Old Ann Sacks post,,,,,,,,,missing

New quandry. The original Ann Sacks tile that I am so in love with is way out of my price range even at the best price I could get. SO.......I looked around and found a couple of others that I like a LOT. The problem? Do I want to look farm or city?

I was willing to sell my first born for this but it was even more than that.

So I looked around and found this one

But I got confused (it happens ALL the time) and either didn't notice the one like it with the dark tile in it or who knows. Probably was doing 20 other things at the same time and didn't even notice.

So I printed both of them off on 6 sheets and taped them to opposite walls in the kitchen. Like the one with the darker tiles in it best.

And then I got an answering email that I evidently had filled in the blanks on someone's web site and found these!!

Now the thing is....my kitchen wasn't intended to be an Ann Sacks kind of kitchen.

So could I get away with the peachy funny shaped tile? Or the yellow toned one like it?

Are any of the browns in the peachy "fish" shaped tile smilar to the browns of your cabinets? Is the white in the tile as white or nearly as white as your applicances? If so, I think you could not only "get away with " it, that tile would look fabulous. If the browns are much lighter in tone and the whites are much more off-white, it's a tougher call. Can you get a sample...and put it in your kitchen?
I would not be inclined to do the yellow....seems to me to introduce a whole different color family, though if you repeated yellow elsewhere with accessories, chair seats, etc, it would work. Not in my mind as well as one of the tiles with the brown in it though. If the peachy fish doesn't work, I personally like the third set of tiles a lot too...FWIW.

Pinch, I figure you've posted again because you know perfectly well that none of these tiles "go" in your kitchen.

What I'm not sure of is why you should care?

The Anne Sacks one would look the worst on the matching the kitchen scale. The mosaics would look the best. The lighter one of the fishes would be the least distracting, but they don't exactly cry "Chuck chuck sooie" or any such honest farm thing.

I like the netted square with the darks in it too. It seems very "you". When you put it up, you should pull some of the edge pieces off so the edges of the squares aren't apparent.

A plain grid pattern would look much more appropriate. But who wants to be appropriate? Go for the fishes!

matoad: my parents let me shift from the passenger seat all the time...probably why I am such a good driver with a standard! but we didn't have a push button ignition...we had an old VW square back that could be started with the tiniest of pushes from behind. DigitS: My finger print, of course!! Not a worry these days with all that digital technology around. And T.V.! Yeah, we had a tiny box of black and white with "13" channels only not all the channels were there. We only got to watch a very small amount: Star Trek, and any of the programs on PBS, like Nova, In Search Of, that yoga guy, I forget his name, and Sesame Street. I used to get pissy when my mom was watching ... was it Dick Cavet or Merv Griffin? Either way, one of those was on at the same time as Felix the cat...so sad. Funny, I haven't had a T.V. in about ten years but I netflix (on my computer) all the old Star Treks and also that Star Trek Deep Space 9! My brother and I stayed with our grandparents every weekend and they would take us to garage sales. My gram never paid more than a nickel or, sometimes--rarely, a dime for stuff. That is when she would remind me that movies used to cost a nickel. When the prices rose and she could only get away with paying a quarter at rummage sales, she decided they were too pricey! We went to the drug store for ice cream. While gram bought prescriptions, grampa would buy us ice cream for a few cents. Gosh, I think it was 25 cents a cone, for three scoops?? It was cheap. Grampa always got strawberry, I got chocolate and I don't remember what my brother got. My bro and I used to make model cars, rockets and monsters, like Lon Chaney as this or that monster. We would blow up the models with firecrackers and then display them on our shelves. I saw lots of the models we had, un-blown up, on eBay for a zillion dollars. Oops! We had our friends over yesterday (oooh, that is so in the past) and I used the relish tray that I found in grannies attic. It was brand new and pink speckle from...gee, must have been the late fifties. The box it was in was disintegrating, falling apart. In junior high school, I wore clothes from grannies closet, I would fix them up so they would fit as gram was a pretty big gal. All the kids were curious as to why I had such neat clothes. gosh, I loved reading what everyone wrote! J.

When I walked my kids around, I would put out a bowl and a cute little sign saying to take 1 or 2, or whatever. They did! Except one year, we were on our way out when I heard some boys take the whole bowl. I flew out the door, they stopped short of the end of the walkway and sheepishly put it back. I was especially surprised because we KNOW them! My sons quit going out after 8th grade, but this year DS wanted to dress up as a ghoul and have a "haunted porch", I think he missed the TorT! Sadly, it was not only cold and windy, but there was a young-kids party nearby and he looked too scary, so I had him hold off till the older kids came 'round. But by then it was misty, too, so the goblins stayed in. I I don't mind the older kids, as long as they dress up with at least a bit of effort or creativity and SAY Trick or Treat! We had two dancers about 14yrs, very sparkly. When I admired them, they said they had a dance too. It was cute, definitely earned them extra treats!

Grout does not have to get disgusting! Mine isn't and never has been! I have had tile countertops all my life and they clean up just fine. My beautiful artisan tile countertops (complete with trim, but costing more than stone) in my new kitchen clean up just fine. One does have to actually clean up after oneself, though... Tile is a wonderfully functional and easy on the planet choice. Route66Services, I agree that 4"x4" tiles are a more retro look than 6"x6", but either will be fine. Another traditional look is to have contrasting trimwork. That part comes from the fact that stores only tended to stock a few colors. The "8 week backorder" that LWO referred to regarding trim pieces is actually a "we have to make those up for you and it's going to take a little while" thing. Don't let it sway you. Just plan ahead, and give yourself some leeway because tile companies over promise on delivery dates. If the tiles don't pass inspection, they have to start all over again. And sometimes, they have to wait a month to finish a big run before making your tiles. This is the big boys. It's the same with the artisans, but they're more forthcoming with the time frame. Most of all, however, it's important that you get a really good tile setter who knows how to do countertops. You can't just glue the tiles to the underlayment with thinset the way some people do with backsplashes. The best backing is an old fashioned mortar bed, though there are some backerboards that I think are appropriate for counters. Done right, with wet mortar, also takes time, because it has to cure. But it's worth it. I have a feeling a lot of the horror stories about tile come from people whose tile wasn't set correctly. BTW, good quality tile made from good quality bisque, set correctly, is very hard to break, and shouldn't do so just from random stuff falling on it. It should take the equivalent of a sledge hammer in full swing. Even that might not break it on first try. If you're interested in going artisan, I can recommend Architerra-NW. Gorgeous tile, amazingly good bisque, and all the trims you could ever want. Daltile, however, is mass produced (i.e., faster) and their plain, glossy tiles should give you that retro look you want.

A DISCOVERY OF WITCHES by Deborah Harkness I tried to begin this book last year and didn't like the idea of vampires.....however after reading the reviews on her trilogy I gave it another try and am enjoying it. I'm not a lover of vampire stories at all and have to admit that I skipped the sections describing how he kills the stag . But the general story line is interesting. I like the light sideways bowling pins best...followed by the darker ones you taped up.
Any thoughts on wall paint or does white stay?

I really, really like the orange fish but looking at my kitchen pictures, yes, the mosiac with the dark tiles would be the best. Too bad I didn't see all those two months ago. I would have had a to die for bathroom.
And too, there's always white subways. Or white paint. Or free hand brown paint. Wanna bet there is no backsplash yet next year at this time? I've had a chunk of wallpaper taped there since March. Talk about indecision! I knew I must be good at something. I think indecision might be it!

That first pic could easily be done with stencils and faux paint....

Order 1 sheet and use the tiles as a template.

Take a pic of or email yourself a pattern you love (Ann Sacks perhaps?) Make a transparency of it. Get one of those projectors and project the pattern on your wall. Trace it... then paint away or get creative with mosaics, crushed glassy stuff. little pebbles... whatever!
