Hood Crown Molding- Does it HAVE to match the cabinets?

Hi again,

I've appreciated your help so far, and I have one (hopefully) last question! Our cabinets on the perimeter will be antique white (creamy white). The hood is the only cabinet that goes to the ceiling. We are installing crown around the entire kitchen area and I thought the crown would be a brighter white. Does the crown molding have to match the cabinet color? Or, should it be a brighter white and the piece of crown that connects the top of the hood to the ceiling will be brighter than the cabinets? The KD and I are having a disagreement on this one, but I won't tell who is on each side :)

IMO, the cabinetry crown should be the same shade of white as the cabinets. On another thought, does the wall crown molding profile and size match the cabinetry molding profile and size? If not, I can see two options: 1. Stop the wall moulding short of the cabinet and allow for a few inches of wall space before the cabinetry crown hits in the wall (which means the two shades of white won't touch) or 2. Have a bear of a time trying to scribe the cabinetry molding to fit over the wall crown molding. If by chance they are the same profile and size I'd still match the molding to the cabinetry.

I ask about the profiles because it is the issue that caused my hood to drop low enough for the cabinetry crown to hit the wall below my wall crown.

Is it worth doing a brighter white for the cabinets so that I can have my brighter white crown? Does anyone do cream crown? What does it look like?

Funny how one thing leads to another... I definitely vote for painting the cabinet crown to match the cabinetry. You might get lucky and find the rest of the trim works just fine with your new cabinets. Otherwise, you are going to have a lot of trim paint to deal with, it sounds like... Unless, of course, you really like the existing trim color and want to paint your cabinets the same color - which would remove the dilemma altogether. I just painted a mantle SW Dover White. I find it a tad cool for a white, but it is supposedly noteworthy for having a touch of cool and a touch of warm in the mix, making it a neutral white that plays well with the spectrum of colors. Loving your moulding, Tim. I would love to have the cabinetry crown flow right into the wall crown like it appears yours does. Can I ask how tall that crown is from cabinet to ceiling?

If you don't match the profiles of the moldings, you will be left with a plinth block separating the two different profiles. Some people find that less than desirable. Some people are OK with it. Here are two molding transitions that you do NOT want. The "woops, what now". The "we don't know what a plinth block is". I personally find that the best solution is to have the same top profile for the crown, and just change colors between walls and cabinets. Even if you have stacked molding on the cabinets, it works, because the profiles are the same. That's what we did here. We used a stacked crown for the cabinets, but the same top profile for cabinets and crown, just changing color where appropriate.

I admit, I'm a little confused as to whether or not you're painting or staining. Staining, I think...? I'd think that now isn't the time to cheap out. "Oh, said the guest/picky MIL, "That would be so beautiful if only that orangey trim actually matched the cabinets." or "How trendy of you." "OH," asked the mean neighbor, "Why you spent all that money on trim and your builder didn't even match your cabinets. Well, certainly is a good thing you like that 'eclectic' look. Honey."

You've got several problems. If you buy more of the same crown from your cabinet company, you'll still have to deal with the gap above the corner cabinet. If you raise the existing crown to the ceiling, it's very unlikely you'd find unpainted crown that matches it's size and profile, plus you'd then have to deal with a gap between the cabinets and the bottom of the crown. Here's what I would do. Choose the new crown mold you want for the rest of the room and measure it's height (how far down from the ceiling it comes). Make a mark on the wall at that height, then use a level to transfer that height to the stained crown and mark it. Then, trace the old, existing crown's profile onto the wall with a pencil. Now you have a mark where the bottom of the new crown will intersect the old crown, and another mark where the old crown will have to be narrowed to fit underneath the new. Carefully remove the stained crown from the corner cabinet. Next, build a frame above the corner cabinet that's the same height as the new crown, and that extends beyond the cabinet to the point at which the new crown will intersect the old. Now, install the new, painted crown around the kitchen and across the new soffit. Last, run the old crown through a table saw and cut it down so that it fits underneath the new crown. With me? This is a tough one to visualize.

Either cream or white, but do them the same. Otherwise, I believe it will look like a mistake, since they are so close in color. I am sure many people have off-white crown, or really any color of crown. I just personally think it gets tricky when you have something so close to white and then where do you stop it? If you are open to the living area, is the trim cream there, too?

If the crown goes all around the room, hood crown can be part of wall crown. If there's no ceiling crown, it should match the cabinet trim.

Really, the whole issue should be avoided. Go with one color, or very different colors.
