How much dust when faucet hole drilled on-site?

Our quartz should be installed in 10-14 days, and the faucet hole will be drilled on-site (so they tell me). I'm wondering how horrific of a mess this is going to make, as I'd like to go ahead and start putting some things back in the drawers Has anyone had some finishing completed on site?

It goes quickly and most of the dust drops into the cabinet below.

It should be okay to put stuff in drawers away from the sink area.

They should have someone with a shop vacuum hose alongside the drilling to keep the dust cleaned up. It's not a big mess in itself as a result. However, they won't drill into the plywood (if you have it underneath) for plumbing - that's left for the plumber, and that will be very messy underneath, especially if they have to countersink the hole in thick plywood.

Also, the countertops, they will need access under the cabinets, especially where the slab seems and edges will be located to adjust the height using screws, so anything placed here will get knocked over or impede them in leveling the slabs.

I think you are okay with closed drawers that are away from these areas.

The holes for my bathroom, laundry room, and kitchen faucets were drilled at the fabricators shop. When they came to the house to measure and template we discussed exactly where we wanted the holes to be placed for the faucets, soap dispenser, and the air switch in the kitchen. I did not have those items in my possession at the time. I did tell them what faucets I was using. I had my sink but they did not take it or the paper template with them. They said they would get all the needed specs. on line from the manufacturer. The fabricator I used was completely high tech and used computerized measuring and cutting systems for the process. All cutting was done at the shop and everything fit perfectly. The sinks where installed in my home by the fabricators and then hooked up by the plumber.

I can't imagine why anyone would drill the faucet hole so far from the sink unless it was specifically asked for because the customer wanted to use a humongous faucet. They made a mistake and should cover what it takes to repair properly even if it requires replacing the counter, but it would be nice if you could work out something that costs them less than that. Is the faucet 6" from the side of the sink. Did you plan to have an air switch for a disposer? If you don't have a hole for an air switch already, perhaps that hole can be used for the air switch and a new one can be drilled for the faucet. I think that the only way to fill a faucet hole and make it look right is if you have something else you want to put in the hole such as an air switch.

Good you remembered about cutting out the plywood underneath where the holes will be in stone, Sylvia. Your plumber will thank you!!! Faucet on 1-3/4 sink is placed centered directly above the bowls bridge divider. Soap dispenser is wherever you want, but make sure it can reach/pour into sink. Air gap (most of CA requires one) on same side where your dishwasher is is best. (I put mine in between faucet and soap dispenser.) Spacing of my 3 holes is not equal, with air gap and dispenser closer together than space from faucet to airgap. Distance of holes from edge of stone = your installers will know where to. Sink to counter front edge distance is usually 3-1/2 to 4 inches. Won't your sink opening in granite be already cut out at fab shop? Hope so - less mess and a nice finished/polished edge assured. (They cut sink cutout in plywood using in-place granite slab as pattern, then remove slab again.) Good luck to you tomorrow.

Thanks everyone. Not sure what's going to happen, but removing the trap pull and installing a pop up drain seems like it could be a solution vs. ripping it out and starting over. I would prefer a redo, of course, but we shall see how it works out. @Sophie, I chose the sinks and faucets. The counter tops are Ceasarstone - all custom. I showed the counter top guy EVERYTHING on his first visit to take measurements - he even took a sink with him and I asked twice if he needed a faucet too, which he did not take with him. The sink's flange is super skinny width and should have had negligible influence on faucet placement. I agree the sink is too far back from the edge - looks to me like he centered it to the slab. No idea what drove the placement of the faucet. Since he fabricated the matching back splash too, one would think he would have taken those dimensions into account. My mistake was assuming there were standards for sink distance from the edge, faucet distance from sink, etc. and I'm learning that's not how it works. I shared on FB too and am surprised at how many people are living with this issue - faucet so close to the wall that it just barely functions and it's impossible to clean behind. I don't aim to sound snarky or marginalize the skills needed to craft a counter top but holy cats the ONLY MAJOR JOB they have after getting the dimensions right, is putting the sink and faucet holes in the right place. Apparently, if you don't specify the layout of said sink and faucet holes, you're at the mercy of the counter top installer. I just don't understand why so many installers refuse to communicate and simply discuss layout with totally clueless homeowners like me when they show up to measure. Seems like this is a design mistake that could easily be avoided with some helpful input on the front end from the professional craftsmen doing the job - or maybe I'm missing something?

We had our counters adjusted on site to make them flush against the wall and on the ends an adjustment so the range and fridge would set flush with the cabinets, also we had the faucet holes drilled. We had them do this in the garage and everything out there was coated with dust, I would advise covering everything up with a cheap plastic paint drop cloth.

Ask the installer what they plan to do about dust. Drilling the holes isn't all that messy. My installers had a shop vac and a blower to pull all of the dust outside. They cut my cook-top opening on site. Due to the fragile nature of my granite, it was safer to cut this hole once the granite was installed. It could have been very messy, but there was hardly any dust in the kitchen at all, other than in the cook-top's cabinet.

The house is an open-plan MCM, so there is no covering up that can really be done. It will just be dusty -- that's why I've put off a good cleaning so far.

I'm hoping they can lay things in place for a dry fit, but do the tweaking in the carport, which is only a few steps away.

I think I'll go ahead and get all the drawers assembled (IKEA) and in place, but I won't put anything in the top drawers. That way they can be pulled out for easy access.

Is there some reason they can't drill the holes before they come? As long as you have your faucet picked out and know where you want the holes, they should be able to do it that way. I'd press them on it.

They drilled our faucet hole in the granite in our garage. No dust in the house. They were very good about clean up in the garage. Before they came out for the install, the shop had my sink and faucet.

Our faucet hole was drilled after installation. The fabricator had this suction ring thing he put on there, with some water (?) in it if I recall correctly. Then he drilled inside that, it was not very messy at all (certainly less messy than doing the seams, lol).
