Working with KD's - Who's the Boss? And cabinet finish quality...

We're in the design phase of a kitchen remodel. We've visited several KD stores, with in-house KD's, that sell higher-end factory-made custom kitchen cabinetry. All those KD's seem to want to design the kitchen THEY think we should have, largely ignoring our wants, and push a particular line of cabinetry. We've also visited a small local cabinet shop that has a great reputation for doing higher-end work and has an in-house KD who listens to what we want when she designs our kitchen.

Our question is the quality of the finish of the cabinetry. We've read and heard that the finishes on the factory-made custom cabinets is superior, mainly due to the fact that they oven-cure the finishes. To our knowledge, based on a personal tour of the shop, the smaller shop has no curing ovens or process.

So you may surmise our question: How "superior" is a finish from a larger, higher-end cabinet factory with an oven-curing process to the finish on cabinets from a smaller, higher-end cabinet shop without an oven-curing process? The prices are about the same, so our dilemma is dealing with a somewhat contrary KD to get a higher quality finish or dealing with an amenable KD and getting a lower quality finish.

I guess our bottom-line question is "Are the finishes on the factory-made higher-end custom cabinets that much better than the finishes on cabinets made by a smaller higher-end local shop?"

Any advice will be appreciated - Thanks!
