we are making progress!!! pix!!!

Hi all!!! Demo began on May 9th. A lot of progress has been made. We had to tear down a load bearing wall, close off old back door and tear down back porch, and create new entrance to the back yard through french doors as well as build back deck...

Momentum has been great and I am so happy with the outcome so far. They just finished putting the hardwood fir floors in today and will wait for the unfinished wood to acclimate before they try and match the stain with the exisisting family room floors. Unfortunately we will have a delay in cabinets so there might be downtime for about 3 weeks as we are waiting on cabinets which are due on July 25th.

At least we will be able to enjoy the space as is and finally get to our backyard and do some barbequeing instead of walking out the front door thru side gate to get to the bbq. Ha!!

Since you answered your own posting it didn't hang around at the top of the forum list and is moving down pretty quickly - and a lot of people don't look past the top ten, so you may not get much response. But also, others may share my confusion about what you've presented and what you're really asking for. I'm afraid your two pictures have left me baffled as to where the deck is relative to the view of the back of the house, what the topography is (are those piles of dirt or an actual slope?), what the back yard looks like from inside it, and where your property begins and ends. I can't get a sense of the space at all. Finally, I can hear that you're feeling frustrated, but not sure what your primary objective is for the yard - distance view, nice space to be in, something to look out the window at. All that is to say that people can't offer much help unless you can give us/them clear questions and parameters. But here are my general thoughts, for what its worth from a protected zone 8 to unprotected zone 5! Can you create a protected zone with fencing or a hedge (assuming you can find a hedge plant that would survive?) Are there planting techniques that can help with survival, say planting in spring not fall? Can you plant trees outside the zone of the house, say trees that grow to twenty feet, thirty feet away? Finally, while it may take some time to figure out what will grow, plan the layout and the hardscape first (those piles of dirt look like they need retaining to me, for instance). Something amorphous like a wildflower meadow isn't going to look like much other than "junky" or weedy without a frame and a context, which retaining walls would provide. They would also frame and tidy up the distance view of the house. Maybe a few more photos would help. Others may be able to help with plant selection and care, although you may also check in to specific plant forums - tree forum, conifer forum, regional forum for your area, etc - for that. KarinL

Rustin --- I broke down and bought a cheap-o hydraulic hoist for just the reason you brought up. I work alone and some of the pieces I routinely have to move about weigh as much as a half ton. This particular table will top 8oo pounds when complete. I'm getting too old to manhandle that kind of mass and using leverage and rollers like the ancients is just too dang slow. I've even put 10" wheels on my latest work table to ease the process of getting big pieces where I need them. As for the finish, the table top will mimic two seperate, large weathered planks with lots of grain and knots but worn smooth with age. The client wants greyed, muted colors which will work well and be appropriate on this piece. The legs and stretchers will have bark with some patches worn off. The trestle bar connecting the leg sets is going to look like a split or half-round log that is slightly convex on top...a nice place to rest your feet. All the joints will be a tapered fit with the ends of the trestle mortised fully through the outer stretchers. I guess I need to go back and add the approved sketch to the album. A picture of the finished design would certainly make understanding the constuction process simpler. I'll do that right now. Thanks for the interest and have a wonderful holiday season.

Yeah I can't wait to get my trees out into a good spring rain! There is just something special about rain for plants! Its borderline magical when it comes to growth haha I just noticed how red your new growth is! Its so healthy im jealous! A little of my tender new growth on my meyer is injured from cold. I had it sitting by the back door in the sun and my son opened the door for 10 minutes with it being 10 degrees outside! Shriveled 3 new baby leaves. hahaha. He is 3 yrs old. What can I do? Snow calls to kids haha. I am glad that cold snap is over!

barbcollins....you are hilarious !! I have bunnies all over the place, and I missed it ! Good eye. Now back to business.....it looks like an awesome space and am anxious to see it come together. What a job--eh ?

Lovely, lovely light. The minimal hood look you have going is....interesting though. ;-)

None of my business really, but when painting test samples its best to paint them in much, much larger squares than what I see on your walls. You get a truer sense of the color that way.

Great progress annsch! Looks like electrical, plumbing and drywall are done....When do cabinets go in? Wonderful light and love the transom. I think that's a good luck bunny :)

Wow, you are going to have an awesome space. I love the door and transom too. When it is open, it's like the deck is part of the room. Is the green house outside part of your house too?

Any chance you can take pictures as they build out your range hood? We haven't gotten to that part yet and I didn't know they were made like that.

Thanks everyone! I am so enjoying just the empty space and walking around it. I do have concerns though because the space will be tight with everything in...

That is so funny. Never even saw the bunny before...the
"eyes" of the bunny are actually the holes for the bracket and wires for the tv that will go there.

breezy--that is the frame for the hood, the hood lining is already in and they will be covering the hood in plaster and adding columns later. Thanks for the tip on paint.

oldbat--cabinets are due July 25th. :(

marti8a--that green house in back is our garage. And the space between the house and the garage is essentially our "backyard"; it's actually technically a side yard. I will take pictures as they build out the range hood, thanks for suggesting that, as I am not quite sure how it's all going to formulate.

I can't WAIT to see the cabs in place! Love the light,open space and that transom is way cool. And I am guessing you will BBQ a bit more with this new lovely set up.

It is kind of weird when they start putting the cabs in, and your giant newly drywalled room goes from empty to full, but it only takes one minute to get used to :)
