Grout should not be used at a change of plane and material like this, it WILL crack.

Dh caulked the void where the granite meets the backsplash. He did not use grout for the reason brickeyee mentioned above. Someone had told us that it may be a good idea to wait a few months after cabinets and granite were installed. I think it was to let everything settle. So, we waited about 5 or 6 months before doing the caulking.

Do you use silicon caulk or sanded caulk? Thanks!!

If possible you want to use a silcone caulk as that will perform the best in a kitchen and last the longest. I used a laticrete grout for my kitchen and they have color matched silicone to caulk to match the grout so I bought that online.

Dap Tub and Tile or Kitchen and Bath caulk. I believe it's silicone because it stays/dries soft and flexible. Dh says Dap is the brand he used but other brands are fine. It was simple to buy white to go with our white backsplash. It also comes in clear.
The guy who installed the granite and the ss undermount sink used a similar type caulk (maybe what padola07 referenced above) that matched the stainless steel. So, the seam where the sink and the granite meet is sealed well and blends in.

I used the caulk that matches my grout... it looks pretty much identical to the grout, but has flexibility.

I used caulk that was a close match to the grout color.
