I've seen them at Ikea and in the JcPenney catalog. I would worry about scratches if you're doing wood. Can you put a throw rug under it?

I have seen the ones at JCP. I could put the rug before and after I moved it, but the purpose would be to wheel it about the kitchen area. Once I move it, it would be stationary until I move it again.

Almost sounds like more work than it would be worth!

We have a movable butcher block cart, really heavy, about 24" x 24" that we wheel in and out all the time. It's my husbands' counter for chopping barbecued meat. We have Bruce hardwood and it never has scratched up the floor. For that matter, nothing seems to scratch that floor. I bought it initially because a good friend of mine did her kitchen 3 years before me and said that her kids were skateboarding on that floor and it didn't scratch!

This is the company whose stuff I fell in love with . I don't know anything about cost but my guess is it's expensive.

We have a cart that rolls under an open section of counter. It's about 24 x 24 with a butcher block top and two butcher block shelves and steel uprights. It's quite heavy and the first set of casters with hard plastic wheels dented our very soft longleaf pine floors. I don't think any casters would scratch a floor but if your floors are soft you need to get softer rubber casters and the wider the better (it distributes the load better). I plan to use the cart both for extra work surface and for serving at holiday meals.

I have a cart in my current (old) kitchen. Wont have one in new kitchen, but not because don't like, I just wont need one. I find the portable cart very useful. It has a wonderful thick, butcher block top, industrial locking wheels, & a small drawer. I replaced the bin pull that came with it, so that it matched my cabs. It has been a huge bonus, I really find it versatile & handy.

Now I am leaning towards getting one, but maybe a unit I buy that is not the same as our cabinets and with a butcher block.

I saw a bamboo one today at TJ Maxx. It had a square granite section on top and then another section next to the granite that had a removeable bamboo cutting board. It had a closed cabinet and an open shelf and two drawers and it was on casters. The overall size was probably 36"x24", give or take (it was longer than it was deep). I think it was $349 or $399, something like that.

I bought the QVC one it matches my cabinets and has ss trim, and folds up to be put out of the way, its actually pretty nice. HTH

We redid our kitchen 15 years ago and we have a very small kitchen. Our cabinet maker made a rolling island out of a 30" drawer cabinet, put it on casters and added the corian counter top to it. It has been great and the most useful piece we've had in kitchen.

Ok, my third try, am trying to send you the link to QVC's butcher block cart in Walnut (matches my cherry cabinets perfectly and has stainless steel trim) it also comes in natural. I keep mine folded in the dining room when not in use.

Another option. . .a stainless restrauant style work table. Although mine isn't on wheels, the plastic feet slide/move just fine on my tile. The legs and bottom shelf are galvanized steel and aren't quite as "rough" in real life as they appear in the picture. I think they will clean up nicely with a little paint. If you purchase it from a restraurant supply, you can get them with lockable casters. This one came from a favorite local restrauant that closed because the owners decided to retire after 40+ years in business. It's 24 x 30 and I got it for $100. I had looked at more expensive tables (John Boos), but was nervous about dropping that much $ and it perhaps being too big for my galley kitchen (32 inches on stove/sink sides--but I'm a solo cook). Anyway. . .this is perfect for now. If I do decide to replace it with a Boos, I know the size will work and this one can go out to the potting shed. . .but I really like the utilitarian feel of this one. . .and the price was right!!

perhaps this will come thru. Fern, I really like your cart. If it came in a 24 x 30, I would definitely have considered it. I do, however, like the durability of the stainless top. . .and the 40+ years of patina!!

Thank you fern and cherigw. I love the idea of the folding one. Quote on the rolling base to look like a cab is a bit pricey and that is before any type of top. You all have been VERY helpful.

Why don't you check out the carts at JCPenney? They have a wide selection and will ship to your door. You do have to assemble them, however. But it's usually pretty easy, no more difficult than IKEA.
