I'd look into a new faucet that would reach. They should pick up the expense, of course.
Did the installer ask anyone where to put it or just decide on his own? I can't imagine an installer not bothering to find out. Mine worked with me to finagle the best possible spot for the sink and faucet. We did not need a hole for the work faucet (wall mount on back of sink) but we needed one for the filtered water faucet. The installer in our bathroom made sure to ask as well.

He's right , and the $$$ is not your concern unless you specifically specified that the hole should be 6" from the edge.

This is poor advice ! The amount of material eaten away by the kerf of a diamond holesaw is significant. It's at least 1/8", more if the fella has a wiggly hand. That amount of filler/epoxy is gonna show to anyone that has decent eyesite. Additionally the white color filler is going to yellow from UV exposure.

Ohhh, that's so upsetting. I'm so sorry, this really sounds like something that would happen to me. The faucets can be really expensive it seems a toss up as to which way to go. I suppose getting a different faucet would be the simplest way but then you have two faucets and maybe not the one you want. The other thing is they always seem to mess something else up when tearing things out so that is a concern if they take out the counter top and if it would match perfectly being a different piece. So sorry. I feel for you.

They screwed up - they should fix it at their cost.

Consider the ergonomics of reaching an additional 3" to the faucet before you accept this mistake. The extra reach could cause problems for your back or shoulders over time.

You didn't make this mistake and you should not have to live with it. Counter installers should know to check the faucet first. I've had counters installed in two houses recently and they all knew to put the faucet in the right place.

I can't imagine why anyone would drill the faucet hole so far from the sink unless it was specifically asked for because the customer wanted to use a humongous faucet. They made a mistake and should cover what it takes to repair properly even if it requires replacing the counter, but it would be nice if you could work out something that costs them less than that.

Is the faucet 6" from the side of the sink. Did you plan to have an air switch for a disposer? If you don't have a hole for an air switch already, perhaps that hole can be used for the air switch and a new one can be drilled for the faucet. I think that the only way to fill a faucet hole and make it look right is if you have something else you want to put in the hole such as an air switch.

How about a different sink that is deeper front to back? He would pay for the new sink and fab required to uninstall the old and install new.

I can't imagine a kitchen with so much free space behind the sink.

Yep--they should be apologizing to you and scheduling a new countertop, not asking you to live with it, or to invent some way to fix it.

A few years ago I saw an idea in one of the major mags (Traditional Home, maybe?) that might work if you don't want to re-do the counters. There was a fabulous kitchen with a unique old piece of furniture made into an island, quilted stainless refrigerators, and gorgeous marble counters. If I remember the story correctly, the counters had developed a long crack behind the sink, so the fabricator took a long narrow piece of the same marble and created a faucet deck with an ogee edge, and installed it on top of the cracked section. It looked like a design element, not a fix. If you did that, you could move the hole closer.

Wow yall are very caring people here. =) Thanks for all the advice and support. Turns out they ended up plugging it and it looks fantastic. Countertop guy was very skilled, he spent an hour making a cone-oval plug that matched the hole exactly and fell in with about 1/32 sticking up. Then he epoxied it down, let it set, and polished to the countertop height. Epoxy is visible if you put your nose up to it; it is about a hair wide. He also moved the soap dispenser hole an inch closer. I think this was only possible because we have a solid color countertop.
