Cabinets In Progress (Pix) & Question

Well, here are my cabinets in progress - Kraftmaid Quarter Sawn Oak, "Morristown" (Shaker style) in "Kaffe" finish.

The large pantry you see is not bolted to the wall yet. The other wall isn't seen either. Contractor expects the balance to be finished today, other than the cabinet over the sink (the tiny window which is the bane of my existence)which was overhanging the window and had to be re-ordered at the last moment.

BTW - cabinet at window has to be moved over to be at same place as other cabinet - should be right up to edge as other. They need to place some fillers. Kind of wish we had not come up so close to the window with these - I'm not liking the boxed in feeling of it right now but maybe once it's all finished (and the cabinet above is installed, sill added, etc.) it will look better.

I'm telling you - that window just annoys me but hindsight IS 20/20.

Anyhoo - I have a question about that BEAM you see! Anyone have any interesting ways to handle this to make it less prominent? Or to highlight it instead? Not sure what color I'm going for on the walls yet - to be determined as a whim call this weekend.

FYI - counters will be Ceasarstone Jerusalem Sand - no backsplash picked yet so I'm open to suggestions based on that and; Hardware ORB, as is faucet. Sink is the brown Silgranite and appliances are SS.

Oh and BTW - the two cabinets flanking the window get glass doors, so it may not be as much of a black hole as it appears right now either.

How about if you paint the beam to match your cabinetry or the rest of the woodwork in the house to make it stand out and look intentional?

DRAGONFLY - As for watering, I water from the bottom until final plant out. Then, unless I have the plant in a SWC (I build my own), all watering is from the top. And you're right, I judge each plant individually as to its needs. I am fully retired now and have all the time I want to spend on my hobbies. I'm happy you found the spreadsheet useful. Don't forget to change any data values to reflect the world of growing tomatoes where YOU live. Also add any toms (or ??) to track your garden's results. NATURALSTUFF - My plants are normally still bearing fruit at first frost. If you give a plant all of its needs, it doesn't have to go "rootbound" in a container. Rootbound plants are telling you that they are not receiving all of their needs, and they're extending more roots to try and find what they need. Last year, the last plant to go was a Cherokee Purple that was in an 18 gallon plastic pot. The plant had four toms left and they eventually ripened on the kitchen counter. I only had 23 containers last year, but they produced more than 270 pounds of tomatoes. I think that's a pretty good yield. I had plenty of tomatoes here at the house and gave away enough to have my neighbors knocking on the door this spring saying I should not forget them this year. I control the heat of "Hot-lanta" by giving my plants some shade when the sun's intensity is its strongest. I also don't allow the sun to have much direct contact with the few black nursery pots that I'm currently using. Watering in the AM also helps offset the heating of the container. Each grower needs to deal with the environment they are given. I've grown both in the ground and in container over the last 55+ years and have decided now the potting mixes and fertilizer/soil amendments available are far better than growing in the ground. So, even if I could have my dream 5 acre tomato ranch, I would still grow in containers - lots of containers. I mean, just think of all the soil-borne diseases that you eliminate. How firm is the beeswax that the rest of you are using? The only Bee's Oil I could find locally was at Williams Sonoma. It is very soft, so there is no need to heat it up (tho I tried--just out of curiosity. It didn't really melt at all--just got warm). It has the texture somewhat of a shea butter cream. As soon as my hands rub it, it melts into the counter. If it were more solid, I think I might get frustrated with it, and switch to regular mineral oil. I use it as hand cream in between the SoapstoneSpaTreatment (trademarked--tho I didn't coin this term--someone else here did. Who?) My feet could really use a spa treatment. Thinking...thinking...Can't figure out how to do that without slipping and falling. We need to get some t-shirts/bumperstickers made: "Real stoners use their hands" "Have you rubbed your soapstone today?" "My parents went to Punta Gorda and all they brought me was this soapstone" "My other counter is made of soapstone too" "My soapstone is silkier than your Chipman Middle School Honor student" etc Can't wait to see more pictures! I can imagine how stressful the waiting and wondering has been (will it fit? did we template right?). Thank goodness it turned out so well! Hooray!! Francy

Thanks everyone! I am so enjoying just the empty space and walking around it. I do have concerns though because the space will be tight with everything in... That is so funny. Never even saw the bunny before...the "eyes" of the bunny are actually the holes for the bracket and wires for the tv that will go there. breezy--that is the frame for the hood, the hood lining is already in and they will be covering the hood in plaster and adding columns later. Thanks for the tip on paint. oldbat--cabinets are due July 25th. :( marti8a--that green house in back is our garage. And the space between the house and the garage is essentially our "backyard"; it's actually technically a side yard. I will take pictures as they build out the range hood, thanks for suggesting that, as I am not quite sure how it's all going to formulate.

The rest of the woodwork in the house is similar to the cabinets, which is why I chose these (old 1915 Craftsman).

Very beautiful! I'm considering KraftMaid cabs as well, but then I hear someone say that their quality isn't as good as it used to be. I'm interesting to hear what you have to say about them when you've used them a bit.

How wide is your window? I'm having a window issue as well, but I thought mine was small...You have me beat. The rest of the kitchen will be so stunning that the small window won't even be noticed!

The beam...I'm not one to highlight them, and I also like clean white ceilings. I say paint the same color as ceiling. It will blend in more.

Can't wait to see your finished product!

I've already used Kraftmaid in the past - my old home. Had them for over 9 years and they were as perfect as the day they went in. I highly recommend them. I took a good look at them last night and they seem to be exactly the same as I remember.

The window, I believe is 3'x 2'? Something like that. Maybe a bit bigger. I hate the thing. I've told this before so I'll try and be brief. The existing was that size - I thought that we'd save money by not cutting into the wall (house is terracotta and nobody had experience with cutting into it) and risking structural damage. Ordered said window. When we demolished the kitchen we discovered the window had already been replaced once, blocked up with regular old masonry and the old opening was HUGE. I could have gotten a really large window there :(

Tried to cancel the small window order but it had already gone through and was being manufactured. I didn't want to lose that $400, and add another whatever to my budget so I just sucked it up.

The only good thing, is there is no view out of that side. Small lot line, faces my neighbors fence and her side windows. Nothing to see there, keep moving on lol.
