Removal of existing tile backsplash, lath & Plaster

I am getting ready to remodel my kitchen and we are going to be removing the existing tile backsplash. The problem is we have Lath & Plaster walls. Our remodel is on a very small budget (just new counter tops and painting existing cabinets)and I can't afford to redo the walls also. What is the best way to remove the existing tiles without ruining the lath & plaster?

I did remove some items in our closet that were attached to the lath & plaster. When the plaster broke off I just repaired it with a filler, then sanded and painted. That worked ok for a closet but the kitchen is a bigger deal.
