I'd be worried if you had light oak floors and light coloed cabinets. No contrast is so boring!

In my master bath I have travertine (light) with chocolate cabinets. The resulting contrast is a lovely finish. In my kitchen, jacobean walnut floors (read DARK) with natural cherry. Contrast is so much prettier than blah on blah :o)

Oak and walnut are beautiful together! I have oak cabs and walnut floors and love it! Like iigloochic says, I'd be worried if they were to close in color.

Thanks I feel a little better now, At least I am not panicking anymore. My floors are really light oak and my cabinets will be walnut stained oak. I did want some contrast but i'm worried that I went too dark. I can still change the color of the stain. The cabinets aren't started yet. The carpenter came and got more measurements today and picked up the stain as well.

I personally don't like walnut stain, it looks medeterrain. Almost black. A whole kitchen in that color is not really a good idea....? Right? A contrast between your floor and cabinets is great! Just maybe a rich brown color, maybe with a hint of red in the brown would be nice.

I disagree with nicole, there are some beautiful ebony, black and walnut kitchens on this forum. Relax, if you love walnut then go for it, it will be a beautiful contrast to your floors.

And just to be clear. Oak does not take stain well. To get a dark tone from the walnut stain, the grain will need to be popped most likely. Walnut will give you a gorgeous brown tone wood, but most likely, given that it's stain on oak, it's going to be fairly light.

Our oak floors had to be popped and then we used ebony stain to reach the jacobean walnut (which is a black brown tone).

Staining oak is a challenge but of course a pro can do it. But it won't turn the cabinets to walnut :) I think you'll have a soft chocolate color in the end.

My one regret in my last kit was no contrast between cabs and floor. The dark cabs will look good with light floor.

Agree....the contrast between the light and dark will be very pretty. My cabs are red oak, stained English Pecan. The floors are white oak, unstained (although they are not finished yet). The contrast will look wonderful. Here's a picture....my cabinets are not quite as dark as yours though.

Thanks everybody for all the help. The stain looked really dark in the can but the Carpenter has done a strip of oak for me and I think its going to be close to what I want. Hubby really likes it.
Igloochic Looks like you are right on. the walnut isn't going to be really dark on oak which is what I want so I am feeling a lot better about it now.
Also the kitchen floor will be redone. Don't know what I'm going to go with for that. The light oak is in the dining room area and rest of the house but there is going to be cabinets next to the light oak flooring as well which is why I wanted the contrast.

I really appreciate those of you who have taken the time to answer my post. You have helped me a lot.

Iris16, no sorry. They are not finished yet. We decided to put the same floor in the bedroom so I will finish them all at the same time...probably a month away from that.
