Annkh, your advise was perfection!!! My kitchen was revised and we were able to keep our full size fridge by pulling out the cabs like you suggested. We also decreased the length of our island by 6" and moved it to the left to help with aisle space. We also went with a smaller hood (30") that allowed us to have more upper cabinetry and changed the drawer widths below. Yay!!! I think this may be it. Now, for more decisions: sink, faucets, appliances, granite, backsplash!!! Lol.

For me, I'd move the DW to the right side of the sink.
My work space is between the fridge/sink/cooktop, so if the DW is open, it's in the way of my work space.

I use my hood all the time (42" over 36" induction cooktop). I love how it's 3" bigger on each side than the cooktop because it sucks in steam/oil better w/ the overhang.
Seems like you have plenty of cabinets so I would get a 36" over your 30" cooktop.

W/ no windows in the kitchen, all those cabinets are feeling claustrophobic, so a 36" hood would give the space a pause/breathing room.

I agree with both of Amanda's points. Our cabinet guy warned us strongly about damage that steam causes to adjacent uppers when the hood isn't larger than the stove.

I'd also suggest that, in addition to moving the DW to the sink's right, the sink should be centered on the island. It'd be that much more offset from the stove, so someone at the stove and someone at the sink won't be back-to-back and bumping each other, and I think the sink placement would simply look better -- more deliberate -- centered on or lined up with something.

Random thoughts: One of the cons that you mentioned for plan #2 was walking across the entry with hot pots etc. Also though, if you use plan #2 and are prepping to the left of the sink, you are walking across the entire kitchen from the prep area to the stove and back again and then from the stove to the sink or DW and back again. I see a lot of walking between the two sides and across the entry way with this plan. I do prefer plan #1 because it is more compact and efficient. Your natural light at your prep area from the view/LR is better w/o the fridge blocking that and you can sneak peeks to your water view. If, in plan 2, because of the walking back and forth you find yourself prepping by the stove you may feel like you are in a dark cave, stuck in the corner. Your floorplan 1 is a little blurry so I can't tell but in the prep corner is that "3" filler in each corner? Just be careful that you have enough room to open the drawers on each corner so that they don't scrape the handles of the other drawers. Does that make sense? Be cautious of the pantry corner as well - filler may be necessary so that the pantry doors can be opened fully (especially if you have roll out shelves) and so that the 24" bank of drawers can be opened without scrapping the pantry doors in any way.

Thanks for responding. Desk--I think if I switch the drawer stack to the left side it will look less "wonky". I think that combo drawer/door on the right doesn't look very good. I have it all counter height--I don't personally care for the look of the lowered desk area in a kitchen. I do agree on the glass doors. What about a 30" open shelf like this picture below, flanked by standard 42" doors. corner upper: I've looked at lots of angled versus easy reach, and I think I like the easy reach better. It opens up the corner more. Glass doors: I would still really like to do a few glass doors. If I get rid of the angled glass door, where could I do a couple of glass doors that would look nice? I'm not sure where the best placement would be. corner by range: I don't think I will miss that space either. I can do one more drawer stack, other than the one to the left of the stove, so I was thinking of putting a 30" stack to the right of the stove. I can only do one more--so it's either 30" by the stove or 24" on the end of the peninsula. Thoughts? Fridge: It is only 12" right now. Would it look okay to pull the top cabinets out to 24" without doing a fridge panel? I am not against a fridge panel but the cost to add is $400 I think, so I am not sure if we can afford to add it. The wall is only 28" out, so the fridge doors should be able to open fully on both sides. Microwave: we do have a vent to the outside, so a range hood would work. When you say, in the corner, do you mean on the counter top? We do have counter top space, but wouldn't having the microwave on the counter be more of a "no no" than above the range? We do use our microwave daily, so I don't want to stick it in a pantry or anything like that. I take it back on the outlet in the cabinet by the fridge--it is in the future cabinet on the far left above the desk. I was planning to charge iPads and such out of sight in that cabinet. I kind of feel like since I can't afford a really pretty range hood, then I might as well just leave the microwave OTR since its never bothered me before, and use our limited funds for other pretty things I will enjoy/use every day, such as a few glass cabinets and drawers.

Some of this is personal taste and some is guidelines. I tend to do technical comments - any humor is incidental! Guidlines - I would allow 42" between sink and island and ref and island. If you get another size fridge, have kids, try to get past an open ref door or cabinet door, 3 feet is pretty small. On the other hand, you could allow a bit less room between cooktop and island. You must have fillers on both sides of the corner to avoid having doors and knobs get hung up on each other. Mixed in a bit with personal taste - be really sure you want the tall, deep cabinet beside the ref. I would like a tall, narrow cabinet in that position, but not a deep one. Why? You can't open a left or right swing door on that cabinet all the way because it will run into the counter or the ref. The last one to two feet of counter on the cooktop wall becomes unusable to a righty because a righty elbow will hit the cabinet door when closed. The counter will be blocked when that cabinet door is open. A narrow depth cabinet doesn't elimate all of those issues - it increases the usable counter. I like drawer base cabinets and I could get another foot of them if that cabinet wasn't quite as deep. Full depth also means you'll mostly be taking things from the appl garage with your left hand because it will be awkward to use your right. You could be a lefty and then it would work fine for you. The personal taste part is breaking up the depths a bit so there isn't a monolithic wall for very little storage space cost. I would also consider trading the refs - the big one by the clean up sink with the wine, and a ref drawer unit over by the cooktop or reversing the ref and the wine storage. If I'm getting a microwave meal from the ref and need to put in on a plate - I'm crossing through the cooks area to get a plate. Move the micro towards the ref - even if the ref moves. A micro is a shared use item and often the first cooking appliance a child is permitted to operate. Where you've placed it - it becomes exclusively the chefs or kids and spouse invade the chefs territory. And it would be problematic to open both the micro and the oven. I don't know how often that would happen, but I don't want to replace any appliance doors. If the ref stays where it is, move the prep sink out of the corner. With an sxs, the best landing area is behind you as you stand facing the open doors. You'd be dumping stuff into the sink or backing out (cause the aisle is so small) and placing stuff on the other side of the sink. I also like to have over-sprays on the counter instead of the floor. I would probably put the oven beside the cooktop, not under it. The oven would be a little higher and I see the contents without having to back up and bend over.

With a chimney hood, you need to allow about 3" of space on each side. I can't read what yours is, but that looks like a 1 and a fraction.

Thank you all for more valuable advise. Now, I feel conflicted again! LOL

I would've loved the DW to right, as we are right handed and feels easier to go from sink to DW (current set up now), however, there was no way that we made it work with the previous dimensions. When we shrunk the island and changed the cabinetry size, I never revisited that issue. Total oversight on my part!

The hood is the GE Profile 30" over a 30" cooktop. The wall on the left is all windows.

I kinda liked that the sink was not centered. That was another point that I researched and saw plenty of pictures. I liked the functionality of a longer slab at one side, than it being broken in half by a centered sink. Do you think this was a mistake.

I'm meeting with KD today to sign off of final design. Now, I'm second guessing...again!

Well, if you're going to put the dishwasher on the right of the sink, then the sink will be offset in the opposite direction. That addresses one of my issues -- wanting the sink farther offset from the stove so that someone at the sink and someone at the stove won't bump each other.

What you're suggesting -- having the sink off-center on the island -- puts the sink even farther from the stove than centering it would. So I do like that aspect of your plan. And you seem to have researched off-center sinks and like how it looks, so by all means, do what you like. There is no functional reason why you shouldn't.

However, just to make sure you like it -- your sink is going to be exactly six inches off center of that island. I'd mock up those exact dimensions (on a table or something) and see if you like it. In the pictures you found of off-center sinks, did you find any where the sink was only slightly off-center like that, or were all of them pictures where the sink was extremely off-center? In general, designers don't tend to do very slightly un-aligned or asymmetrical things because they look like a mistake rather than like deliberate design choice.

But as I said, if you either have seen a picture of a slightly off-set sink or mocked it up for yourself, and you are positive you like that, then there is no functional reason why it won't work in that kitchen, so you should absolutely please yourself.

I did some tweaking of your design to show you other options - e.g., moving the DW. It turns out the sink is almost centered on the island when you put enough prep workspace on the side opposite the DW - so if you don't like that, then consider eliminating the seat on the end and moving everything over. That would also give you even more prep space - although I think you have enough now (approx 45").

Regarding the pantry, I presented 4 options - they each have pluses and minuses (I think I like Option #1 using Zelmar's pantry the best).

I switched the pantry and the refrigerator b/c the island was a "barrier island' b/w the Prep Zone on the island and the Refrigerator. By moving the refrigerator, the island is no longer a "barrier" to the refrigerator. Ideally, the island would not be a barrier to either the refrigerator or the pantry, but if has to be one, generally it's better to have the refrigerator in the more accessible location (i.e, not "barriered")

In addition, you now have separate floor space for the Prep Zone, Cooking Zone, and Cleanup Zone and someone working at the cooktop won't run the risk of backing in to an open DW door (and stumbling) while holding a pot of boiling water (or other hot pot/pan).

On the cooktop wall, I tried to make it symmetrical since it appears that's what you want (or at least your KD wants!)

Note the 12" cabinet b/w the 24" Easy Reach and the 48" cabinet on the cooktop run. I think a 36"x24" Easy Reach would probably be better, but if you cannot get it or prefer the 12" cabinet, I suggest using a pullout cabinet instead of a standard cabinet. Some options for the cabinets flanking the cooktop:
* Two 24" cabinets on left + hood + two 24" cabinets on right (both with12" doors) + 12" cabinet + 24" easy Reach with 12" cabinet door
* 18" cabinet + 30" + hood + 30" + 30" (18+12) + 24" Easy Reach w/12" door
* 12" cabinet + 36" + hood + 36" + 24" + 24" Easy Reach w/12" door

So, about those Pantry Options (see picture below)...
- Option 1 (in the main layout). Either the 30" standard pullout your KD is probably planning from the looks of it or a cabinet w/drawers on the bottom and shelves above. Zelmar has such a pantry (so do at least two other GWer, but I can't remember which ones right now!) Unfortunately, Zelmar's pictures are no longer available, but I had saved one for future inspiration - I've posted it at the end. [Zelmar, if you're reading this - I hope it's OK with you! Let me...
