Converting Barkers cabinets to have integrated flush ends

I'm just about ready to place an order for Barkers cabinets, but don't like the finished end panels they say to use and wonder if I can instead buy an end panel and substitute it for the intended cabinet side panel for an "integrated flush end" effect. I'm thinking I can use pocket screws from the top, bottom and back of the cabinet to attach the side, but wonder whether this will provide enough stability?

Specifically, I am hoping to do this for two upper cabinets 36" wide x 46.75" high x 14" deep, and one pantry composed of two cabinets (64" high x 18" wide x 24" deep and 36.75" high x 18" wide x 24" deep).

The upper cabinets each have one fully exposed side, while the pantry has lower cabinets and also 14" deep upper cabinets next to it, so that the exposed space on the pantry is relatively small (the 18" gap from countertop to upper cabinets, and the 10" gap from upper cabinet depth to counter depth).

I will have to get the end panels trimmed to do this, since Barkers makes them 14 5/8" instead of 14" deep, but once that's done, does my proposed change sound like it will provide adequate structural support? How far apart should I put the pocket screws / (so I can calculate how many to put along each edge)? Do you think I should use glue in addition to the pocket screws?

You don't do integrated finished sides on frameless. You do a full door overlay on top of the side. You would have to do a lot more than cut off a piece of cabinet. If you're going to do major reconstruction, you might as well build the cabinets yourself instead of ordering them. If you don't have confidence in your skills in building the whole cabinet, then altering them it's not a good idea at all. Just order the overlay and apply it. And don't forget to account for the extra 3/4" in the design. That's where most mess up the design.

Barkers are RTA cabinets, so there is no need to 'reconstruct' the cabinet, as I will be doing the initial construction of the cabinet myself anyways. However, I am interested in what you are saying about "You don't do integrated finished sides on frameless." Are you saying that it simply is not possible to get adequate structural integrity using pocket screws? The thing is that I really want everything to be symmetrical, and to have the look where the glass doors of the cabinets overlay the full frame around that cabinet. If I put an end panel on one side, then to get things symmetrical I'll have to put a matching panel or filler on the opposite side, plus moldings above and below, and if I do that then I don't know how to get hinges that will overlay not only the frame of the cabinet, but also the filler or panel adjacent to the cabinet, plus I think the double frame will look a little strange. Is there really no frameless option that can have the clean look of just a single frame, but with an exposed finished side?

SJhockeyfan, Your Thermador is integrated. Compare to built-ins like KitchenAid or the older style SubZero, which look like regular fridges, with doors that stick out, and breaks between doors and all, but they're built into the wall. "Integrated" is short for "flush integrated" while means that it's flush with the cabinetry. No stick out parts. I could have had my Gaggenau ovens mounted flush, but that means that they're inset so that the front is flush with the surrounding cabinets, but that also means that the door would only open to 90 degrees, like what happens on most full overlay cabinetry. I say most because if that makes you nuts, like it does me, you can buy staged hinges that allow for a much wider swing. The Thermador fridge has similar hinges, so the door isn't limited to 90ÃÂ°. Some integrated fridges don't have that great feature. JPLouis, You might talk to Haefele and be sure that their similar pulls have been used successfully, long term, with refrigerators. It's pulling against the seal that takes oomph, and could wear down the joining over time, but there has to be a way to make it work, and they might know what it is.

The exposed control panels I find a little easier to use, and they sometimes give info about where the dishwasher is in the cycle (useful if you want to know if it's almost done, or if you want to add a forgotten item early in the wash cycle). OTOH, the cabinet door panels vary in size from one manufacturer to another, and if *this* dishwasher fails you may be limited in what you can replace it with if you want to keep the cabinet panel. Sometime the exposed control panels are 6" tall (matching most U.S. cabinet drawers), others just 4" or other sizes. Miele makes some filler panels to adapt cabinet panels that are too short, but short of sawing off part of it (often not a feasible option) there's nothing that can be done if your new DW has a larger exposed control panel than your old one. Some fully-integrated DWs do have a light or other indicator to show it's on, either pointing downward at the floor, or upward making the small gap above the DW and below the countertop glow. Using a fully-integrated DW also means using your own cabinet pulls. You'll need a fairly large, sturdy, easy to grasp one for your dishwasher. If all your other cabinets have small round knobs, you'll either ruin the intended hiddenness with a big handle on the DW or have to grasp and pull hard on a small knob or handle (which I wouldn't recommend - it may break off over time). Integrated DWs with exposed control panels have the manufacturer's usual door latch which usually is easy to use. Obviously there's an aesthetic difference between the two. Most (all?) of us have exposed ovens, so I don't really see the point of hiding the dishwasher unless it really blows the symmetry or something. The low height of the open door has nothing to do with whether it's standard/integrated/semi-integrated, but rather is a result of the move to "tall tub" dishwashers with doors that open all the way down to the toekick, rather than 3/4 of the way down with a stationary access panel between the door and the toekick. The door on those old dishwashers didn't open as low as on the new ones, since the pivot point and thus the entire open door was 6 to 8 inches higher. Nowadays, only low-end dishwashers still use that design, which substantially reduces capacity. Whatever happened to top-load dishwashers? They were really easy to close, although harder to load. The drawer-type dishwashers are perhaps easiest to use, and the Fisher & Paykel drawers are shallow enough so the fully-integrated DW won't stick out in front - and unlike other brands, they have a few controls on a small plate that mounts near the top corner of the cabinet panel, available in different colors. I think GE/Monogram had a fully-integrated dishwasher that had a small panel that fit in a rectangular hole cut near the top of the full cabinet panel, not sure if they (or anyone else) still offers this.

Doing a fridge/freezer combo shouldn’t be any more complicated than doing all fridge/all freezer columns. In any case, it’s a bit of a hassle to deal with at this point, but it will be worth it in the end. If you don’t care for the builtin look, I guarantee it will bug you after it’s installed. It’s a completely different look. You will be kicking yourself and wishing you had taken the little bit of extra time and effort to find and work with another cabinet company.

It is so funny I keep finding your houzz post as well as your blog post about the fridge from 2 years ago and still both are the best source of info. This fridge topic is so complex and i am set on this true frameless build in/integrated look you have achieved! congrats. Thank you for confirming I don't need the cabinet enclosure for the fridge. Your kitchen looks FANTASTIC! and i love the minimalist look. If you don't mind i have a question or two based on your choices and experience. I am trying to finalize all my choices (or at least the most important ones) before ordering my kitchen cabinets, i also don't have KD so have educated myself real well but still have few things i am trying to nail down on and avoid potential mistakes. 1. I love your choice of fridge finger pulls. that was my original choice but everywhere i read that you need good gripping power to pull the cabinet. what's your take? are you happy with the finger pulls or you would choose differently now? 2. i see your installation is all flush. my kitchen will be similar in the layout , all on one wall, with the center cavity for the gas cooktop and 2 uppers. My fridge however will be right next to the counter. Will add a tall panel to its side as well as filler before the panel on my uppers to live space for hardware. I think you counter is sticking out a bit? I have an option to do a 25" deep tall cabinets or position them an inch off the back wall. What's your opinion on the counter. OK to stick out or better to make the tall cabinets/fridge flush with counter? 3. Last one is on your exhaust hood. I am set on strong CFM power ( either 900 or 1200 CFM with external blower for noise reduction) but my enclosed hood pops out to 24 inches . What is the hood you chose? I love the all same depth look on the uppers ? What height are all your uppers installed that they all are same level to meet the min height of hood requirement. Alternatively, if that's really not possible, having a face frame on these would not be the end of the world - at least it would be symmetrical and not a doubled edge - but I can't seem to find full overlay hinges for glass doors for a face frame cabinet. These are not regular doors with glass inserts, but rather doors that are fully composed of glass.

Have you considered gluing on a veneer?

Yes, but not having done it before, didn't know how successful it would be applying veneer to a whole sheet, plus a little nervous about the veneer's heat activation since it will be over the stove -.I know I can do edgebanding with an iron, but do you think I can be successful with a veneer sheet in a very visible place and that it will not start to peel even if home-applied when it's just by the stove?

I would think it would be ok--after all we're talking about wood here, so in the first place it shouldn't be where it might get too hot.

Check the various adhesives and see what the spec'd temps are--over a stove I'd think you'd want maybe 250-300 degrees or better. Since it's a veneer without much weight, you'd probably still be ok if you exceed the rating a little bit, since adhesives don't fail immediately when they go over their rated temp--it just that their holding power will decrease.

And if the adhesive fails, you should still be able to fix it with the same or a different one (assuming the veneer isn't scorched--and if it is, then the holding power of the adhesive isn't your problem).

Why not ask Barkers? they ought to know the strengths of what you are proposing...it depends on how that end panel is constructed. not sure I'd use pocket screws for load-bearing--OTOH, couldn't you just drill dowel holes or whatever it is Barker usually uses to attach the normal cabinet side?

Ooo... didn't think of doing dowels! I'm thinking I could use those PLUS pocket screws (PLUS glue??) and the result could be pretty solid! I unfortunately can't do what Barkers usually does because they screw straight through the side of the cabinet so that the screws are visible, (They don't have integrated ends that are designed to be visible, only end panels). But dowels plus pocket screws sounds pretty solid to me - do you agree?

It's also good to know that the veneer would probably be okay over the stove. I'm not seeing temperature specs on the ones online, but I'll ask around if it starts to seem like the dowels/pocket screws strategy won't work.

Thank you very much for your input! Having both of these strategies available gives me enough comfort that it will be possible that I'm going to go ahead and order the cabinet - wish me luck making it work!
