When you say a "D-shaped sink will give me a little more room", do you mean countertop room, or sink room? I am only asking because a D-shaped sink will give you less usable space in the sink than a rectangular sink, due to the D-shape's curved corners. A rectangular-shaped sink is a more efficient use of the interior space of the sink. If you compare a D-shape in a 27" cabinet and a rectangular shape in a 27" cabinet, you would be able to fit larger pans in the rectangular sink. If you already knew this, and were actually talking about having more room on your counter, then a D-shape would be good. But perhaps this clarification would help others on the forum with a similar question.

This sink was actually purchased to be a food prep sink and I didn't realize it was quite so large. I am glad it is though....I really like it!! It's in a 24" sink base.

akchicago- I just thought the D shape would give me a bigger sink. It measure 3 inches wider(or towards the wall) than a rectangular. I guess you have a good point, anyone else want to chime in about this?

I sacrificed a little sink room for a little more counter space because I wanted more counter space. But I think it depends on your personal preference and how you use your sink. I thought about it long and hard -- my dishwasher is right across from the sink in my island and I put most of the dishes straight into the DW. All of my pots/pans fit in my sink (but not at the same time) and I usually wash them right away and one at a time, from nearby stove to sink so that's not a problem for me. In my small kitchen, it works well for me. If I had more counter, I'd have more sink :) But I did really have to think about it and what might annoy me... I'm ready to be bothered by it at Thanksgiving but I'm guessing the Pilgrims might have had it worse than me! :)

While I think the D-shaped sinks are so lovely, I have to say that the rectangular ones are indeed better if space is at a premium and maximizing interior bowl space is your objective. If you look at the specifications of the Ticor S405 you mention, you can see clearly that its measurements of 21" x 19" do not include the large amount of cut-off areas of the corners. If the measurements were just to where the corners are cut off, then the dimensions would be much smaller than 21" x 19". Now if you look at, say, the specs for the rectangular BlancoSpex Plus Single Bowl #501-304, while its corners are slightly curved, its 23" x 16" dimensions are almost entirely usable. I do think that some rectangular sinks are too severe-looking, and food can get caught in those sharp corners. What I like about the BlancoSpex Plus is that it is rectangular, yet still has a bit of a curve to the corners to soften them. And it's almost the same price as the Ticor S405.

Thanks, that definitely helps. The bowl size on the Blanco is actually 21x16, just about the same as the S505 rectangle. I think I'd go with the Ticor to get the included sink grid. It's almost $60 extra for the Blanco sink grid. Thanks so much for taking the time to post this for me.

Positano, it looks like you do get more bang for your buck on the Ticor S505 at just $160 including the sink grid! The BlancoSpex Plus would be about $240 with the grid. And the Ticor is 16 gauge to boot. Although I have to admit I still like the BlancoSpex design better because it has the drain toward the back rather than in the center. That's handy when you have a pan in the sink, since it won't cover the drain since the drain is toward the back. But the Ticor price can't be beat. Ah, so many factors to consider....

The Ticor S505 is also 9 1/2 inches deep while the blanco is only 8.5. I do like how the drain on the blanco is towards the back though.

All of you with the D shape. Do you feel it is smaller? Can you put a cookie sheet flat on the bottom? I tend to load my dishwasher right away, so I don't keep a lot of dishes in it all the time. I have a rectangular sink now and I keep a dish drainer in the left of the sink. It hooks onto the front and back of it.

you can't put a cookie sheet flat in the bottom. The single large bowl is much larger than one of a double bowl sink's bowls, but not as large as the single bowl that the larger ticor has.

Also...if you DO decide to get this sink, do not buy it from Galaxy tool supply's web site. Find them on Ebay. Many of their auctions have a "buy it now" and also a "make an offer". You just make an offer and in a day or so they will tell you if they accept or not. From what I have seen, they usually accept the offer!! I think I paid only $90 for mine.

Yes, you can put a cookie sheet flat on the bottom. I have the Ticor S405D, also a "D". The left bowl is 1/4" narrower & 1/4" shallower than the S405 and I think there's plenty of room in the "D" bowl. Here's a picture of my largest cookie sheet (19" x 12") in the sink:

I have to respectfully disagree w/those saying you'll get more room in the 505 than the 405...if you do the math, the square footage of the 505 is only 330 in2 and the 405D is 350 in2 (split the "D" into a rectangle + trapezoid). The 405 is 1/4" wider & deeper, so it's actually a little bit more than the 405D

S405D: 21-3/8" x 18-3/4" x 9"--> 350in2
S405: 21-5/8" x 19" x 9-1/2"

S505: 21" x 15-3/4" x 9-1/2"-->330in2

Where the difference comes in, is in the fact that it isn't the entire 19" depth the entire width of the sink. But, as my pictures show, it's still plenty of room!

I have the 405D, so my faucet is b/w the two...but it's off to the right for the big bowl & off to the left for the small bowl...and no, it doesn't bother me. To rinse the entire sink I do have to take my faucet off it's mount, but I'd probably do that anyway to be sure I rinsed the sides as well as the bottom of the sink. I also discovered that my faucet allows me to move its head around and mount it that way to allow me to have water in any part of the sink. I don't know if that was part of the design, but it works!

We're both right handed but mounted our faucet on the left side because, well, it just looked better there in our space. We set the faucet on both sides to see which looked better and chose that way.

It did take a little getting used to but not much.

We are endlessly amazed at the amount of pots and dishes the S405 can swallow, as buehl attests to above (though we just have the single bowl).

I canâÂÂt walk and chew gum at the same time so BuehlâÂÂs math threw me for a loop but I think I agree with her. You might lose a little width (at the rear) because of the rounded corners but you gain front to back and overall space.

We had a Blanco Silgranit D in our last house and now have roughly the same sized rectangular sink in this one and, almost 4 years later, I still miss it. Faucet placement did seem odd at first but I found it a lot easier to clean around the sink because there was an uncluttered strip to the back and more space behind the faucet.

Our single hole faucet (which I recommend if you intend to have other holes) was on the right and we had a water filter on the left. What I especially remember enjoying about that sink is there was nothing looming over the middle, even if I did occasionally turn the water on when I had either the filtered water or faucet pushed out of the way, right on the counter. :)

My faucet is set on the right. I was worried at first about not being to set in the middle which I didn't realize. But when I saw it set up, I loved it and still do!

Organic Nettie -- my sink is an Elkay. Its probably so shiny because I use ZEP stainless cleaner on it once a week after a week of cleaning it with soap and water. And it's also new! :)

My faucet is the Kohler Vinnata in brushed nickel. I really like it and it goes with my "vision" of my kitchen...a traditional kitchen (but not overly lavish or too frilly). There is some splashing but it's mostly when washing your hands...if you put your hands under the faucet above the top of the sink. There really isn't any splashing when washing dishes, etc...probably b/c everything is "inside" the sink.

As to adjusting to it being on the side, I've always had 2-bowl sinks and since the faucets have always been b/w the 2 bowls, I've always had a faucet off to the side of the sink...so no adjusting. And now that I think about it, my Prep Sink faucet is also off to the side. With the exception of bathroom sinks, I don't think I've ever had a faucet centered over a sink bowl.

Hmmm.......thinking more about it, wouldn't a centered faucet get in the way while working in the sink? You'd have to turn it away. With one off to the side you don't have to since it isn't "in your face" like a centered one is.

My faucet is the Delta Allora and I really love it. It toggles between stream or spray. I usually leave it on stream and there is no splashing. When it is on the spray option, sometimes when you get it too close, it will spray.

I really like it on the side and to the right. It you see the lever is to the right so it makes it easier to use, especially for DS who is only 8. What I really like about the side mount is that I can fill pots or my coffee pot by setting them on the counter beside the faucet and swiveling the faucet around to fill it.

What finish is yours? And any problems with the soap dispenser coming off or not pumping properly? I just read a couple of reviews that mentioned it.

How much did you end up paying for it? I love the stainless, but it is almost a hundred more than chrome.

The sink is not Ticor. It is the freebie that the Silestone people gave me. I am happy with it but did have trouble finding a grid for it. I bought a Ticor for the island sink and really like it and the grid so then I wanted to get the grid for the big sink.

I hate to say that I have not been happy with the soap dispenser. It does wiggle around and not stay anchored well. I planned on calling their customer service because somebody here said they did that and Delta replaced it and the replacement was better. I also thought about putting down some kind of caulk or silicone that might hold it more secure....just haven't done it yet.

I love the stainless. Even though it is more expensive, I felt like it is worth it for long term happiness. :) After all, why scimp on something that will be used many times every day.

I think I bought my faucets from efaucets - I'll have to check. I basically just searched the internet until I found the best price. I also have the Allora prep faucet for the island sink.

How about an elkay sink. D shaped 23 9/16 x 21 1/8 or rectangular 23 1/2 x 18 1/4. Min cab. 27. I am in the same boat going back and forth between sink space and counter space. I am comsidering the elkay granite 25 w x 18 1/2. Good luck.

WEll, I'm happy to say I just got the Ticor S405 off Ebay for $90. It usually sells for $169. I just made a bid and they accepted!

The Elkay would have been good too, but the price was a lot more.

Mygar, thanks for the info about the faucet. It's too bad there are problems with the soap dispenser. If you had to do it all over would you get the Allora even though the soap disp. isn't great?

Sorry....just saw this again. My faucet is Kohler Simplice. It's not actually hooked up yet (I just stuck it in the hole to take a picture for you) so I can't tell you if it splashes too much or not. Glad you got a good deal on the Ticor. It's always fun to get a bargain, isn't it?

I would absolutely get the Delta Allora faucet again. I actually debated about getting the soap dispenser and probably should have gotten a different one but I'm not giving up home yet on this one.

Maybe I'll get the Allura with a different soap dispenser than.

ccoombs, I do love the simplice, but I thought it only came with a seperate handle for the faucet. I would really like only one hole, but yours looks so nice.

Would it be terrible to put the faucet in the center? I was thinking 3 holes (no deck)...for the faucet and two handles on either side. The sink is in an island so we should have room to center it. Thoughts?

Granite measure is 2morrow, went with D-shape sink for the most room in my 27" sink base.... Heard many bad things about pull down sprayers ?? Does anyone have any input ? Was reading some questions about right or left side for faucet...I am right handed, putting faucet on Left side FOR SURE no doubt.. Turn water on with left hand hold coffee pot in right, if I put faucet on left, there is no question I'd hit the coffee pot on edge of granite, it would be very awkward try it.
