show me your soapstone counter with undermount cast iron sink?
Comments (6)I was all set to order the Rohl Allia. Went to the store and, while I was there, looked around at all the bath and kitchen displays. I got to the Kohler section and saw an interesting display. There was a large divided sink with a heavy SS frying pan in it. The frying pan had a sign challenging people to try to damage the sink with the pan. Not to miss such an opportunity, I picked up the pan and dropped it from a height of 6 inches into the sink. Nothing happened. So I then picked up the frying pan and tapped the edge of the sink. Again, no damage. Then I whacked the sink a half dozen times harder than I thought any accident could cause. No damage-not even a scratch. The pan just bounced off. I was amazed. So I asked the salesperson, who had just told me that fireclay was pretty durable, if it could take that sort of abuse. She just shook her head. So I ordered the Kohler Bakersfield sink instead....See MoreMold resistant silicone for under-mount sink?
Comments (13)babyboomer1001: 100% silicone is perfect caulk between a sink flange and the bottom of stone. Polyseamseal and other Latex caulks are not; they do not have the adhesive stickiness or flexibility of silicone. It's best if you can pull your sink, clean the sink flange and stone bottom, recaulk with silicone and reinstall the sink. If this isn't reasonably possible, use a stiff plastic shim or plastic laminate to gouge the caulk out, clean the gap with acetone, and recaulk with silicone. Ignoring a leaking sink flange can have catastrophic consequences if your top has been "rodded" or reinforced with steel. If the fabricator used the wrong rod and/or the wrong bedding the rod can rust and blow up your top. I've fixed about 8 of these so far and it runs around $1,000.00-$1,600.00....See MoreBridge Faucet with Undermount Sink?
Comments (17)Thanks aokat! My faucets are all from the Rohl country kitchen collection. The bridge at the main sink (Shaw fireclay) has the side spray, which I love. The other picture is actually my utility sink (cross handled faucet) in the laundry room which is visible from the kitchen so I went with something similar. My prep, a Kohler 17.5 X 15.75 and set in sidways due to size limitations, does not have a bridge or side spray. My DH, who is the main cook, prefers this faucet. We had to put the faucet on the right of the sink rather than behind the sink, due the shallow counter there. It works out great and is handy and convenient for the prep use. He does not like having a spray, so we didn't put one there. Honestly, I don't miss it, the sink is smaller and we don't do clean up there and really don't feel the need for it. The main thing to remember about faucet size, is make sure your faucet reaches the drain. We thought we only needed a 7" throw on the faucet, but ended up exchanging for the deeper 9" because of too much splash....See MoreWho best to remove and replace under-mount farm sink?
Comments (14)$2000 is a steal for what Joseph would be taking on....especially if he promises to replace the top if he breaks it. Not many fabricators would offer that! My fabricator would only change out this sink if they homeowner signed a waiver...that if the top was damaged during the rework, they would not be liable. Same goes for uninstall and reinstall of countertops...homeowner takes on entire liability. In my neck of the woods, just a plumbing REHOOK costs $400-$800. But back to the liability....homeowners often wonder why the high price....'but it's just a little sink install"...why is it so expensive. By the time Joe would pack up tools, drive to your house, unload, set up and get an extra man (maybe) to help lift sink out, a half day is gone. You aren't paying for the sink install as much as a very specialized SKILL and service that is very hard to find. You might be able to hire a handyman to give it go....but that's a huge risk to you. Joe does it everyday, knows the tricks, knows the sink models...has been around forever. You're paying for years of knowledge and experience. Skilled, dying out trades are all getting top dollar these days and I only see this as going higher in the future. Get your sons and daughters into trade schools. I wish I made as much $ as one of my 30-something woodworking friends makes....See Morejmfromil
