crown molding on vaulted or two story ceilings?
Comments (12)Thanks to everyone who responded with their pictures and comments. Mavsfan, those ceilings are looking fantastic! I think the different designs you've used throughout your new home give it such character and charm. I really appreciate the pictures. Wonbyherwits, the molding in your room is beautiful. Our builder uses what they refer to as double crown molding because of the "wow" factor and also because he feels with the higher ceilings, a single piece of crown gets lost in the shuffle. After seeing how you added the extra four inches to your molding and the effect you get from it, his opinion is one I would echo and do the same in our home. Worthy, after hearing of your experience, I think we'll go ahead with the crown and have it installed now than adding it later and ending up incurring additional costs (we all know how easily that happens and how quickly those $$$ add up). Speaking of $$$, do you have any idea what it might cost or should cost approximately to add a coffered ceiling to a 14' x 19' dining room. It is rectangular in shape so there are not unusual cuts if that would be a factor. Thanks for any help you can give us. Luckymom, the trim work in the pic you posted is droolworthy and has given me a few more ideas--thanks!...See MoreHood Crown Molding- Does it HAVE to match the cabinets?
Comments (4)IMO, the cabinetry crown should be the same shade of white as the cabinets. On another thought, does the wall crown molding profile and size match the cabinetry molding profile and size? If not, I can see two options: 1. Stop the wall moulding short of the cabinet and allow for a few inches of wall space before the cabinetry crown hits in the wall (which means the two shades of white won't touch) or 2. Have a bear of a time trying to scribe the cabinetry molding to fit over the wall crown molding. If by chance they are the same profile and size I'd still match the molding to the cabinetry. I ask about the profiles because it is the issue that caused my hood to drop low enough for the cabinetry crown to hit the wall below my wall crown....See MoreInstalling cabinets w/ crown moulding to ceiling
Comments (7)A nailer is atached to the top of each cabinet flush with the front of the cabinet box. These nailers are placed BEFORE the cabinets are hung on the wall. A section of 1x lumber works OK, but if you have room some 2x provides a better nailing surface. You can use flat head screws from inside the cabinets through the top to fasten. After the cabinets are installed the crown is fastened to this nailer with about 1/4 inch of overlap onto the face of the cabinet to conceal the nailer and provide a clean line. The biggest propblem is often that ceilings are rarely as stright as molding. You are likely to need some coping to get te trim to fit evenly on the cabinet face and still meet the ceiling for any distance. Uneven molding shows badly above the doors of a cabinet, so it must be aligned there. Depending on the molding style and how un-flat the ceiling is the variation here does not show as much. Nothing shows worse than a gap that changes size....See Moreanyone have 2 different types of crown molding in their kitchen?
Comments (0)our cabinets have a crown molding on them. our great room has a different crown molding (simpler, more contemporary). the great room walls flow directly to the kitchen and i could not figure out a good end point for the crown molding from the great room. so it ends near the cabinets but a small space was left to distinguish the cabinet space of the kitchen from the rest of the kitchen. is this going to look totally weird?...See Moresherriz
