Well, no. It just has to be on the web SOMEwhere and since this is already on the web, you can use it. Still, it's not considered good web manners to borrow someone's picture without giving them credit. If it's a vendor or manufacturer, you're sort of advertising for them so I think it's okay as long as you say whence the picture. They shouldn't mind the extra bandwidth use if they're getting a plug. Like

No. For images that come off of the net, generally this is the procedure:

Click on the photo and a list comes up which includes "copy image location." When you click on that, it is copied to your computer and then you paste it into your photo script:

HOWEVER, the particular photo you linked to was rendered in Adobe Flash, and you can't copy a Flash location. What I did is go back to your page where I found your lantern. The large feature picture was also a Flash picture (argg!), but I found a picture down below that was a simple jpg. Ta da! I clicked on it, copied the location, pasted it into the photo script, and there it is.

Guys, I was trying and having no luck. I was doing what you said but it wasn't working. I was about to sheepishly ask for even more details (yikes), but then I did it! Hmmmmm, now I don't know if I remember what I did? Oh, but joy bells, I did it!

Ah, but Grasshopper, Suzanne's is not the exact picture. The one she did is the hanging version of the post lamp I am looking at. She explained how you couldn't copy Adobe flash, but needless to say, all that went right over my dumb Pup head. I'm just happy I got any kind of picture to show up. LOL! And again, I thank both you and Suzanne for your help.

BTW, Fori, don't know if you saw it, but I finally orderd my end grain butcher block top. You helped me so much in wading through that decision. We went with two inch depth, the overall size will be 49"X42" with no clipped corners. I will post a pic when the top comes in which should be in about a month.

Now that you know how to do it, be judicious in applying it. When you do it, you're stealing bandwidth. Most commercial sites have plenty of bandwidth and since you're advertising their wares, they're okay with you appropriating the image (which is technically a copyright violation whether you put it in your Photobucket account or not). Photobucket is setup specifically for sharing, so linking something from a public Photobucket account, or your own, is what they're there for. Nowadays, Photobucket also allow you to save an image from the web in one step, rather than having to save it locally and then upload it back to the web.

Sometimes people will post an image from a small time page and the owner will trace it back here wondering what all the hits were about. Every time the thread with the image gets opened, the originating website registers a hit. These are people who get very touchy if we're criticising them (including criticising them for appropriating images from one of us!), though sometimes they're happy to have us discussing them and wish we'd actually click over to their sites.

I used to make my images clickable so they'd take you to the Amazon page, or whatever, where it could be found, but since Photobucket, among others, insert a link to their home page in your picture code, I stopped bothering because people would think it would just take them there, and I wasn't about to bother with a tooltip.
