build my own stainless steel kitchen counter?

Any advice on how to build my own stainless steel kitchen countertop? Only need a 30"L x 28"D section to go over dishwasher in pantry. Won't get much use. I know I can order online from some specialty places -- but don't want to spend that kind of $$ for such a short piece.. Can I make my own udersupport (same as for a laminate counter)... and then have a local sheetmetal shop install the SS on it? Thanks for any/all advice!

If you're going for the look more than the functionality, I think there is some adhesive stuff that comes in rolls, like heavy-duty shelf paper, and could be stuck to a laminate surface.

Look in your yellow pages under heating for companies that make ductwork.

Most of them stock stainless and copper, and have the tools needed to cut and shape it, generally charge just a fraction of the kitchen specialty supplies.

You could do the wrap-around for the front edge yourself, but I'd at least find out what the Tin Shop would charge first. You could also do a molding of some type for the front edge, but wrapping the stainless would probably look nicer.

No reason you can't make your own support if you are comfortable with that kind of work. I'd use a marine grade plywood so it doesn't de-laminate, make just the tiniest bit smaller than the adjoining counter so that the dimensions will match once the stainless skin is on. Better that the stainless is a little lower than a little higher, since the edge may turn out a bit sharp.

Most stainless is heavy enough that you won't have to worry about the grain of the ply showing through, but try to use nice smooth wood just in case.

I'd paint the bottom and sides of the support with primer and an exterior grade latex to help prevent water damage-- cheap insurance. Wouldn't paint where the stainless will rest, may effect adheasion.

Once the support piece is as you want it, take it to the tin shop and ask them to make a skin for it. Would be wise to take it to a couple of different places since some places tend to price gouge for what they see as a needless luxury.

I'd have the skin done so that it slips on like a glove, but I'd take it home and install the support, coat with a thin layer of something like liquid nails, and slip on the skin. I don't really think you'd need anything as demanding as contact cement for this sort of application, especially if the stainless is a heavy gauge.

Please post more pics when you do more to the kitchen! Can't wait to see what tile you choose! What style/colors are you thinking? Wish I could see your floor too - or just wider angle of kitchen. Am I being too demanding?! p.s. if you're comfortable saying, what part of Portlandia? ;) We're in the Lloyd Center area (Irvington). Here's our stainless after 2 years of being beaten up (14 gauge). Our stainless countertop will *hopefully* be in in a week to two weeks. So tired of waiting! Our kitchen island has a stainless top. Due to getting a stainless counter and not wanting to be too matchy-matchy, we're replacing that stainless top w/ butcher block (and to warm the place up a bit) but my point is that the 8 or so years we've had w/ the stainless island top have been FABULOUS DAHLING. It's hard to scratch in any noticeable way (beyond the tiny light scratches which are the patina for lack of a better word) - which is to say most people don't think to just start cutting on it and they'd have to cut pretty hard I think, to hurt it - and it doesn't easily dent unless you get the cheapest option (18 gauge, I think. You want to get 14 gauge which is tougher) and it's reflective and bounces light around beautifully. It's like a chameleon - it changes appearance depending on wall and ceiling colors and lighting and time of day. If you're going for the more period look, it looks so nice w/ marble and wood. Bla bla bla...I'm always sticking out my two thumbs up re. stainless countertops...kind of a broken record here! Lol! Let's just wait and see how much I like it when it's IN!! ;)

I don't have SS in my kitchen, but I have a SS table from a restaurant supply store in my work space. Sometimes I like to leave the doors open (it's a large space with roll up doors) just to get some nice air in while I'm working. I have found that when the sun is at the right angle in the afternoon, I can't work facing it because the glare off the SS surface is harsh. I move to another side so that it's not an issue. I'm not sure what your window placement is, but in my kitchen at home I don't think SS would be an issue because I never have that much light streaming in. My kitchen windows are large and south facing, but I have a pergola and trees filtering the light. So it really depends. In direct light at my work space, SS is blinding, but I think any light polished surface would also be blinding.

I have them in my kitchen They're 9 and look as good as the day they were installed though they definitely have patina (i.e. scratches) that come from normal use. Don't know the gauge but they are quite thick. They are glued down to a very thick plywood substrate -- they were clamped for 2 days. Very low maintenance. I wipe them with Caldrea countertop cleaner and a microfiber cloth. Thing about stainless is that it can get heat tint and discolor slightly. So I put hot pots on the stovetop, sink grid or on silicone trivets. Depending on the fabricator they can do pretty much anything sinkwise. The guy who made mine is an artist and he managed to perfectly wrap the counter around an upmounted Shaw's farm sink. I had a wood counter for years and much prefer these. I never worry about them and they are so easy.
