drawer style microwave in island?
Comments (16)We have our microwave in the island. We considered a drawer microwave but they were very new when we did the remodel 6 years ago - the 24" model was just becoming available. Also, I have short arms and was concerned about the cleaning issue. I didn't like the trim on the ones available at the time. Instead we went with a KitchenAid with a drop down door. I've put the link to the current similar model below. It has the controls on top and a knob which makes it simpler to use from above than side controls and a keypad. Of course one still has to stoop to put something in and take it out, but I don't find that any worse than using my bottom oven. If we were making the decision today, we might choose a drawer microwave now that they have been around for longer because of being slightly more convenient to load and stir even if it would be hard for me to clean. But we are happy with what we have. The performance of the KitchenAid in evenness of heating and such is great. I like the meal reheat button which does fine job on reheating leftovers. Here is a link that might be useful: KitchenAid with drop down door....See MoreAnyone gotten rid of a stand mixer?
Comments (89)Linelle, Thx! I will try the extra long mixing. I also chill my dough when I have time. My grandmother (96 and still making cookies) told me to use extra flour which also helps with the spreading. I watch my cookies like a hawk and take them out right before they look done :) I love the dough and the cookies! I have a gray KA mixer that I love but now that it's on my new counter, in my new kitchen, I really, really, really, want a pretty color!!! Oh but the guilt in getting something new when what I have works just fine.... hatethecold- I am stealing your screen name :)...See Moremicrowave in island design
Comments (18)mamarachel, I think we are both to blame. Last time we met, we talked about what was needed for the island. I later sent her all the dimensions and pics of inspiration islands (except for dimensions for the one shelf that micro and KA will go on, but she did know we were doing a micro on a shelf). We agreed it needed to be ordered before she left to meet our timeline and that she would email the drawings before she left. I'm to blame because I should have sent her reminders when I didn't get the drawings. Also, this isn't my kitchen designer. This is a person I'm paying a huge amount of cash to basically hold my hand thru the whole rebuild process. My DH and I made the decision to put a huge fraction of our budget towards paying her because she has been thru this process with many clients and knows the process and steps (this was not a planned project so we are doing our best, but the learning curve is high). And, I'm not really mad, I'm just a bit frustrated. She's been amazing to date and I know she was frazzled getting us and other clients ready so she could take her holidays. I know it will all work out, I'm just feeling a bit set a float on my own as our contractor is also away for the same few weeks. They've both been amazing to work with, I'm just feeling the stress. I'll try to get to the appliance store today with my island drawings and see if a drawer will work and actual cost. Budget is becoming more and more of a fairy tale that kind of exists somewhere, but I don't really believe in anymore. I really do love that pic of the micro on the shelf in the English kitchen that Sherri posted (love the whole kitchen actually)....See MoreHow much space to plan for stand mixer?
Comments (19)Buy a 25# bag of flour and carry it. I lift weights. MUCH heavier than 25# during my workouts. But I will say that there is something about the weight distribution and way you have to handle the KA mixer that makes it clumsy to carry, imho. I wouldn't want to do it regularly. As someone who is starting to get senior discounts, at those places with a slightly lower starting age for seniors, LOL, I also try to plan for a time when I may not be able to easily lift something like that. Of course, the importance of this depends on your age and whether you consider this your forever home. But what if you injure yourself and are using crutches or a walker during healing and have a sudden urge for chocolate chip cookies? Yikes! I wonder if your pantry should be built with a roll-out cart that the mixer sits on? That way you can use it next to the pantry or roll it to the middle area, where your stool is drawn now, and use it there?...See Morelocaleater
