OK...my turn with a backsplash ?

Needing to meet with tile guys this week about backsplash. I am planning to do a creamy/bone subway tile...can't decide on 2X6 or 3X6...2X6 seems to look more modern to me, and that really isn't where I want to go. Anyway, I am unsure about the area behind the cooktop. I have considered a ledge that is cut into the wall, but that sounds comlicated and might be hard to keep clean but then also nice to put spices on, etc. If I do nothing, it might look too plain. If I do something, I might not like it...lol. We are having Santa Cecilia cream installed with wood floors and white cabinets. Any ideas for me? I have seen a herringbone pattern done and framed out with bullnose trim but it seems like 2X6 tiles were used??? As always, thanks for any help in advance!

Can you post pictures? Something behind the dooktop is always intereting. Did you look at the backsplash slide show in the FKB. Lots and lots of choices. Ireally don't think you can go wrong if you keep it simple. When you get into more complicated colors and patterns, that is when you really have to have a vision and know what you are doing.

Also on the herringbone, someone here is working on a herringbone pattern and said that it takes forever and a day. Now, even if an expert is doing it, I suspect that it will cost you a bundle in labor. Not that it isn't beautiful, but just sayin'.

yep that's my kitchen. Sorry it's not in your budget, but gpraceman does have a good idea about granite tiles. I have seen these used in place of granite slabs for the counter, when a budget dictated it. "To Me", they did not look that bad. I had to redo the area of the granite where the cook top is, due to a bad choice I made about cooktops, a 36" semi-circle Caldera. It died in about a year and the company went broke, so I had to replace it with a rectangular induction cooktop, Hence the granite rework. Well I could find Granite remnants (Arandis Gold) for next to nothing, (I paid about $75 for a little less than a half slab. So you may be able to do that too, and then have it cut to sizes you want for the tile, myself, the bigger the better, and the less grout lines. Thanks for your kind words about my kitchen, it is pretty unique, and as we tell folks here, Do what makes you happy, after all, it's your kitchen. For those of you that do like tiles and grout, that's great, as long as it's what you want, and you're not following others or doing what you "Think", might help sell the house later. Gary

But at the same time if a little tiling will tie up the project, then I'm game. jodi_socal: I'm a little disappointed when you said fire and ice won't work. I just LOVE that F&I BS. But then agin, I think I know all along it's a little too much for my kitchen. Caryscott & petra: Thanks for the picture petra, it says a thousand words. Is spectralight glass tiles? Prices are pretty reasonable. What about that milk green color? will it work? maybe with some garnet pieces sparingly mixed in. I will take some pictures and post two HD Behr's paint card to aid in the discussion of color. Thanks again ALL! I don't know what your client has in mind completely. It might be worth asking the client for some inspiration pictures for what she has in mind. I think some glass mosaics might be overpowering for that granite. But there are some glass mosaics that might work as long as they are very plain. Super white glass tile Maybe something like this with a tiny bit of pattern: Silver planks glass tile Or maybe this one which might work with the colour in the counter: glass mosaic - raw silk

I'm going with a herringbone in a frame underneath the hood with a 3X6 tile myself. I have a great picture that inspired me and that was done with a 2X4. It is not too contemporary at all and the 2X4 really makes the design. Unfortunately, I couldn't find the perfect off-white in that size and am going with the 3X6. The other tiles will be 6X6 in a running bond pattern. I would go with the 2X4 if I could!

I like backsplashes that are very simple. I guess I am a sucker for the scullery look, which eschews ornamentation.

I do like the niches, especially monochromatic ones like you describe. I always wonder though, isnt is a bit far to reach? Esp when the range is on? Maybe a plain tile backsplash and hang a large dish there, like art? You could change it out, too? I am thinking a very large flat-ish ceramic serving piece...

It can be any style form arts and crafts to retro, modern, italian, french, spanish.
