carrera marble. Today, the sub told me that it would cost extra to seal the countertops - he said he didn't factor that into the original bid. Is that standard practice? It sounds odd to me.

And sealing it apparently comes with a hefty price tag - something in the order of $1,500. Is this something that I can do myself? Thank you in advance for any help you can give me.
