Ever see an all-chrome '50s range?

Check this out on eBay. Found it by accident but had to share. Like cooking on a mirror.

For all the whining about fingerprints, I think it's amazing this chrome stove is still so shiny, except for the griddle, 60 years later.

I haven't found old gas stoves to be inherently more valuable than electric ones. In particular, higher-end electric stoves from the late 1940s through '60s are valuable, especially if the back panel is full of chrome knobs and dials that make it look like a 1950s car dashboard. This one though is very basic so I don't think it would bring as much. You can usually find the manufacturer and model on a placard somewhere inside the door, somewhere in the oven interior, on the back, or occasionally underneath on the bottom. Much easier to sell old collectables when you can supply this information, so the one guy 200 miles away who's been Googling those terms and numbers for the last year will find yours. There are also several websites that cater to people looking to buy/restore/sell old appliances. And yes, Robertshaw (isn't it one word?) makes the thermostatic parts and sometimes the burners.

My BD is Friday, so I'm more aware than usual of how long I've been around... In the half century (plus) that I've observed trends, chrome has risen and fallen in popularity but has remained a constant - much like white porcelain bath fixtures and appliances. While chrome might not always be at the height of fashion, it's a classic. I chose chrome for the 3 bathrooms in my new home, and also went with a chrome faucet set for my kitchen even though I have satin nickel bin pulls, knobs and light fixtures there. I think chrome adds a clean looking sparkle, and is easy to maintain and match. It's also one of the more economical choices to go with for a finish - a major consideration at the time when we were outfitting an entire home. Just make sure it's real chrome. I had "chrome-looking" light fixtures and towel bars that the builder installed in my previous home that were not. They etched, pitted and the finished flaked in no time.

Need help with awkward layout and opening kitchen in late 50s ranch

You guys are awesome! I tried to incorporate everyone suggestions (because they were all great!) and this is what I've come up with. Since I'm not sure which of the kitchen walls are load bearing, both designs incorporate the possible need for a beam to extend down, which is fine. LAYOUT A: large pass-through looking into the living room and the doorway to the kitchen has been expanded. Basement stairs and corner coat closet have also been removed and the doorway into the addition has been widened. Hoping the outer facing cabinets around the beam can act as a place to put keys and bags, otherwise, we have no entryway. Concern: I'm a messy cook and with that being said, I'm questioning whether the stove should be below the pass-through because I'm envisioning grease splattering and sauce flying into my living room. LAYOUT B: The same as layout A but with a smaller pass-through that begins after the stove. My concern for this is despite the pass-through being just shy of 5ft wide, based on this mock-up, it doesn't look like it does much to open the room. Would this be a waste of money to even bother with? Here's a loose floorplan of both A and B. What are your thoughts? The fridge jams me up a bit because it seemed too bulky near the kitchen entrance and moving it towards the addition opening made it too crammed again.

Hot damn. That thing is like the John Hancock tower. Hiding in plain sight. My tastes run to the copper range, but I'd not kick either one out of the kitchen.

We have a lot of chrome in our kitchen and house, but that would be one spot that it would be a real pain to keep nice. I love the look of it, but would never own one.
This is like white carpet in that it is a wonderful look but not practical whatsoever.

I don't see why it's not practical. It's 60 years old, and obviously hasn't been restored, and it looks great. Chrome, especially old chrome, is really easy to take care of (says the fool who put polished nickel in his bathroom).

Windex and two minutes tops.

I am in the mood for a copper Chambers cooktop.

My city has a house tour and about 10 years ago one of the houses had a Chambers cooktop and ovens, and I KNEW the next time it was on the tour it would all be gone.
The house is now a 150 old cottagey house with superelaborate kitchen and "spa bath" attached. You walk into this bath from your great Aunt's bedroom and expect to see a naked Bond Girl to be waiting in the giant shower. I sighed the entire time I was in the house.

Marcolo's post sent me to ebay last night. My kitchen is going to be heavy on copper, and I didn't even know about Chambers copper until I spied it on ebay last night.

Oh, would that they weren't 38" wide .... sigh.

Beautiful! Never heard of the maker ("Anderson"), but maybe that's because it was an East Coast stovemaker.

It may clean easily enough, but it is the often that would be a deal breaker for me. Our kids touch every surface for no discernible reason. There would need to be one person, on duty until bedtime, to keep it looking good in our house. If there was a house with only adults, then it would be an option. Even if I were an empty nester, then I'd have to go through it again when the grandkids started to arrive.
This is not a practical kitchen item. The surface areas are too large to hide smudges, water spots and fingerprints. It is a 2 seater convertible of an appliance. If you can have one of those, then you can have the other ;)

Hmm. I can say with 100% confidence that I never touched my mother's stove as a child. I can guarantee that, because I just looked down at my fingers, and I have 10.

Well this post will be a little outdated. But I owned the copper stove when this picture was taken...It was in my B&B.
