Appliances or Granite - what s/b installed first?

Does it really matter?? Appliance and granite install will be on Wednesday - today. We requested from the appliance store a morning delivery(our contractor will install) and a late day install for granite. Granite place last Friday said that s/b fine and will look at doing 3pm granite install. So I get home this evening and notice msg on answering machine - granite install is scheduled for 9:30am and appliances will be delivered btwn 10:30-2:30. Aaaahhhh!! I HATE when things don't go as planned (esp when all other calls from granite and appliance place have been to my cell phone, and these calls were to home phone which I don't get until later in the evening when I get home from work and by that time, granite place is closed!).

So does it really matter which is installed first?? Granite place on Friday said that the range s/b installed to make sure they have a good fit for granite next to it. Do most people have appliances already installed when granite is installed? Should I just go with the flow, or should I be making calls first thing in the am to tell granite place they need to install later?? TIA for your responses - I am all decisioned-out!!

Oh Heidi. I feel your panic! I don't have a range, but a rangetop so I'm not sure if my advice would apply to you. I think so. Appliances go in after. Take some pics tomorrow to share! (My marble goes in Thursday so I know the excitement!)

Depends on your appliances but if you are talking about a stove top in the island then the granite needs to go first. However, the granite guy who is doing the cutting will need the actual sink on hand so that he can trace the outside edge for cutting if it is an under the counter installed sink. A range is not such a big deal. I guess we would need to know what type of appliances you are talking about.

Paulines, that is an interesting point and I do think that is a consideration- how the movement plays with my layout. Thanks for pointing that out. Debi2006 YES I absolutely plan to replace the hardware. I have looked a little bit at hardware and think that the darker ones and also the coppery ones look like they belong better with my kitchen - what do you think? Additionally, I am not planning to replace the appliances - they are about 7 or 8 years old and have not given any grief (uh oh here we go because I said that expect trouble:) ... but who knows down the road. I am undecided as to whether I would do the white or stainless, do you think either stone would work with either? Here, by the way is a "dry sink" which is behind the table, opposite the charming slider doors, so you can see a bit of the other colors. As you can tell, I am excited at least that I am not hearing that either one is wrong.... and that probably both would be good. I hope I am reading that correctly from the responses. Again, keep the thoughts coming.

bodica -- Definitely DO think super carefully about the placement of everything before you start, or before it's too late. I think most of us here would consider ourselves "fussy" (although I'd prefer the words "precise" and "thoughtful"), but even still, everyone makes mistakes. It's inevitable in the process. My biggest bete noir is the placement of an undercounter light switch. I so carefully thought about the placement for all the outlets and switches and I was so proud of myself! Hubris, thy name is ME because what I'd neglected to think about was where the toaster would end up living (on our countertop). I'd thought of all our other countertop appliances and the outlet placement / light switch placement is perfect everywhere else ... but where our toaster sits is right in front of a switch. It's totally picayune, admittedly, but aggravating nonetheless to have obsessed over every little detail (your "fussiness") only to have neglected the toaster. The toaster! We've tried moving it but the spot where it just makes the most sense is right in front of that farchadat light switch. In my finished kitchen description that's one thing I harped on, about if I can help anyone else with their future kitchen it's to think about where all your countertop appliances will live so as to avoid light switch fiasco like mine. (We cannot move the light switch as we have a full marble slab backsplash.) Also, I totally second your unplugging everything when not on use! We had one of those energy surveys and our particular countertop appliances don't use energy unless they're actively on -- I want to be careful in my wording because all appliances are different.

YIKES! Dkass, in light of your problem , I'm a little hesitant to even ask for an opinion about mine. I empathize with your issue...my kitchen remodel has suffered delays. This is my first kitchen remodel. The marble top was installed with the faucet holes drilled incorrectly. The fabricator will deconstruct the current top and install a new top next week. We are currently in discussion about the placement and distance of the faucet holes. As a result, I'm questioning everything to the nth degree...now, the gap bewteen the wall and slab. Here it goes...We have a .25" thick subway tile for our backsplash. This is in reference to the top that is currently in our kitchen. To minimize a wide gap between the wall and slab, the installers had to "cheat" a long run of two connected slabs closer to the wall. The results...starting from the left of the slab and ending at the right of the slab, the gap between the slab and wall gradually increases from approximately .125" to slightly more than than the thickness of the tile. There is approximately three feet where the gap is the thickness of the tile and approximately two feet where the gap is slightly thicker than the tile. The adjustment in the slab did not make a noticable change in the overhang. The fabricator used a laser system to template, so I'm surprised to see this variation. I am tiling and this is my first experience with a wall installation. I think the difference in the gap will be coverd with the tile + mortar and caulk. BUT...Is this variance in the gap between the wall and slab within the tolerances of stone top fabrication? Should I even worry about this gap? Should I consider having the fabricator come out and remeasure? Any suggestions on what to expect during tiling and/or how to make the tile cover the gap? @Tim Cleary the tile was supplied by bolic‘s distributors to the contractor . It’s the distributor he likes to use. Ironically, at the start of the project, i told him i could get white subway tile at lowes or Home Depot for cheaper than the tile he wanted me to use. His response was the dye lots are often noticeably Difft from Lowe’s and Home Depot and that working with Lowe’s and Home Depot was a nightmare. So i said ok. His wife asked me if i wanted textured, matte, or glossy and i said glossy. She brought an interceramic sample board over of glossy colors for me to choose from. I chose universal white and asked if there was a larger piece/a whole tile in universal white that i could get from Bolics to take with me to the slab yard etc. she brought me a 3x6 in glossy universal white and a 4x8 in glossy universal white. the lighting isn’t bad in the bathroom. There’s a 56” x40” west facing window above the Tile wainscoat. But i admit i didnt notice until it was grouted. grout and lights went in on the same day so i think the grout is actually what made it noticeable. The matte is matte and more gray while the glossy is a brighter white and is glossy. i’m ok with the time frame. My husband is annoyed, but it is what it is. I just feel bad that they will have to redo so much work at their expense. I wish i had noticed sooner. here it is today with no lights on. There’s plenty of light in the room. here’s a pic from today with only natural light from the windows. You can clearly see on the wall that is grouted that there’s 2 difft tiles. but You can barely tell the difference on the wall that isn’t grouted yet even though it has just as many matte/wrong tiles as the grouted wall. The grout is what made the different tiles obvious.

We are getting 36" GE Monogram range.

breezygirl - yes, excitement that I will have appliances and granite at the end of the day but also MAJOR panic last night that it's not all going to come together - that the granite will be being installed while appliances are getting delivered and the range won't be installed yet so when the granite is put in already and the range is then installed there will be gaps on the sides btwn range and granite. Sorry, I am REALLY rambling!!

tharonk - The granite place already had the template for the sink we are getting, so we are good there. Now just need to make sure contractor has the sink and faucet here since it wasn't planned until afternoon for the install!!

OK, everything went fine today. Got granite install changed to late afternoon so appliances came in the am just before noon and then granite install was later - yay!! Love, love, love the granite, but there's a small issue w/ the edge next to the range on one side is not totally straight - see pic below. Will call granite place in the am - our contractor said they can come out to grind it to even it up, but not sure I want to do that - with my luck it will end up getting damaged!!

(Yikes I see from this pic that the one recessed light shines right on the hood - ugh, I didn't even think about that(we didn't change recessed lights)!)
