Crown Molding install?

My vent hood cabinet is rectangular in shape and extends all the way to the ceiling. It has been unsatisfactory trimmed with crown. The 2 short pieces normal to the wall have a visual gap between the crown and cabinet box. The crown molding was framed ( u shaped) on the ground and then slid in place and nailed to the cabinet. It is obvious the long piece, parallel to the wall, was cut to long thus resulting in the unsightly gap on the sides.

I've never seen crown installed this way and trying to figure out why it was installed in this manner. My only guess is to avoid any issues with the ceiling not being level. The cabinet is 42" wide.

Does this make sense or is this just a short cut for the installer?

What would be considered a common fix for this problem?
