calling tnhillbillytoo... about your bead board ceiling

Can others please kindly do not reply until tnhillbillytoo hopefully sees this post? I learned that the post will stay on top longer if there is no reply. Hope this request is not offensive and your input on the subject will be greatly appreciated once the post is open to discussion.

Hi tnhillbillytoo, I'm intrigued by the bead board ceiling you guys DIY'ed shown in your thread - Soapstone is IN - midway kitchen reveal. Can you share more details on it?

1) brand and vendor

2) ease of installation

3) durability and aesthetics (any cracking developed?)

4) ease of maintenance (heard beadboard ceiling in kitchen hard to keep clean)

We have a room enclosed with dark knotty pine planks (see my earlier thread for a photo). The ceiling is too dark. However, I do not want to remove the planks because it will just involve way too much work (very tight attic, lots of roofing dust, code requirements, etc). My DH would not consider wallpaper. I need to find some ceiling material that can go right on top of (actually beneath) the existing plank ceiling.

Too bad that tnhillbilly did not reply. I'm turning the question to the creative crowd on the forum -- any good suggestions to lighten up our ceiling in an affordable way (in both $$ and time) for DIY'ers?

I've read about whitewashing/painting, but sanding a ceiling just sounds neck breaking (and dirty).

I'm leaning towards covering it up, esp. if the material can cover up the holes I'm thinking about cutting for installing more lights (like what tnhillbillytoo did). So far, the ceiling planks we looked at (and liked) are Armstrong planks that need to installed on joists or furring strips. What else can I use that can go over wood planks and still look decent?

The dark ceiling...(we will install lighter colored floor too)

boy, when I saw that your post had a reply, I too was sure hoping it was tnhillbilly! I posted on her "in progress" thread asking about the BB ceiling but alas no answer (I'm sure they're still working towards "finished"!).

FWIW there are two PVC BB ceiling online options that I've found. One is Azek (azek.com) and the other is AIC. I've only looked at the websites so far; not quite decided to go beadboard or not so haven't called with questions. The AIC seems quite thin which is good for our application (already low 7'4" bathroom ceiling) but I have no real world experience with either product. Will post if/when I do!

sheesharee - Thanks for the offer but I called Home depot and they have some paintable wallpaper in stock that is puffy, so i can get the idea. Also, Southerns website showed a good photo of the product before painted. igloochic - My kitchen needs to be lightened up, so the stained look would not be for me. I think your idea would work, though. That would be a neat and different project for someone to take on. A study, maybe? :) Thanks lyban! I am bored...that's why! lol No, I just thought it would add a little texture to the space, that's all. All this hype on the paintable beadboard projects sparked my interest. I, so far, have not had to clean the backsplash in my kitchen. I guess I am a neat cooker. Even the mirror stays clean for the most part. The other area doesn't even get food near it unless I am serving a buffet. tinam61 - We don't have any wallpaper either, and I swore I would never have it again! lol However, I don't have the tools or the know-how to cut the wood. The wallpaper seems like an easier project.

Hi Jeri, I am in the tail end of a mini remodel of my kitchen. Nothing fancy really, just counters, kept the cabs but rearranged a tiny bit, new appliances and details. Still working on the details. Lighting, molding... Looking at a modernaire hood but worried about the expense. I try to list each photo source next to the photo I post. I use magazine, web sites, blogs... Thanks for asking. I love beadboard. I do think Sophie has a valid point about competing lines ,to me if you did the backsplash differently it may not be a problem. One thing to keep in mind is that light painted surfaces shows lots of dirt, something we see a lot of in the woods. I redid my "camp" (that's what we call it in Maine), using lots of beadboard and have a bunch of inspiration plus before and after saved on one of my Pinterest boards. Thanks for your reply! The door is actually dark mahogany, by Pella. Door handle is the antique bronze, and the light fixtures are as well, but it’s a super dark bronze, almost looks black. Decorative lantern to be installed next week. Knowing that, do you still think black for a railing choice? My goal is for the railing to “disappear” to the eye, vs being an eye catcher. Especially for the stairs coming down to the ground level. See up close pictures of the door without the shadows, making it look black, and the lantern that is on the way!

I have a beadboard ceiling in our kitchen as well. There are some pics of my ceiling in this post:

Our contractor used Azek. They were 18' strips by 6" wide. They actually went from our kitchen into our eat-in area so it was quite a big space. I can't speak to how easy it was to install - it went up pretty quickly but there were multiple guys doing it. The ceiling looks fantastic and the seams are really hard to see. We've had no issues so far (been up for over a year - we've been in the house for 8 months) in terms of cracking or buckling and no issues in terms of keeping it clean. Hope this helps!

For what it's worth, just asked the contractor who installed the azek on our ceiling and he said it was relatively easy to install...

Hi mtnfever and aokat15, thanks for sharing the information. I did not know about Azek and AIC before, so I'll definitely check them out. Not sure how DH will take the fact that some of these planks are vinyl, but I'll show him some pictures. Good to hear your positive feedback, Aokat15!
