I've got cherry cabs with natural stain that opens up (no walls) into a great room that has a sitting booth and entertainment center. My idea is that the cherry cabs will have matching crown moldings. However, the great room will have white moldings. Is having two color types of moldings a faux pas? what if the crown moldings have the same design but different colors? or should I just forego crown moldings in the great room?

Well, our kitchen cabinets are being made as we speak so I'm talking about what's on paper .... However, our house at present has no crown moulding, so the crown which will be installed throughout the house will also be installed in the kitchen. (I know, not helpful so far.) The kitchen is going to be a fairly bright white -- I mean, the kitchen cabinets and wainscoting. The trim in the rest of the house is almost a pale yellow -- it's a deep, deep cream (Benjamin Moore Calming Cream). We'll have all the kitchen crown and other trim (windowsill, baseboard, door casing) painted to match the fairly bright white. We'll have to have plinths where the kitchen meets the family room, though, as it will be in the Calming Cream and would just look plain goofy (I think) to have white meet yellow. Our colors are noticeably different. I'm having a hard time envisioning your two colors (the white with charcoal glaze and Navajo White) and if they'd fight or if there's a subtle enough difference so that it would be okay to have both in the same room. I like the idea of continuity, either whole-house continuity or room continuity. I think for a kitchen, which will have so much of the painted finish (cabinets, trim), I'd vote for the crown in your kitchen matching the color of your cabinetry (doing all in the white with charcoal glaze). I did. I have a kitchen that is part of one large open space with the breakfast room and the family room. I wanted to take the cabinets to the ceiling and not lose the crown in the rest of the space. We couldn't figure out any way to transition, and I didn't have a different look I had to have on the cabinets, so we pulled the crown in the kitchen down, put the cabinets up, painted new crown to match and put it up. The crown is stacked and about 6" high, so it would be similar to the one above wrapping all the way around -- not smaller over the window. The main cabinets are white, but we have a contrasting wall with a blue finish. I was a little unsure of how it would look there, but I think it looks really good both matching and contrasting.

I have different crown molding profiles & sizes throughout my house. Any rooms that have continuous walls have the same crown molding. We have a 2 story foyer & living room w/ a large crown molding. My DR has a different size & profile. The kitchen & family room have a third size & profile. First floor master bedroom has a fourth as it has a tray (ed) ceiling. 6" could be a bit big for 8ft ceilings. I think it would depend on the profile.
