There is no code restriction for that.

Not an issue for code, and looks only a skosh past ''normal''. Put an actual tape on it. If anything, the sinks are a bit too far back, pushing the faucets back that skosh.

Who chose the sinks? How big is the flange? Is this a fabricated ''custom'' top from a box store? Or were the holes drilled on site or in the shop? If in a shop, did they have the faucets at the shop?

That's a pretty big skosh. I'll bet there is 4" from the front edge to the sink cut out and that could be 3" easily. That gained inch could have gone behind the faucet. The faucet couldn't be drilled much closer to the sink.

It was probably perfectly placed until the backsplash went in. I don't see a code violation there....

You can replace the faucet with a center set pop up which does not come out of the rear.

Thanks everyone. Not sure what's going to happen, but removing the trap pull and installing a pop up drain seems like it could be a solution vs. ripping it out and starting over. I would prefer a redo, of course, but we shall see how it works out.

@Sophie, I chose the sinks and faucets. The counter tops are Ceasarstone - all custom. I showed the counter top guy EVERYTHING on his first visit to take measurements - he even took a sink with him and I asked twice if he needed a faucet too, which he did not take with him. The sink's flange is super skinny width and should have had negligible influence on faucet placement.

I agree the sink is too far back from the edge - looks to me like he centered it to the slab. No idea what drove the placement of the faucet. Since he fabricated the matching back splash too, one would think he would have taken those dimensions into account.

My mistake was assuming there were standards for sink distance from the edge, faucet distance from sink, etc. and I'm learning that's not how it works. I shared on FB too and am surprised at how many people are living with this issue - faucet so close to the wall that it just barely functions and it's impossible to clean behind.

I don't aim to sound snarky or marginalize the skills needed to craft a counter top but holy cats the ONLY MAJOR JOB they have after getting the dimensions right, is putting the sink and faucet holes in the right place.

Apparently, if you don't specify the layout of said sink and faucet holes, you're at the mercy of the counter top installer. I just don't understand why so many installers refuse to communicate and simply discuss layout with totally clueless homeowners like me when they show up to measure.

Seems like this is a design mistake that could easily be avoided with some helpful input on the front end from the professional craftsmen doing the job - or maybe I'm missing something?

Some people go to work everyday. They put in their time, do their assigned tasks, then go home.

Some people embrace their profession. They involve themselves in continuing education, they read up on updated materials and methods, they review what their peers are doing and accept their peers methods if they find them superior to their own. They want their customer to have the best possible experience with the best possible outcome.

Often times it's faster and less expensive to take the time to ask questions up front and discuss the outcome up front so the customer knows what they are getting and why they are getting it, rather than just "doing the job" and dealing with questions, second-guessing, and potential customer disappointment after the job is done.

Ends up the sinks are too big. What you see is deceiving; there was no room to move the sink farther forward. A square or smaller sink would have made all the difference.

I wasn't married to that sink style, could have easily chosen another, smaller one in a heart beat if only someone would have told me sinks come in different sizes - and every modicum matters. The Home Depot stocks two styles of round sinks and I chose the biggest one just because I liked its shape more.

If someone would have talked about layout and placement when we were standing there in the bathroom opening the sink box looking for a template, I could have chosen to change the sink to the smaller size.

What's super unfortunate is the fabricator was kind of proud of himself for getting everything perfectly square and beautifully centered fitting the sink and faucet in as well as he did - he's thinking "job well done, I got that sink in there for her and it looks great!" And then when I saw it, I crapped all over it because the faucet ended up too close to the wall.

Communication is important. Lesson learned. It's fine, I can make it work. It's not my idea of perfect but it will be okay. I will certainly take this experience and apply it to my own business working with clients. #noregrets

Well, who did the actual design work for this project? Did you use a designer?

I can tell from the picture that sink can come forward about an inch. I've routed through cabinet rails to get sink flanges to fit.

@Joseph, I'm sure you're right but it woulda been a lot easier just to choose a smaller sink. lol! Wasn't in love with that sink for any reason. It was roundish. It was the one they had 3 of in stock - good enough.

@Sophie, no designer. All I wanted was to replace the ugly one piece formed plastic things that were there. A new sink, counter and faucet. Just wanted a clean, new shiny place to hang me toothbrush.

I did quartz in my MB a while back and acted as the "designer" and no one ever got into the fine details of sink placement or faucet placement. I guess I got lucky things worked out.

I can't even imagine if someone would have asked me where to position the sink. I would have told them it's their job to figure that crap out. I barely know the little lines on the ruler. I guess I would have told them to look at the cabinet below and make sure the holes are center with the doors (but I didn't even have to say this, they already knew - common sense I suppose)...

Sophie is a bigwig... so I imagine her designs had contracts that lawyers had to review so it's easy for her to ask such questions. But for us normal folks it doesn't always work this way.

@FeatherBee it all worked out. After living with my humongo sinks for a few days, there is a silver lining.

The silver lining is no more puddles on the counter tops! OMG the difference is remarkable.

My boys are tall and these vanities are lower in height. Tall boys + lower vanities = constant wiping up; keeping water in the sink has been a challenge since day one in this condo. If we were going to live here long-term, I would have replaced the vanities with a taller height, but we're not and what we have is fine for a some-day rental.

To deal with the faucet being so close to the wall we are going to go the pop up drain route and 86 the mirror frame band-aid, bite the bullet and spend a little more to replace the mirrors.

I just came back from meeting with my cabinet person and he made an interesting comment. If one has the room to do so, he suggested using kitchen cabinets with are 24 inches deep, or if using 21 inch deep bathroom cabinet/vanity, installing them 3 inches out from the wall which will provide more depth of the counter top for the larger sinks and the faucets. If there is an open end not abutting a wall, you will need a filler board on the open side though. If an open back vanity cabinet, you might want to back it also so things do not fall behind in that space.

Sometimes the holes are big enough that the faucet can be loosened and pulled forward a little. Might be able to gain 1/2 inch or so.
