Cambria Buckingham island finally installed!

OK, so today was the day! We finally have our island top, and I love it!!

(Good camera battery is dead, can't find recharger in this mess! So iPad will have to do, though it doesn't really show the color.)

Just have to find the right bar stools now. I'll mosey over to aliris' thread about tall chairs (tee hee) to see all the pretty pics.

Thanks for helping me get through the waiting game (especially a2gemini)!

thanks for the info on e coli and radon, sahmmey, but like I said just quoting what the installer / fabricator said to me, hogwash or no. There may be other possible bacteria that may grow or lurk on surfaces other than e coli. then again they say those who have a not so clean home don't get ill as often as those who have a squeaky clean one and I tend to the latter. ha. I do live in Georgia now, have city water and live on a hillside with red (clay) dirt, who knows I may be getting a ton of radon emanating from the earth at this very moment but I think every little bit also can contribute, just like passive smoke can give folks lung cancer, sometimes it depends upon who might be susceptible to the culprit. one person gets cancer and another doesn't, it's all about making choices and reducing risk and 2.5 percent although small is still a percent if it's ends up affecting the person. snookums2, trebruchet and nosoccermom - I do think the engineered product may be distinguished from the natural product, with any home remodel we've done we have always tried to consider re-sale, not that we are thinking of selling now but we have a three story home and are in our mid 60s so the stairs may well make us have to sell sooner than later unfortunately; thus our consideration of the engineered produce as granite may be on the way out as far as the trends or so I've read on some threads here, but what do I know. I just want it to look good and be the best choice I can make at the time in'mho tmy jax, thanks so much I'll do a search for the Buckingham kitchen info you provided, will meet the installer this week so we shall see what we decide.

MizLizzie, It is very nice of you to share the issue with Cambria since we are thinking about using man-made hard surface for kitchen counter in the upcoming kitchen remodel. The incompetent fabricator messed up counter top edge and sink cut out in our hall bath. I have no confidence in him of redoing the counter top, I worry if he would make things worse by damaging connected backsplash, cabinet, faucet and sink. It has been two months; the poor work still bothers me so I know I would never be able to accept it. We too have demanding jobs and frequent business travels. We are trying to find the best time slot for the rework. Congratulations for your childÃ¢ÂÂs college graduation. Ours finished his graduate school last May. After the ceremony, we parents congratulated one another and jokingly shared the tips of calculating pay back rate for the bailout loans we provided. It was a lot of fun. Hello. I know I'm coming to your kitchen party late, but your kitchen is very close to what I am thinking of installing. Maybe you can answer a few questions? I have almost settled on the Cambria Buckingham, but I am worried it will make the kitchen too dark. I am having cabinets made, the stain will be very similar to the cabinets you installed. My floor is a white/off white porcelain tile (existing). I don't have can lights, only pendants over the islad, sitchen sink and light from west facing windows. I would love to know how you feel about your backsplash a many years later? I am thinking of using a plain subway tile, but worried it is too plain for the gorgeous Cambria. Thanks for any help you can throw my way!

I understand your disappointment. But I do wish everyone preparing to use Cambria would visit this discussion board first. I love Cambria, but learned with my first install you cannot trust their pattern consistency and the resin pool issue is real. After my first boondoggle, I realized you must choose your slab and you must participate in templating. Although many will refuse, I would not purchase from a fabricator who would not allow me to do this. Not Cambria. I have had good luck going to the warehouses to choose my Cambria slabs. Others have not. My last install was Crowndale. I purchased the 12” sample and what Cambria sent me did not look remotely like the sample on my cabinet maker’s sample shelf. He was stunned. So I toted it around to various showrooms. About 25% of the samples on the shelves looked like mine. Most were dramatic, like my cabinet maker’s sample. Same discrepancy when I viewed slabs. I think that is what you were looking for? Some brown resin to make it rich and more dramatic – – not resin pools, but a good mix of dark and light. With Cambria, this is a delicate dance. That said, your counters are beautiful. But if you cannot live with them, perhaps you can negotiate for a discount on a second install.

Thanks, everyone! It might be a while before I post good pics -- I've been looking for the recharger for quite some time. Who knows when it'll turn up... Besides, I might wait to post until the kitchen's finished. Again, who knows when that'll be!

Today, we achieved 99% completion. Down to only abt1. Only missing our table!

a2, are you going to keep it a surprise until the table comes in, or are you going to post updates? Which trim did you have installed today?

As for the calls for more pics: it's REALLY not finished. I keep the area in the shot above looking nice most of the time (except when I'm in the throes of cooking or baking), but the rest of my house looks something like this:

Under all that mess, which is stuff DH is using for the punch list, is my walnut desk top. Can't wait to get to the bottom of the pile and waterlox that beauty! You all will be the first to see it when it happens. Thanks for all the support!

Oh, and thirdkitchen, the shape of the island was dictated by the floor plan (a rectangular island would have resulted in an unfeasible aisle width), but I think the shape looks nice, too.

Four- I also love the shape of your island! And yes, I totally understand the clutter after 6 months of boxes living in the great room! My OCD DH barely survived!

I think I will wait on the last pictures as I posted zillions of them already. The last trim was the bottom edge of the cabinets. Now the plug mold and UC lights are hidden. Also put the blinds back up but I liked it better without any window treatments.

Looking forward to more pictures from you. So glad you hung in there!
