How expensive to change layout from galley to L?

Pondering ideas for an eventual kitchen update in our townhouse. Currently, the kitchen is a galley layout. (will add pics when I get home). In the part that is open above the counter to the living room there is the sink, dishwasher, washer and dryer. The way furniture currently is, we don't really have room for a kitchen table.

The two options I see right now are

1) Keep existing layout, update cabinets, appliances, etc and just get some barstools and not worry about having a table.

2) Bigger update, turn galley into L and the opened up space would allow for a table.

Any thoughts?
